D.E.M.O.N.S: Getting Summoned Weekly isn't so Bad

Chapter 2149 Heating Up

Chapter 2149: Chapter 2149 Heating Up

Kat —

Once they got a bit further away from the entrance and the poison, Kat stopped to ask, “So where do you think we should go? There are a bunch of pathways all over the place, but when Lily and I were exploring the other day we were more concerned with catching your group so we didn’t really explore. The greenhouse is over that way,” Kat gestured through the wall. “And of course there’s the caves up ahead. Where are we best heading?”

“Well,” Furen began slowly. “From what I know the core should be towards the middle or back of the facility. Not at any of these more fringe areas. The greenhouse for example, I think ran on its own system completely separate to everything else. I’m just not sure if there’s multiple floors to this place. I didn’t see any more obvious stares but those tunnels were there… but we also didn’t see broken rooms and whatnot,”

Kat nodded slowly. “So… your best guess?”

“I wish to travel the length of this main corridor until we find a dead end or the core,” admitted Furen.

Kat nodded, “Alright but how are you going to get pass the broken room with the caves? The exit to that room is mostly blocked and while Lily and I can sneak through the small gaps you definitely can’t,”

Furen gave Kat and odd looking, focusing on her horns for a few moments before looking over the rest of her body. “You’re taller than me by a good deal… how exactly can you fit through something I cannot?”

“Did… did you not notice that I can do this?” asked Kat as she swapped into water for a brief moment before swapping back. “I was sure I used it to navigate the tunnels when you were all around…”

“I was a bit dazed at the time and wasn’t really paying attention to you specifically. I was more concerned with Lily and the rest of my crew. I wasn’t sure what they’d do… and I was worried a fight would break out. Plus, Lily seemed like a bigger tactical worry considering she was carrying Tanisha at the time. I didn’t really want to fight you… but before the big monster… pit… thing… I would’ve attacked you if everyone else did and getting Tanisha free would have been my first move,” admitted Furen.

“Ah… not sure what to say to that but sure,” Kat said with some confusion. Still… it was… something so instead of worrying too much about that information Kat got back to walking along the corridor. Nothing seemed to have changed before yesterday, which was to be expected.

There was a slight worry when they got to the collapsed room though, so they were a lot more careful when entering. Furen obviously had her trauma from being mauled nearly to death and Kat was worried they’d left too much of it being resulting in the smaller versions of the monster sticking around. Kat entered the room first, senses primed to the maximum, but ensuring that she was loud and obvious about her moves.

Kat slammed into the floor with her full weight, wings closed to ensure that the no sound was muffled from her drop. The sound of her feet crushing a few of the weaker pebbles beneath them echoed through the room for a few moments before Kat continued moving, playing her best ’unworried adventurer’ she could manage as she strode across the room. Lily was hanging a little, allowing for Furen to hop down next.

Lily glided over to be close to Furen’s shoulder. From here she could continue to keep an eye on the gem in the necklace, and be ready if anything attacked. The fact that she was almost gliding meant her wings only occasionally needed to move and weren’t making much sound when they did so. Lily went the extra mile to ensure that each wingbeat she did need to utilise was timed to match with one of Furen’s footfalls disguising things further.

All of this to prepare for an ambush… that didn’t arrive. They managed to make it across the entire room and to the exit without anything moving anywhere else. There was no ambush, no sounds that might indicate one, not even the sound of anything else scurrying around. Kat wasn’t convinced that meant the monster was entirely gone from the place… perhaps it just knew better then to mess with them anymore. Regardless, it seemed safe for now.

“So… looking at this, I can try and move aside enough rocks, with Lily’s help, to open up a gap for you… probably need to chip away at the ceiling a bit but it can be done. The other thing we could try…” Do you think you could teleport someone else with your spell? Kat paused to ask.

[Um… theoretically yes, practically I probably shouldn’t? I haven’t even used it in human form yet so taking a human sized target along with me… or maybe in place of me? Not the best idea. Still… you can make the offer.]

So Kat did, “… is that we have Lily teleport you through with a spell of hers. Though do note that it hasn’t been tested on other people, or even Lily at full size.”

“Let’s just move the rocks. The risk of a cave in is high, but not as high as the chance of death should a teleportation spell go wrong. Especially with you two here, as that makes a cave in MUCH more survivable,” suggested Furen.

[Well she’s not WRONG exactly…] Kat found she agreed with Lily, both in words and in tone. She wasn’t wrong that moving the rocks would be easier… it was just going to be a pain. Still, Kat got to work. Lily was responsible for drilling through the bits of the ceiling that needed to go, and Kat moved them away. Mostly be tossing them off to the side.

Part of her wanted to be petty and throw them towards Furen but she wasn’t really all that mad. Her decision made sense, the risks really weren’t worth it. Still it meant that they hd to work for a bit. The ceiling was thicker then you’d think and was solidly made. Probably why it handle the fall so well. Even Lily couldn’t simply break through all the way. Instead they had to work it away in layers.

Eventually, the hole was large enough for Furen to fit through and they moved through the gap. Kat first of course, just in case. It was good that she did, because soon after entering the area, the sound of clicking spread through the hall and the area turned dark red. Kat glanced around, worriedly for a few moments when a golem spider dropped down from the ceiling.

Kat slammed a fist through the centre of it… causing the entire thing to explode. Not just that, but there was apparently fuel of some kind inside of it, or perhaps just a flammable liquid. Kat was coated in the stuff when she punched through the golem and the liquid was soon trying to burn her alive. It wasn’t all that hot, and clearly designed for more standard adventurers… but this was a real problem.

Especially because more spiders were dropping down from the ceiling even as Kat stood there. Kat slammed through a few more, sending the liquid all over the room but eventually the golems stopped dropping down on her. The problem came from the fact that the floor was now burning and the liquid seemed to be clinging to her clothes. Luckily her skin didn’t trap the liquid and allowed it to run off just by moving around…

But the stuff clinging to her clothes was really sticking there. Thick globs of it burning away at her kimono. Kat wanted to simply dismiss and resummon the clothes… but that would be more liquid on the already burning floor and there didn’t seem to be a safe spot to leave it if she wanted the other two to be able to make it through the gap in the stone. In fact… some of the liquid seemed to be making its way down towards the gap already. It has hard to tell with all the fire, and it wasn’t fast… but that did make things awkward.

How hot is this for you Lily? I can’t really tell.

[Not too bad. I’m not really that close to it and I can barely feel the heat. I imagine it’d be hot and annoying but probably not to the point it does real damage to me.]

And for Furen?*

[Too hot probably.]

*Dammit. Alright can your shadows move this?*

[Eh… maybe? If it’s magical fire at all the answer is going to be pretty firmly ’no’. It’d burn away at my shadows and… let me just test it.] Lily moved a shadowy hand towards the liquid and found the heat wasn’t effecting it… at least until she got to the fire itself. At that point it started to burn her shadows actively, forcing her to concentrate on it and pay extra mana. [Yeah this is going to be a pain…]
