Chapter 157: Farewell.
It didn’t take him particularly long to reach the residence, and upon arriving, he knocked on the door before waiting for someone to answer.
A short while later, the door opened, revealing Abigail, who seemed rather surprised to see him standing outside.
"Oh, you’re back!"
Osborne nodded.
"Good morning."
"Good morning, dear. Please, come in."
Abigail stepped aside to allow him entry, and after thanking her, Osborne walked into the house.
The familiar surroundings hadn’t changed much since his previous visit, and he could still remember how Nicholas had offered him shelter despite knowing practically nothing about him.
It was a rather simple household, but the kindness he had received from them was something he hadn’t forgotten.
"Is Sir Nicholas around?" Osborne asked.
"He’s in the other room with Vivian. I’ll go get him."
Abigail turned towards the adjoining room, but before she could take more than a few steps, a familiar voice suddenly called out.
"It’s gotten quite lively here. I was wondering who could be the reason." Nicholas chuckled.
Nicholas soon appeared from the other room, and upon seeing their guest, his expression brightened with surprise.
"It’s always a pleasure to see our silent knight." Nicholas patted Osborne kindly on the shoulder.
Osborne nodded in greeting.
"Good morning."
"Morning. So what brings you here? It’s not every day you return this early."
"I hope there’s no trouble to speak of."
"I’m afraid this will be my last day here. I simply came to inform you beforehand."
Nicholas froze before a helpless look emerged on his face. "It’s alright. There’s no need to apologise, Mr. Dokebai."
"It was bound to happen sooner or later. I know we were only a stop in your journey. Though I’m proud to say I’m honoured to have been a part of it."
Osborne nodded, a rare warm smile emerging beneath his helm.
Meanwhile, Vivian, who had been listening from the adjoining room, finally stepped out after hearing Osborne’s voice.
"Couldn’t you stay just a few more days~" She said.
"I would if I could," Osborne said.
Vivian’s expression changed slightly, and for a moment, she seemed to want to say something, but before she could gather her thoughts, Nicholas quickly stepped forward.
"Well, there’s no helping it if he has somewhere important to be."
He gave his daughter a brief glance, afraid that she might say something that could upset their guest, especially considering how friendly she had been towards him during his previous stay.
He knew his daughter had grown comfortable with his presence in their home, but sometimes in life, there came a time when one needed to accept things as they were.
---
Nicholas wished Osborne the best of luck, while Abigail and Vivian also offered their own words of encouragement, although it was clear that none of them were particularly pleased about his sudden departure.
They had only known him for a short while, but the impression he had left on the family was quite positive, especially considering how polite and considerate he had been throughout his stay.
"Since you’re leaving, why don’t you take a few things with you?" Nicholas suggested, turning towards his wife. "We still have some grain left, and I’m sure we can spare a little."
"That’s right!" Abigail quickly agreed. "You’ve helped us quite a bit during your stay, so please don’t refuse."
Vivian nodded along, although she seemed more interested in finding an excuse to keep him around for a little longer.
Osborne shook his head.
"There’s no need for that. You’ve already done more than enough."
"Come now, it’s nothing much," Nicholas insisted. "Besides, you wouldn’t want us to feel bad after you’ve done so much for our family."
’But all I did was clear a farm...’ Osborne found their actions strange.
To him, that didn’t seem like a big deal. To be honest, it felt like a workout to him when he did it.
But to Nicholas’s family, that simple act had saved them a huge sum of time, and they could never forget such a wonderful favour.
Not only that, but he also helped Nicholas on several occasions, which they’d all come to know.
Even now, Nicholas found going to the merchant association easier thanks to Osborne’s intervention.
To them, there was no better friend of the family than him.
Osborne was about to decline again, but seeing how determined the old man was, he eventually decided against arguing any further.
After all, refusing their kindness repeatedly would only make things awkward, and he had no particular reason to offend people who had treated him well.
"Very well." Osborne let out a defeated sigh.
Nicholas immediately smiled before turning towards Abigail, who went to gather a few things from the house.
It didn’t take long before she returned with a small sack containing some grain, while Nicholas brought out a little money that he had managed to set aside.
Although the amount wasn’t particularly large, it was still a meaningful gift coming from a family that didn’t have much to spare.
Osborne accepted both gifts after thanking them, and Vivian watched from the side, still trying to accept the fact that he was really leaving.
After exchanging a few more words, Osborne finally took his leave, leaving the family behind as he continued towards the road leading out of town.
---
Osborne walked along the road with the sack in hand, occasionally glancing around to make sure there was nobody nearby before storing it inside his sub-space.
’Now that that’s been taken care of, there’s still something I need to do.’ He pondered to himself.
He still hadn’t sold the valuables he’d gotten from those despicable traffickers, and considering the amount of space they occupied in his sub-space, he figured it would be better to get rid of them sooner rather than later.
Of course, there was also the matter of finding a suitable buyer, as he wasn’t particularly interested in wasting his time visiting different shops just to sell a few items at a time.
’Would it be better to simply sell everything to Albert?’
