Demon Slayer: Breath of Desire
Chapter 250: The Weakness That Doesn’t Exist
Upon hearing the commotion, people drew closer in disbelief.
Especially Mitsuri, who had never witnessed anything like it.
Seeing Sanemi transformed into a demon and watching the sun burn him, she covered her mouth as tears streamed from her eyes.
Shinobu rushed over to comfort her: "It’s okay, Mitsuri. Look, Sanemi is returning to normal and his burns are healing."
The wounds on Sanemi’s body were shrinking steadily. The ducts that had previously carried blood across his skin turned back into his usual scars, while the sun damage regenerated.
"Thank goodness we made it in time," Marcus sighed in relief.
However, just as he was about to take Sanemi to the lab... tragedy struck again.
Although Sanemi’s gaze remained vacant, he moved with dazzling speed. Guided by pure instinct, he lunged at Tanjiro, who had just arrived.
The young man had no time to react when he felt a lightness at his waist: his katana was in Sanemi’s hands.
"Shinazugawa-san!"
Tanjiro shouted, but Sanemi seemed not to have heard him at all.
Deaf to all warnings, Sanemi raised his arm and cut.
Swish
In that instant, Tanjiro only felt that he was dying in a rather unjust way.
He didn’t even understand what was happening!
But hearing the gasps of astonishment, he touched his neck involuntarily.
Eh?
He was still fine!
When he opened his eyes, Marcus’s back stood tall right in front of him.
"Senpai!" he exclaimed, hurrying to check. He thought Marcus had blocked the cut, but he found no mark anywhere on his body.
"Why?"
Marcus’s voice rang out above him.
Tanjiro followed his gaze and opened his eyes wide.
Sanemi lay on the ground gripping the katana, and beside him... rested his own head!
He had taken his own life.
Even Marcus himself was stunned by the scene.
He replayed it in his mind.
Sanemi hadn’t attacked anyone when he turned into a demon; instead, he ran like a madman toward the sun and, after regaining his composure, snatched Tanjiro’s katana to behead himself.
In simple terms: he wanted to die.
But why?
If he’d wanted to see his mother, he’d already done so, and he had the power too...
Marcus couldn’t quite wrap his head around it.
But when he saw the granulation tissue sprouting from the cut on Sanemi’s neck, he narrowed his eyes.
Regenerating?
Marcus’s pupils turned golden.
Sanemi’s head lifted off the ground and landed back on his neck, reattaching in an instant.
The wound vanished without a trace.
Tanjiro was left slack-jawed, and the rest watched the scene the same way.
Especially Hakuji, whose expression reflected utter shock.
Had he overcome the weakness of decapitation the very instant he turned into a demon?
"Hahaha!! So that was it!!"
Marcus’s laughter cut through everyone’s thoughts.
Their eyes turned toward him, fearing he’d lost his mind, but Marcus was simply staring at the sky, laughing loudly.
"Turns out we vampires don’t have the weakness of being decapitated by a Nichirin!"
Silence took over the place.
Hakuji was the first to approach, his voice tense: "Sir, what do you mean?"
Marcus smiled and extended his hand.
The Nichirin blade on the ground flew into his hand, and he examined it in detail, filled with an emotion he couldn’t hide.
"Nichirin blades kill demons thanks to the Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Crimson Ore from the mountain most exposed to the sun; it’s the solar energy in the crimson sand and stone that does the work."
"In short, it’s a blade enchanted with sunlight, and its restraining power depends on that energy. And we don’t fear the sun! Therefore, to a vampire, it’s an ordinary sword. Cutting off our heads won’t kill us!"
Zenitsu felt a violent shiver run through him: "If you don’t fear the sun or decapitation... could it be that Muzan...?"
Marcus shook his head with a faint laugh: "It’s not that simple. The difference in magnitude between the sun and the sword is enormous."
"Magnitude?" Tanjiro asked.
"Yes!" Marcus gave Hakuji a pat on the shoulder. "Back in his day, Hakuji overcame decapitation, but the sun would have killed him. The solar energy in a Nichirin is tiny compared to direct sunlight. If the sword has one point of solar energy, the sun has a hundred."
With that, he gripped the katana’s hilt tightly, and the blade turned a brilliant red.
"The Bright Red Nichirin Sword activates the internal solar energy through vibration and force, raising those points to five or ten. That’s why it inflicts damage on any part of the body without relying on the neck alone."
"So by resisting decapitation... I only increased my resistance to the sun..." Hakuji murmured.
"That’s right." Marcus handed the sword back to Tanjiro. "Only now your resistance is maxed out."
"Incredible!" Mitsuri’s eyes were shining. "Doesn’t that mean vampires have no weaknesses?"
"No weaknesses?"
A furious voice rang out from the ground.
"Then... how am I supposed to kill myself?!"
Sanemi’s voice drew everyone’s attention.
Marcus lowered his gaze to Sanemi’s eyes, which were regaining their clarity: "Why do you insist on dying?"
Sanemi stared at the sky with vacant eyes.
"I don’t want to die. I just want to return to that state... I still have unfinished business."
The place fell into a heavy silence.
After a moment, Marcus sighed: "I let you go say goodbye, not to—"
"I couldn’t say goodbye! My mother can’t go to heaven!!!" Sanemi gritted his teeth, trembling. "And to top it off, that bastard father of mine is right beside her! That’s a double hell for her!!"
Marcus went completely silent...
Sanemi’s mother, after being turned into a demon, had killed her children without awareness and had to atone for her sins in hell.
His abusive father didn’t deserve heaven either.
The two of them shared hell.
Marcus finally understood Sanemi’s turmoil: the revelation about his mother and the sight of his father had fed an obsession with suicide stronger than the derangement of his own demonization.
"The payment for sins has a limit. Sooner or later your mother will reincarnate."
"How long?" Sanemi turned his face, fixing his eyes on him.
Marcus shook his head.
That was something he couldn’t know.
The light in Sanemi’s gaze went dark again.
Gritting his teeth, he stood without looking at anyone and walked out through the crowd, step by step, his face impassive.
Seeing him pass, Mitsuri couldn’t hold back: "Shinazugawa-san, where are you going?"
"To kill myself," he replied coldly before disappearing around the corner of the hallway.
Tanjiro couldn’t just stand by with his arms crossed and tried to follow him, but Marcus stopped him with a hand on his shoulder.
Tanjiro turned around, confused.
"Don’t worry," Marcus smiled. "Let him torment himself—he won’t die anyway."
"And it also helps us test whether vampires have any other weaknesses."
At that moment, no one foresaw what was to come.
That relentless executioner—feared by both human families and vampires of future generations, the second most powerful of his kind, surpassed only by the progenitor himself—would, from that instant on, take up the strange habit of seeking death wherever he went.
