Demon Slayer: Breath of Desire

Chapter 238: Terror Beneath the Moon

The ice sculpture rolled across the ground, and without the continuous injection of low temperatures, its surface began to crack.

Crack! Crackle!

The fissures spread like a spiderweb until the entire structure exploded from within.

Boom!

Shinobu and Kanao were finally free!

And with that, their height and strength grew.

A pair of butterfly antennae sprouted from Shinobu’s forehead, catching every detail of her surroundings. Kanao followed close behind; her eyes became compound, gem-like, reflecting every glint of light.

Swish

The next second, both of them vanished.

Shinobu appeared above Douma.

And before he could sense the threat, a katana pierced through the crown of his head and buried itself in his chest.

Kanao appeared in front of him at the same moment, swinging a horizontal slash toward his neck.

Dodging was impossible: Shinobu’s blade had him pinned in place.

Douma raised his fans to block the fatal strike, but his movements were clumsy and slow against Kanao’s new perception.

The katana slipped past the fans with ease and sank into his neck.

Crack!!

It cut through the flesh without a sound, but the bone stopped it.

Just as Kanao screamed and kept pouring in more strength to behead him, Shinobu’s antennae twitched.

Without a word, she pulled out her katana and retreated, taking Kanao with her.

Fwoosh

The next second, an enormous surge of cold air burst forth.

The four mini-Doumas lined up and unleashed a maximum dose of freezing mist toward their main body, no matter what.

Had they not fled, they couldn’t say for certain whether they’d be able to cut off Douma’s head... but they would undoubtedly have been frozen all over again.

Douma pulled Kanao’s katana out and looked at them with his head tilted.

"Ara... this really is a nuisance..."

He closed his fans.

Kokushibo regarded the three demons in their maximum state, along with Shinobu and Kanao after their transformation.

He glanced at Zenitsu, whom Ivy had dragged over with her threads and who was still trembling with fear; at Yushiro, impaled by the ice but smiling; and at Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Tamayo, standing firm at the front to protect them.

His six eyes narrowed.

...This had become a real dilemma.

...

Swordsmith Village!

Four figures were locked in a frantic chase: Mitsuri and Sanemi in the lead, Muzan behind them, and Obanai hot on his heels.

Despite the pursuit, escape wasn’t impossible.

Compared to his destructive power and his regeneration, Muzan’s only weakness was his movement speed.

After thousands of years with no need to flee — except for that one time he ended up in 1,800 pieces — he had never developed any skill for escaping or high-speed tracking.

This kept him from catching up to Sanemi and Mitsuri, who were running with everything they had.

And that was why Muzan began to grow anxious.

He had sold out Hantengu just to land a blow on Marcus... but if he couldn’t even catch them, he’d be the one to pay the price!

Looking at the whips around him, he gritted his teeth and drove them into the ground.

The whips advanced in a crisscross like the legs of a giant spider, picking up the pace frantically.

Eighteen legs ran far faster than two.

Seeing the distance closing rapidly, he could already picture Mitsuri’s panic-stricken face.

He couldn’t help fantasizing about the image of Marcus cradling a dismembered Mitsuri and weeping inconsolably.

"Sanemi-san, he... he’s catching up to us!" Mitsuri’s voice trembled.

Sanemi glanced back and gritted his teeth. "He’s too fast, we can’t run anymore. Get ready to fight!"

"Right!"

At the rear, Tokito, resting on Obanai’s back, murmured with regret. "Muzan sped up."

Obanai was panting heavily. "Can I... can I still catch him?"

"I’m afraid we won’t reach him in time to land that cut."

"Impossible!"

Roaring, Obanai quickened his pace. Feeling Obanai’s body temperature spike abruptly, Tokito was stunned.

"Did you really think you could escape?"

Muzan’s handling of the whips grew more natural, and his speed just kept climbing.

Mitsuri’s terrified face was already within his reach.

He was thrilled!

It had been so long since he’d experienced this kind of hunt or the delight of payback, and it drew the corners of his mouth upward.

And yet, there was someone even faster.

If the Hashira’s speed was that of a bicycle and Muzan’s that of a train, then the fluorescent blue glow tearing down from the mountain was a race car at full throttle.

That figure ignored trees and houses, moving in a straight line: trunks snapped and roof tiles flew in its wake.

At such a thunderous racket, Muzan turned his head toward the sound.

Beneath the moonlight, a silhouette wrapped in blue radiance emerged from the darkness.

Its mouth hung open, tongue lolling out, saliva flung by the wind, and a hungry light in its eyes, like a beast lunging at its prey.

Its target was none other than...

Muzan himself.

Muzan’s pupils contracted all at once.

Marcus!

And Hantengu?!

Before he could grasp what was happening, another figure appeared in his peripheral vision: dark red hair streaming in the wind, a blood-red haori billowing, Hanafuda earrings, and the red mark on his forehead...

At the sight of that nightmarish face, his breath stopped.

YORIICHI TSUGIKUNI!!

Muzan’s five brains all began to scream at once; one said "impossible," another "he’s already dead," and the rest simply let out terrified shrieks.

His fingers, his body, and even the whips holding him up began to tremble.

Watching the two of them lunge at him side by side, phrases echoed through Muzan’s collapsing brains.

’What’s so amusing...? What’s so pleasurable...? What do you think lives are?’

’I’m curious... what will you taste like?!’

In that instant, Muzan felt a sudden warmth spread through his crotch.
