Chapter 130: Marquess Raven.
Roseline raised her head to look at her, noticing that her usually quiet subordinate seemed to have something on her mind, and she gestured for her to continue rather than keeping her thoughts to herself.
"What do you mean?"
"Don’t you think it’s odd that something like this was able to happen beneath their watch in the first place, my lady?"
Guinevere’s question caused Roseline’s expression to change slightly, as she had already considered the possibility that the bureau’s failure was more than simple incompetence, although she hadn’t yet reached a conclusion about what might have happened.
"What are you suggesting?" Roseline asked, her eyes narrowing as she studied Guinevere’s face.
"Are you saying those blasted demons might have already infiltrated the Kingdom’s Bureau of Investigation?"
"It isn’t impossible, my lady, and although I wouldn’t go as far as to accuse the entire bureau of being involved, I must admit that their sudden decision to withdraw us from the matter doesn’t seem particularly natural to me."
Guinevere kept her tone respectful, knowing that such a claim was not something that could be made lightly, especially when the organisation in question possessed the authority to investigate crimes and enforce the kingdom’s laws.
Still, she couldn’t ignore the strange circumstances surrounding the entire incident, since the McClains had somehow managed to conceal the presence of demons beneath their estate, and the bureau’s response had been to prevent the Roosevelt family from investigating the matter further.
Even if the officials were simply trying to protect their reputation, there was no reason for them to be so eager to take the investigation away from Roseline unless they had something to hide or feared that her people might discover something they didn’t want others to know.
Roseline remained silent for several moments, carefully considering Guinevere’s words while weighing the possible consequences of acting on such suspicions without any solid evidence.
If demons had truly infiltrated the bureau, then the situation was far more serious than she had initially expected, since it would mean that the very organisation responsible for investigating suspicious activities within the kingdom might already be compromised.
However, if the bureau was innocent and she accused them without proof, she would only give Marquess Raven another reason to make things difficult for her, while potentially damaging the Roosevelt family’s standing among the other noble houses.
"Then what do you propose we do from here?" Roseline finally asked, her voice carrying a hint of irritation as she looked toward Guinevere. "Should we simply sit back and wait while those filthy creatures spread throughout the kingdom?"
"That would hardly be wise, my lady, although our current situation does make it difficult to proceed without drawing unnecessary attention to ourselves."
Guinevere lowered her head slightly, understanding that her mistress was not the sort of person who would willingly sit back and allow a threat to grow simply because the people responsible for dealing with it had ordered her to stay out of their way.
"I would have suggested heading to the capital and requesting an audience with His Majesty, my lady, but there is one little problem that we haven’t been able to resolve."
Roseline’s fingers stopped tapping against the desk as she looked at Guinevere, already suspecting what she was about to say, although she allowed her to finish speaking rather than interrupting her.
"We still haven’t found my lord, your husband."
At the mention of Osborne, a slightly annoyed look crossed Roseline’s features, and she leaned back in her chair while letting out a quiet breath through her nose.
Of all the complications she had to deal with, her husband’s disappearance was the one she found the most irritating, especially since he had managed to vanish without leaving behind any clear information about where he had gone or what he intended to do.
She had already ordered an investigation into his whereabouts, but the information gathered so far had been far from satisfactory.
Roseline had no intention of admitting it openly, but the lack of information was beginning to bother her more than she cared to acknowledge.
However, that was a matter she would have to deal with separately, because the problem in front of her was far more complicated than simply locating her missing husband.
If she went to the capital and requested permission to conduct a proper investigation into the demons, she would have to explain why she believed such an investigation was necessary, which would inevitably bring the matter to the attention of the royal court and the other influential families within the kingdom.
In other words, she would be announcing to the entire kingdom that demons had managed to establish themselves within its borders, and that the authorities responsible for protecting its people might have failed to notice them.
Such a revelation would cause panic among the common people, damage the reputation of the kingdom’s officials, and potentially give the demons an opportunity to hide their activities while everyone else was distracted by the sudden news.
Worse still, if the suspicions about the bureau’s involvement turned out to be correct, then making the matter public would only alert whoever was responsible, giving them time to destroy evidence or silence the people who might have been able to expose them.
Roseline closed her eyes briefly, weighing her options as she considered the possibility that the situation had already grown beyond what she could handle through ordinary means.
She couldn’t simply ignore the matter, nor could she trust the bureau to investigate it properly when their sudden interference had already raised so many questions, and she certainly couldn’t afford to make a careless move that would place the Roosevelt family in a difficult position.
---
And if, by some mistake, Osborne’s current condition was discovered, her situation wouldn’t exactly look favourable either.
Roseline wasn’t foolish enough to believe that she could keep the matter hidden forever, especially if Osborne’s demonification had progressed to the point where he could no longer pass himself off as an ordinary human, and the last thing she needed was for someone to discover that the husband of the Roosevelt family’s head had turned into a demon.
