Chapter 1905 A Mol-ment of Your Time
Chapter 1905: Chapter 1905 A Mol-ment of Your Time
— Kat —
As the three approached the manor Mol was nowhere in sight. The front wasn’t being worked on at the moment, and while progress had been made not that much. Luckily for Kat’s desire to tease the beastkin, she was in hearing range. Kat could hear the rhythmic sound of metal on stone as someone, presumably Mol, chipped their way through a stone block. The fact it was coming from behind the manor was excellent as that’s where they needed to drop of the plants.
Walking around the back revealed a big flat area filled with various stone pillars. Their purpose was obvious, especially when Kat could see that a few of them at the far edge of the area was a few partially completed sculptures. A generous name for what seemed more like a durability test of the stone for all but one of them.
“Hey Mol!” shouted Kat.
“GAH!” screamed Mol as she jumped backwards a touch. Sadly, the place she was standing on a small bit of scaffolding next to the stone pillar she was working on. Mol wheeled her arms as she panicked, having landed right on the railing. Kat was wondering if she would recover or not when Lily’s shadow shot out and caught the other girl, slowly pushing her back onto the scaffold.
*Oh… yeah probably should’ve gotten ready to catch her…* “Kat?! What are you doing here?” asked Mol.
Kat raised a concerned eyebrow. “Mol… you do know I have a meeting here right?”
“Yes but like… what are you doing back here?” asked Mol. *I’m a little surprised she just came out and said it.*
“Delivering these plants,” said Kat as she hefted the pot slightly. “We were told to just leave them near the back door… but seeing as you’re here…”
Mol sighed, “Urgh, fine whatever… just… leave them over by the door like you were asked,”
Kat grinned and did as she was told. “So, do you know when exactly the meeting is meant to be? Sure it was scheduled for ’in twenty-four hours’ but frankly I don’t know what time it was yesterday, nor do I know what time it is now,”
Mol sighed, “The meeting should be soon. Sometime in the next half an hour. It’s not like I have a watch on me either,”
“So what have you been up to?” asked Kat.
Mol gave Kat a deadpan look and then slowly moved her gaze to Hedera and raised an eyebrow, but Hedera just grinned back at her, glad that she wasn’t the only one that felt uncomfortable around the demon. Sure Kat was nice but that didn’t change how she felt. For Hedera this was surprisingly cathartic.
“I’ve been fine,” said Mold dryly before pausing for a moment. “You know what. I’m just going to say it. You do realise that I moved to the back here to avoid you right?”
“I wouldn’t have thought so, but I did have an inkling,” admitted Kat. “Thanks for confirming it I guess? Why though?”
“I just have no idea how to deal with you,” admitted Mol. “Like… on multiple levels. So I’d just rather… not,”
Kat shrugged. “I’m not going to push if you really think that way,”
Mol sighed and relaxed. “Look… your familiar was nice enough to save me when I nearly fell… so just know I mean this as nicely as possible… I’d just rather not deal with you right now. Maybe later but not right now,”
Kat shrugged, “Guess we’ll go wait out the front then,”
As the three walked around the side of the manor Hedera asked, “What did you do to the poor girl?”
“Honestly not that match. Lily can confirm it through my memories… but I was mostly just asking her questions and sort of tripped her up into admitting some ’out of character’ things. I wasn’t even trying for that at the start… and then her reactions were amusing so I sort of kept poking for a bit.
“Admittedly, today was mostly about continuing to poke her, rather then trying for more info… but I didn’t expect her to nearly fall off that scaffolding. I don’t really know how strong she is, but a fall like that could’ve hurt so… it didn’t really seem worth pushing,” explained Kat.
“Ah… I think she’s just barely Rank 1,” answered Hedera.
“Huh… I would’ve guessed strong…” mumbled Kat.
Hedera shrugged, “My aura reading isn’t an exact science and I certainly CAN be wrong… but I’d say in this case she’s definitely Rank 1 and almost certainly on the lower end. I have plenty of experience with that sort of power level and while you were still approaching it was easy to tell,”
“Oh yeah… so how does that work anyway? Like… how do powerful auras mess with other auras?” asked Kat. Hedera fidgeted a bit as she was walking. “Hey, if you don’t want to answer it’s all good, I’m just making conversation about it,”
Hedera sighed. “Eh… look I don’t know if it’s something I really love to talk about but the real issue isn’t that I want it to be a secret or whatever but that it’s hard to describe. It’s rare as I said, and while I personally SEE auras… sort of… that’s not the case for other people that have similar powers.
“Some people smell them, others can sort of taste the power in people. It’s rare, but I do know of one example of someone who could… ’feel’ auras with their sense of touch. It’s all rather individual. Also, even saying that I ’see’ them isn’t entirely true because while closing my eyes normally stops me from seeing auras, I CAN see them with my eyes clothes so it’s probably more of a mental thing then a any real restriction.
“Which… that is to say… it’s hard to describe things. Everyone tends to have their own aura, but it DOES get bigger as they gain in power,” Hedera paused to wave her hands around vaguely. “That being said… auras aren’t a fixed thing. They move and shift. With enough practice you can even manipulate them. Which is a little weird when most people can’t see or interact with them.
“Of course, that’s the intentional side of things. It’s much easier to manipulate them without thinking about it. When someone gets angry that tends to make their aura larger, sad shrink, some other motions do different things to it,” explained Hedera.
“Hmm… what does it look like when I do this?” asked Kat as she started to push her calming aura into active use. It wasn’t directed at anything, and she was excluding Hedera intentionally… curious to see what she would say.
“Hmm… it’s definitely doing something but not sure what you’re doing. It’s more… focused? I guess?” offered Hedera.
Kat pushed her aura to extend further out. “And now?”
“Nothing changed,” said Hedera with a smug look as if she’d caught Kat in something.
*Odd… so Hedera’s ’aura’ and my ’aura’ are not in fact the same thing. Not sure how I feel about that to be honest.*
[I mean… it’s probably a translation issue. Assuming they even had different names in Hedera’s original language. There’s nothing else to call it. In either instance really.]
*I mean… that does make sense but it’s still a bit odd. Normally when stuff like this happens we get that bit of extra context to ensure we know what was meant specifically.*
[Just proves that the translation spell, while good, isn’t perfect.]
“So… what was that all about then?” asked Hedera.
“Oh… well… I have something I call an ’aura’ that I use for calming people down but apparently it’s not related to the aura you can see… or not much anyway,” admitted Kat.
“Hmm…” mumbled Hedera. “Not sure how I feel about that,”
Kat shrugged, “Not sure how your meant to feel. Though, if you don’t mind me going back to the ’how it works’ train of thinking… I was wondering what happens to people with weaker auras when someone stronger is around?”
“Ah,” intoned Hedera with a nod. “That’s another complicated part. Not only does everyone’s aura react differently, but it’s the mixture that can be strange. Thyme’s for example tends to… sort of bleed into any other auras nearby almost making it seem like they’re larger then normal… or perhaps just… more prominent?
“Yours is similar, but more in that… it… well it has two different versions. With Lily your auras are constantly mixing together at the edges, but for other people your aura… it remains distinct but it tends to just flow around others. The issue is some other auras that get near yours get… not quite crushed but almost? Like they get pressed down by it even when you’re aura is just floating by.”
“Huh… do you think that’s an indication of our personalities?” asked Kat.
Hedera shrugged. “Maybe… but I’ve seen people with burning auras that might as well be fire… except they don’t have it as their magic affinity and the person I’m thinking of in particular didn’t have anger problems. So… yeah.”
