Chapter 1343 A Place Left For Dead
Hearing Captain Dagan’s words, I was already ready to humor him but for some other reason, one of the reasons this place stood on its own was not only from Mr. Garciano bu from him as well.
Because firstly, despite his position, he could’ve just taken over this place via a hostile takeover but no, he respected authority and held it out despite their disagreements—but it was also true that he was close to his breaking point, yet still tried some other way to have another person to follow.
While I wasn’t sure that bodes well for his leadership capabilities, there were just some people who were meant to hold a certain position but not actually be the ones to keep things together.
And I could just be reading into this as usual but that was just the vibes I got from him seeing that he’d like input from some other kid he had just heard of and had only been with for the day.
However, not only did I keep a close watch of his troops’ formations and overall combat capacity—since they had a bit of taste earlier on the roads and had since calmed down a bit—I was also watching how he would direct everyone else, especially how he gives out his orders.
[Captain, there’s movement on the other side of the wall from where we are stationed—]
“Proceed as is.”
[Captain, groups 3 and 7 are in need of backup on the South side of the subdivision, we’re just holding until help arrives but help is needed urgently!]
“Have group 7 abandon their route to join group 3 in that intersection. Also, have group 5 slow their advance and after groups 3 and 7 clear those last two houses, circle back to group 7’s original route and have group 5 continue their earlier pace.”
[Captain, there’s a weird sound coming from this building!]
Enjoy new adventures from empire
“How weird?”
[Like really unusual—]
“Goddamit, Brusko! I don’t know your fucking preferences! Describe the weird sound in detail!”
[A-AH— Apologies! I-It’s lots of s-scratching and groaning, captain, sir! It sounds like it’s coming from several undead!]
“Sounds to me like a Tuesday! Proceed as is!”
[Y-Yes, sir!]
With that said, Captain Dagan’s way of doing things was pretty textbook—though a little rough around the edges—but it emboldened his favorite term which was “Proceed as is!” Like if it’s not broken, why fucking fix it? However, the same couldn’t be said for Sgt.
Lorraine because she was like a watered-down version of how Tatiana fought because she’d go to where the thick of the fight was—but in her case, she had a group with her that’d follow her assault.
She’d rush in with this worn-down fire axe with a bandaged handle, and the axe head had definitely seen a lot of abuse because of how deformed it had gotten.
If anything, it was more of a blunt weapon at this point and the only reason I could think of as to how she kept using that pile of junk was sentimental value. It’d be better to hand her a club because of the way she fights—a rush to topple the dead over and then an overhead finisher—and that was the main reason her axe head was chipped to fuck.
While Tatiana would make that motion with her axe as well, she’d almost always end the bout while her target was still standing unless it was really needed to be taken down to the ground, which involved a lot of setups.
Then again, her method of fighting was still viable and it worked but yeah, there were just better ways to take care of the dead than make a habit of making them lay flat on their backs before delivering the finishing blow.
And in regards to her six-man group, they were doing almost the same thing—but in pairs—making their combo make much more sense than what their commanding officer was currently doing.
But yeah, one caveat of bringing them down this way was the knockback effect on the ones behind her target which would inevitably slow down the rush of the dead to a degree, and it’d give them more space and have them a little more selective as to where their dead would take theirs.
In any case, looking at their other groups, none seemed to stand out—and as mediocre as it may sound to say that they were all average, they never attempted to do something stupid or heroic as they stuck to their roots and did what they could do with the minimal amount of risk.
Anyone could say that fighting a zombie head-on was risky, but then again, it’s been a year plus change since the world ended and you probably deserved to die if you still didn’t know how to handle a regular deadhead.
And after maybe close to two hours, Captain Dagan’s group fully cleared and closed off the said subdivision. The only disappointing thing that I could say about it was that there was nothing of importance we took back—even essential items that were usually lying around in abandoned homes—because that place was cleared long ago. They just had to leave it open, making the dead occupy it once again.
So yeah, I added it to the list of things they needed to improve upon because this place was known for its apartments, subdivisions, etc., and especially their building materials—which Mr. Garciano put on the table for trade long ago—they should be making full use of it.
I mean, they were making use of it—a little excessively so in their fortress—leaving other places open for zombie migrations, relocations, and re-infestations. In all honesty, I wouldn’t mind clearing the same area because I was more familiar with it but if the loot doesn’t respawn or the dead doesn’t come with it, then what’s the fucking point?
While we do have kill zones where we gather the dead and kill them over and over and over, this place would be categorized as an abandoned kill zone, or in a much better term, a place left for dead.
