After his initial surge of excitement faded, the Silent King calmed himself and ascended the steps of his throne.

Holding aloft the warscythe that symbolized both his authority and his unique command protocols, he activated one of the throne’s most ancient mechanisms.

At his will, a pillar of seething emerald energy surged from the blade’s tip, pouring into a hidden conduit within the throne.

Empowered by the throne’s amplifiers, the energy split—

one beam becoming two,

two becoming four,

four becoming countless threads of light.

Moments later, these radiant filaments shot skyward from the apex of the pyramid-ship, weaving themselves into a colossal lattice across the surrounding starfields.

A net of living green light stretched through the void.

—

The effects were instantaneous.

Across the entire extragalactic star system he ruled—after tens of millions of years of dormancy—countless Necron legions stirred at once.

Tombs shuddered.

Sarcophagi split open.

Cold metal bodies ignited with emerald life.

The awakening was so vast that space itself seemed to tremble.

But having slept for unimaginable ages, the legions’ power reserves were critically low.

So they did what Necrons always did:

They fed.

Within minutes—mere minutes—tens of thousands of stars were drained of all nuclear energy, collapsing into cold, lifeless embers.

In the following hours, the number only grew.

Entire civilizations looked on in horror as their suns went dark.

Panic swept through countless species who believed the universe itself was dying.

And the Necrons?

They paid these civilizations no more attention than a human pays to ants crushed beneath their heel upon waking.

It was nothing personal—just refueling.

—

After several days, the vast Necron armies were fully recharged.

Feeling the renewed power radiating from his subjects, the Silent King nodded in satisfaction.

Six million years of preparation had not been wasted.

The time had come.

He would march for the Milky Way—

reunite with his awakening dynasties—

and annihilate all who dared stand in the way of Necron dominion.

But at that moment, an urgent communiqué flashed across his throne’s command displays.

—.

“Intrusion detected on the frontier. Enemy biological lifeforms engaging border phalanxes.”

The Silent King frowned.

“Biological attackers? On my territory?”

He opened the transmission feed.

Displayed upon the central holo-screen was a scene of brutal close-quarters combat:

Necron phalanxes locked in battle with swarms of chitinous creatures.

Knife-limbed humanoids hacking at Necron Warriors with startling ferocity.

Gargantuan bio-ships, tens of kilometers long, vomiting near–lightspeed corrosive projectiles from tooth-filled maws.

Even the Silent King—who had witnessed countless alien species during the War in Heaven—could not immediately identify this one.

A new enemy.

A hungry one.

After a short moment of contemplation, he issued orders:

“Reinforce the border. Destroy these organisms. Capture viable specimens for study.”

—

Meanwhile — The Tyranids Respond

The Tyranid swarm that had encountered the border phalanx sent its own report back through the bio-psychic network.

Deep in the void, the Hive Mind registered the revelation.

A thought pulsed through extragalactic space—cold, calculating, vast.

“Allocate authority to nearest command node. Dispatch five trillion drones from forward extraction tendrils.”

Far away, a local Hive Tyrant received the directive.

These units were not frontline warriors.

Not vanguard organisms.

Not bio-titans or assault swarms.

They were resource-gatherers.

Extraction drones.

The mining corps.

After all, since their ancient war against the Eldrazi-like monstrosities that had once driven them from their original hunting grounds, the Tyranids had been on the move—consuming star systems by the tens of thousands.

Civilizations perished beneath them like insects beneath a flamethrower.

No one bothered to count how many.

Even the smallest splinter—

the vanguard of the vanguard—

could scour entire alien empires into silence.

And in this moment, these “miners” now viewed the Necron border fleet as nothing more than an inconvenient cluster of pebbles blocking their digging path.

They dispatched a scout swarm to deal with it.

—

Reinforcements from the Silent King soon arrived.

Their commander did not engage immediately.

Instead, he activated a long-range biosignature scanner to gauge enemy numbers before committing forces.

The scanner hummed—

then screamed.

The display lit up with a solid wall of life signals.

Billions.

Trillions.

Then the counter began to climb into twenty-digit integers.

The Necron commander froze.

Even his emotionless reactor core hesitated for half a second.

This was no raiding party.

This was not even a vanguard swarm.

This was something far worse.

Without pride or hesitation, he transmitted an emergency request back to the Silent King:

“Immediate reinforcement required. Enemy numbers beyond projected limits.”

The Silent King himself stared at the data feed.

A tide of living organisms vast enough to blot out a starfield.

“Where could such numbers come from…? Another migrating extragalactic civilization?”

He sent ten times more reinforcements—determined to crush the threat before it could spread.

Unbeknownst to him, the astronomical Tyranid swarm his scouts detected was not the main hive fleet.

Not the vanguard.

Not even the scouts of the vanguard.

It was merely—

the vanguard of the mining division’s preliminary survey team.

The real Tyranid forces had not arrived yet.

When they did, the galaxy would truly learn the meaning of hunger.
