Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Chapter 80: The World Has Not Stood Still

The festival unfolded beneath a cloudless sky, an illusion of peace draped carefully over the territory.

Vibrant banners fluttered above the stone streets. Musicians played rhythmic melodies beneath carved archways, while merchants called out their wares to the crowds gathering in the central plaza. Children ran laughing between the wooden stalls with warm pastries clutched in their hands, weaving around seasoned adventurers and local warriors assembling near the raised stone platform.

It was a rare day of celebration—a day dedicated to the enduring legacy of the Demon Destruction Sword.

At the center of the bustling plaza stood a monument carved from pale stone, depicting the legendary weapon. Its massive blade pointed toward the heavens, surrounded at its base by carvings of faceless warriors who had stood against the dark in ages past.

The festival’s primary attraction was a series of martial demonstrations.

Local fighters and passing travelers were openly invited to step onto the grand platform to display their swordsmanship, physical prowess, or magical control. Those few who managed to distinguish themselves in the ring would receive an exclusive invitation to meet the elusive Lord of the territory herself.

The vast crowd cheered loudly as another hopeful participant stepped onto the stone platform.

A heavily armored young man raised his broadsword, taking a standard guard.

"Begin!" the herald shouted.

The challenger rushed forward with a fierce battle cry, bringing his heavy weapon down with every ounce of strength he possessed.

The veteran instructor standing opposite him didn’t even draw his own blade. He merely shifted a half-step to the side and redirected the kinetic force of the strike with his scabbard. The young man stumbled, carried entirely by his own wasted momentum, nearly falling to his knees on the hard stone.

Good-natured laughter erupted from the watching audience.

"Again!" the instructor called out, resetting his stance.

The young man gritted his teeth, his face flushing with embarrassment, and forced himself upright. This time, he approached with more caution. His sword moved in a tight, sweeping arc.

The instructor blocked it effortlessly with a sharp flick of his wrist.

The young man was dismantled in a matter of seconds. Yet, when he finally stepped back and offered a respectful bow of defeat, the audience applauded him warmly for his effort.

High above the bustling plaza, standing in the shadows of an ornate balcony overlooking the festival, Seraphine watched the proceedings.

Her porcelain features remained calm, concealing every thought.

The distant cheers, the swelling music, and the laughter reached her ears through the open archways. She allowed herself to simply absorb the sight below.

Thousands had gathered without fear, confident that their homes and families were safe under her watch.

"Lady Seraphine."

An attendant approached from the shadows of the throne room, bowing deeply.

"The final preparations are complete, my lady. The successful participants will be permitted to enter the upper hall to meet you immediately after the final demonstration concludes."

Seraphine gave a measured nod. "Very well."

The attendant bowed again and quietly withdrew, leaving her alone with the wind.

Her piercing gaze returned to the towering stone monument in the plaza.

The Demon Destruction Sword. Its bloody legacy had endured long after the people who forged it vanished into history.

A chilling breeze passed through the high balcony, stirring her elegant garments.

Seraphine looked past the celebrating city, lifting her eyes toward the hazy horizon.

*How long will it take?*

Her eyes narrowed, centuries of waiting weighing on her thoughts.

*When exactly will you arrive?*

She was waiting for the reincarnation. She was waiting for Kōya.

But before she could pursue the thought further into the past—

A mechanical shriek tore through the crisp air.

It was not a normal horn. It was a deafening, oscillating arcane alarm that rattled the glass in the window panes.

The cheerful music instantly stopped. The joyful voices vanished, replaced by a collective gasp. For one terrifying moment, the entire crowded plaza fell into a paralyzed silence.

Then, the secondary alarm sounded, higher and more frantic than the first.

People began screaming, turning their faces toward the sky in blind panic.

"What is that?!"

"An emergency siege signal!"

"Look! The clouds!"

A massive spatial distortion opened high above the territory.

Streaks of hyper-condensed arcane energy descended from the clouds, tearing through the atmosphere toward the packed city at apocalyptic speed.

The seasoned territory guards immediately drew their weapons, barking orders over the sirens. The veteran adventurers in the crowd surged toward the edges of the plaza, forcefully guiding the stampeding civilians away from the exposed streets.

"Everyone, remain calm!"

"Move swiftly toward the underground shelters! Keep moving!"

But before the crushing panic could fully take hold of the city, the sky changed.

A translucent arcane barrier materialized instantly above the territory. It expanded outward in an enormous dome, its vast surface shimmering with interlocking golden geometric patterns. The entire sprawling settlement was seamlessly enclosed beneath it, the shield stretching far beyond the outer stone walls and anchoring deep into the surrounding earth.

The incoming strikes hit the barrier.

The impacts shook the air, their force reverberating through the chests of everyone below.

A second searing blast followed. Then a third, heavier than the rest.

The golden forcefield rippled like water disturbed by a heavy stone.

Blinding energy spread across its curved surface, branching outward from each impact. Light traveled through the barrier in calculated patterns, dispersing the destructive force and illuminating the sky with a network of golden veins.

The terrified people in the plaza watched the spectacle in breathless silence.

The sword’s ancient barrier was absorbing the attacks.

The golden energy continued spreading, dissipating the heat. For a long, suspended moment, the entire protective dome seemed to glow with the light of a second sun.

Then, the brilliant light began to slowly, safely fade.

The remaining force disappeared into the magical grid. Not a single section of the shield had cracked. The dome remained intact, humming with quiet power.

The deafening sirens gradually whined to a halt.

A little girl standing trembling in the plaza, clutching her mother’s dress, stared upward in awe.

"Mom..."

Her terrified mother looked up at the shimmering golden sky. She let out a shuddering breath and smiled, tears welling in her eyes. "Don’t be afraid, sweetheart."

An elderly, scarred man laughed loudly from somewhere deep within the recovering crowd.

"Don’t flatter yourselves, demons! We are safe here!"

Several anxious people turned toward his booming voice.

He pointed a weathered finger triumphantly toward the towering stone monument in the center of the square. "Our true saviour is with us!"

His words spread through the packed plaza, giving the frightened crowd something to believe in.

"Our saviour!"

"The sacred sword protects us!"

"Long live the Demon Destruction Sword!"

The suffocating tension broke entirely. People began cheering, the sound rising into a deafening roar of defiance and fervor. The frightened children looked toward the stone monument with renewed excitement, while the tense adventurers warily lowered their drawn weapons.

The festival resumed, but the atmosphere had changed.

The people were no longer merely celebrating a dusty legend. They had witnessed its protection firsthand.

High above them, the golden barrier faded from sight, returning the sky to a clear blue.

Seraphine had not joined in the blind, relieved cheering of her people.

She stood perfectly still on the high balcony, her cold eyes locked onto the exact atmospheric coordinates from which the orbital attacks had descended.

Her porcelain expression had become a mask of glacial fury.

This was not the first time this had happened.

Someone was systematically testing her territory’s defenses, probing for weaknesses and measuring response times. Each passing month brought heavier, more coordinated strikes.

She turned from the stone railing, her silken robes snapping in the wind.

"Prepare a comprehensive report of any structural damage to the outer wards immediately," she commanded the returning attendant.

"Yes, Lady Seraphine."

"And dispatch the scouts. Find out where that strike originated."

The attendant bowed, sensing the lethal chill in her voice.

Seraphine cast one final glance toward the cheering plaza and the towering stone sword.

The people blindly believed they were perfectly safe.

She fully intended to butcher whoever was trying to prove them wrong.

Far above the cloud layer, an enormous structure continued moving silently through the thin, freezing sky.

It was a sprawling, dark castle. Its jagged, obsidian towers rose like the silhouette of a nightmare fortress ripped from the bedrock of the earth and suspended in the heavens. Massive, complex architectural structures extended deep beneath its central body, while several humming arcane pillars supported the floating architecture.

The fortress passed smoothly through the dense clouds without slowing its relentless momentum.

Inside one of its cavernous, sterile command chambers, a cloaked figure stood motionless before a glowing viewing surface.

Telemetry from the failed orbital attack covered the glass. The deployment of the golden barrier. The branching, spreading energy grids. The complete absorption of the incoming kinetic force.

A high-ranking subordinate knelt on the polished black floor nearby, his head bowed in dread.

"The probing operation has failed, my Lord."

The cloaked figure did not respond, their eyes tracking the golden data streams.

"The elite demon vanguard we discreetly dispatched to her territory to test the ground defenses were all killed. We have confirmed through the soul-links that none of them survived the encounter."

Silence stretched agonizingly through the cold room.

The subordinate lowered his head even further, bracing for execution. "They were not defeated through automated magical defenses, my Lord. The final reports indicate that she personally descended and slaughtered them with her own hands."

The figure slowly turned away from the screen.

"We have been methodically attacking her."

The subordinate remained paralyzed in silence.

"The elite demons I sent..." The figure looked back at the recorded image of the golden barrier. "They were killed not by her borrowed power, but by her own hands."

A faint, chilling sound escaped the depths of the figure’s cowl. It might have been a dry laugh. Or it might have been profound, lethal irritation.

With a wave of a gloved hand, the main viewing surface changed.

A highly detailed, intricate schematic diagram of the Demon Destruction Sword appeared on the glass.

The legendary weapon was illustrated from several tactical angles, accompanied by scrolling margins of arcane notes and theoretical measurements. Its legendary defensive mechanism had clearly been studied repeatedly by the brightest minds in the castle, but the available engineering information remained frustratingly incomplete.

The figure stared hungrily at the diagram.

"The sword..."

A long, calculating pause.

"If I cannot physically have the original weapon yet... then I will simply need the original blueprints to forge my own."

The subordinate bravely raised his head an inch. "The original blueprints, my Lord?"

"Yes."

The figure turned gracefully toward a secondary display terminal. It showed a live, structural diagnostic of the enormous, humming arcane pillars currently supporting the moving castle’s immense weight. Several structural diagrams appeared beside them, each marked with incredibly detailed stress measurements and magical calculations.

"The levitation pillars are functioning perfectly," the figure noted, examining the complex diagrams with visible interest. "It is truly a marvel of genius to have constructed them."

The subordinate hesitated, unsure of his standing. "Should we continue the orbital attacks on her territory?"

The figure did not answer the tactical question immediately. Instead, their calculating gaze returned obsessively to the sword’s blueprint.

"First, find me the specific information I require."

The massive castle continued moving relentlessly through the sky, a creeping shadow over the world. Its humming pillars remained perfectly stable.

And somewhere deeply buried within its vast, dark structure, the bloody search for the sword’s ancient blueprints continued.
