Chapter 1477 - 1477 Kat’s Short Cooking Montage
— Kat —
Lily was asleep, Kamiko was asleep, and Kat was nearly there herself. Three hours of intense conversation later and yet, even though the sun had dipped below the horizon they were still going. Apparently, Hunter 23HX443 got into ‘Hunting Mode’ and now she was absolutely grilling Stphn on every single detail he could possibly remember, perhaps multiple times. freёwebnoѵel.com
Kat really wasn’t paying any attention to the conversation at this point.
His wife Mry had left thirty minutes in and headed back for the bedroom. She was presumably also asleep but Kat wasn’t going to check that. No, instead she was here, awake but sort of half dozing just in case she was needed for something. Ok, it was more because Kat wanted to see if Hunter’s deadpan mask would crack at some point but at three hours in she was really starting to doubt it’d happen.
*Right. Might as well do something useful.* Kat carefully untangled herself from Kamiko’s grasp, summoning a pillow to take her place and gently put Lily down on top of Kamiko. Lily’s nose twitched at this for a few moments before seemingly accepting the situation and burying herself into Kamiko’s outfit. Kat quickly shifted the now loose kimono to properly cover Lily and Kamiko’s… assets.
No sense in giving everyone a show. A second later Kat decided to add a thin blanket just to be safe.
Dusting her hands off Kat made her way to the kitchen and started to carefully look in the cupboards. This quickly revealed that she had no idea what most of these ingredients were. The closest she got to ‘understanding’ was the meat shelf, which had to be enchanted.
Sure the meat itself wasn’t familiar at a glance but the look and feel of it gave her enough clues to what it would probably taste like.
After five minutes of this Kat just decided to cook with stuff in her ring. It’s not like she was going to run out because she splurged a bit. Kat knew she could cook dinner for the whole town, twice over and still have barely made a dent in her supplies. The rings were just that unbelievably overstocked. As Kat considered what to eat she also realised she’d have a problem in the near future.
*What the heck am I even meant to do with the stuff inside here? I mean… I was told that I could keep anything I wanted because it was all written off but I was specifically told we wouldn’t keep the rings… which happens to be where I’m storing all this shit right now. I do not have anywhere near enough space to keep anything but a miniscule faction of this stuff on hand.
So I suppose I should either send someone a message, probably Sue or Nira, and ask them what it would cost to buy one of these and hope I’ve got enough money. Would it be worth burning a favour token to keep them both? Because there’s also Lily’s ring. Probably a bit of a waste of a token… and I guess I don’t really need all this stuff… but I can’t help but want to keep as much of it as I can.
I wonder why? Bit of greed in me perhaps? Or is it just common sense. I have no idea what they’d do with anything that remained after all.*
Kat shook her head to clear her mind. There was no point in worrying… but she did send of a quick message to Sue explaining the situation. No sense in putting that part off. Sue already knew the gist of what they’d been up to anyway. Kat might not have sent regularly messages to the succubus like she had with Sylvie, but Sue did still get occasional updates.
Once that was settled Kat decided to have a bit of fun with dinner. Instead of cooking something more normal she was going to make use of some of the crazier cooking implements sitting in her storage ring. Hunter was always after more meat, and after the nonsense it took to get to the town Kat was willing to celebrate a bit.
It would still require watching, but Kat had found a rather interesting appliance.
Kat placed it on the bench. It looked more like a metal coffin then a cooking instrument. Still the instructions she’d found inside of it made the use case clear. Kat pulled out an entire pig and placed it inside and then started to make the combination marinade and glaze. How that was meant to work, Kat didn’t really know but she trusted demon technology enough to make the attempt.
Kat found herself dumping huge quantities of her chosen sauces into the coffin, followed by a healthy portion of vegetables, what seemed to Kat like an overabundance of spices and then filled the rest up with water. Kat then carefully shut the coffin and hit ‘cook’ before moving it off to the side.
There was nowhere good to store it so she had to bring out another table that blocked the doorway, but it was fine. Kat could move it if someone needed to get out.
Back in the kitchen, Kat then got started on the salad. She took a bit more of an inventive approach for this one. Picking out various fruits and vegetables that she didn’t actually recognise, slicing them neatly, and then trying them. The ones Kat found pleasant she put in on container, which was honestly most of them. Those Kat found acceptable were put in a third container, and those Kat hated?
Well she only found a single thing she hated amongst those she tested today.
It was… decidedly odd. It looked somewhat like a kiwi-fruit with a fuzzy outside except it was bright orange. After peeling off the skin Kat took a bite and found the fruit stuck to her teeth like it was particularly tough taffy. Kat also found she absolutely hated the taste. It was like someone had condensed salt water and bark into a single dish. That however, was not the worst part.

No the worst part was once Kat recognised the horrible taste she tried to spit it out and throw it away. She failed. The gunk remained stubbornly stuck to her teeth. Kat had to literally rip the fruit out of her mouth and even then plenty of it remained stuck on her teeth.
Kat seriously debated punching her teeth out to allow them to regrow without any gunk on them, but she decided to try a slightly gentler method instead.
Setting her mouth on fire.
This worked, luckily for Kat. The remains of the fruit froze in her mouth and was easily spat out. Once it was gone Kat pulled a jug of pear juice from her storage ring and downed the hole thing. It didn’t help all that much. Despite the great taste of pear juice, the taste of whatever that other fruit was lingered. Kat looked around for a bit and found some mouth wash.
Something she didn’t really use before or after becoming a demon. Still it was there right now.
So Kat took a swig and found that it BURNED. *Shit. What the hell is in this? It must be mighty powerful to still burn my mouth despite everything I’ve gone through. It’s not necessarily the worst feeling, but it is decidedly odd after I’ve been immune to temperature changes for so long. Which I guess this isn’t?*
Kat spat out the mouth was into a glass and returned it to her storage ring. No sense in risking the plumbing in the tree here, however that worked. Kat was pretty sure that if it could leave her mouth tingling it was not safe for consumption by animal or plant and she definitely didn’t want to test that theory on a giant tree that housed the town’s government. Very much not worth it.
A quick drink of normal water followed and then Kat got to work on the salads. Kat decided to go with three moderate sized bowls. The first was almost sickeningly sweet balanced out by a sprits of the not-lemon she’d found to try and ensure that whoever dove into that one wouldn’t rot their teeth. Probably Kamiko. Of course that might be because Kat had also added some jelly to the mix.
The next one was more of an earthy salad that Kat balanced with a tart dressing that really made the unique flavours of the ingredients pop but wasn’t anywhere near as extreme compared to ‘Kamiko’s’ salad.
The last one wasn’t actually a salad at all. Instead, Kat had done up some sushi rolls, primarily as an excuse to have fish out for Lily if she wanted it. Kat ‘coincidentally’ cut up way too much fish to put in the sushi rolls so it would just have to live on a separate plate. Totally coincidence Kat would assure you. If she could.
Kat glanced over at the others in the room and nothing had really changed. Though Kat did notice now that Hunter had a notepad floating beside her that seemed to be taking notes in her stead. It wasn’t a perfect copy of what Stphn was saying, but it did grab some of his words. Kamiko and Lily were still sleeping and Mry was absent. Time to check on the pork then.
