Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Chapter 66: Aftermath : The Broken Transmission

  • Next Chapter

Kaela knew something was terribly wrong long before her exhausted mind could process what she was seeing.

The heavy, freezing rain had been falling for hours.

It covered the dark streets of the Slane Territory in a constant gray curtain. The downpour turned the uneven stone roads slick, reflecting the dim yellow light spilling from the barred windows of the surrounding buildings.

Kaela walked alone beneath the deluge.

Her traveler’s cloak was soaked through, clinging to her armored shoulders. Cold rainwater ran from her silver-white hair, matting her animal ears, and dripped down the scarred sides of her face.

She barely noticed the physical discomfort.

Her attention was fixed entirely on the glowing magical device hovering silently above the muddy intersection.

A localized transmission.

She had seen this highly specific, advanced broadcast magic before. Usually, it was reserved for high-ranking military communications or wealthy merchants. She recognized the arcane signature.

The glowing image flickered.

Static-like arcane distortions crawled across the unstable projection, twisting the light.

Then, the picture stabilized.

Kaela stopped completely in the middle of the rain-swept street.

Her breath caught in her throat.

A woman appeared inside the transmission.

She was young. And heartbreakingly familiar.

Her dark eyes were wide and profoundly frightened.

Her bruised body was heavily restrained by thick, glowing iron.

Kaela stared at the projection, paralyzed.

"No..."

The captive woman looked around desperately, her gaze darting off-camera.

Her exhausted voice finally broke through the static.

"Is anyone there?"

Kaela took a splashing step forward.

The freezing rain struck her face. She didn’t feel it.

The young woman in the projection slowly lifted her head.

"Please..."

Kaela’s scarred fingers tightened into rigid claws.

She knew that exact face. She knew that voice.

Yuna.

Her former master’s chosen successor. The stubborn girl she had personally trained in the courtyard dirt. The warrior who had rightfully inherited Stormfront.

The girl who, by all accounts, should have been dead.

Kaela moved closer to the hovering transmission, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Yuna?"

The unstable image flickered again, losing resolution.

Yuna looked frantically toward something standing just outside the projection’s frame. Genuine fear crossed her bruised face.

Then, she turned back to face the magical lens.

"If anyone can hear this..."

Her strong voice visibly trembled.

"Please... help me."

Kaela’s heart hammered against her chest.

"Where are you?!" Kaela shouted at the silent projection.

The transmission distorted. Yuna’s desperate image broke apart into jagged, static fragments.

Then, it briefly returned.

In that microsecond of clarity, Kaela’s tactical eyes scanned the chamber around the captive girl.

Dark, polished stone walls. Heavy arcane metal restraints locking her wrists. Humming magical equipment in the background. Glowing crystals.

Too many dark crystals.

Something fundamental about the room felt completely wrong.

It was not simply a dangerous dungeon cell. It was meticulously organized.

Someone highly intelligent had built this place. Someone powerful had been methodically keeping people restrained there for a specific purpose.

Kaela stepped directly beneath the glowing projection.

"Yuna!"

The transmission flickered wildly.

Yuna’s dark eyes widened. For one brief moment, it seemed almost as though the terrified girl had heard her teacher’s voice through the ether.

Then, Yuna shouted with everything she had left.

"Kōya!"

Kaela froze.

Yuna’s desperate expression changed.

Profound hope and absolute desperation warred on her bruised face at once.

"Kōya, if you can hear me out there..."

The arcane image shook violently, the magic failing.

"Find me."

Kaela’s eyes widened in sheer shock.

Kōya.

The name struck her harder than any physical weapon could have.

She knew that name intimately.

Kōya Amane. The quiet, intense child she had once watched grow up in the village. The troubled boy deeply connected to Yuna.

The dangerous boy who secretly carried something far greater, and far darker, than anyone in the village had ever understood.

Yuna’s desperate voice came through the static one final time.

"Kōya..."

Then, the transmission exploded into a blinding flash of white light.

Kaela stumbled backward, shielding her eyes from the glare.

"What?!"

The image entirely shattered. The complex magical projection twisted violently in the air like a dying animal before collapsing inward on itself.

Something catastrophic had just happened on the other end of the line.

Kaela stared blindly at the empty air where the broken transmission had hovered.

"No."

She reached out desperately toward the empty rain.

"Come back."

Nothing. Only the cold wind.

"Yuna!"

Absolute silence. The transmission was permanently gone.

Kaela stood alone beneath the relentless rain.

Her scarred hand remained raised toward the empty sky. Her fingers trembled.

She numbly lowered her arm.

Yuna had been alive when the transmission was recorded.

But Kaela had no way of knowing exactly when that had been.

That was all the tactical intelligence she possessed.

She didn’t know exactly when the message had been recorded. She didn’t know where the dark, crystal-filled room was located. She didn’t know the identity of the monster who had captured her.

She already knew the truth about Yuna’s fate.

But the message had been recorded before that end, and Kaela had no idea how long it had remained dormant before reaching her.

But there was one undeniable thing Kaela knew.

Kōya desperately needed to know about this.

If the boy was actually still alive. If he had somehow miraculously survived the invasion. If he was anywhere near this cursed territory.

He absolutely needed to know.

Kaela slowly turned her back on the empty intersection, looking down the dark, winding streets of Slane.

Then, she began walking.

The freezing rain became significantly heavier, washing over her armor.

Kaela moved through the busy streets entirely without direction, her mind reeling.

She barely noticed the dangerous people moving around her in the gloom. Anxious merchants hurriedly pulled their heavy carts beneath canvas awnings to escape the downpour. Heavily armored territory guards walked past her in organized patrols. Corrupted demons and desperate humans moved through the city together in a tense coexistence.

Some carried visible weapons. Some carried official travel documents. Some wore the dark identification marks of the ruling class.

The massive city of Slane was very much alive.

Yet, Kaela felt entirely as though she were walking through a suffocating nightmare.

Yuna.

The horrific image wouldn’t leave her mind. The heavy iron restraints. The humming dark crystals. The absolute, naked fear.

And that final, desperate name.

Kōya.

Kaela stopped beneath a wide stone archway, seeking temporary shelter.

Her hands curled into fists until her nails bit into her palms.

She had utterly failed her.

The dark thought came unbidden, crashing over her.

She should have been there during the invasion. She should have stood and protected her. She should have known the enemy was coming.

Kaela closed her eyes, leaning heavily against the cold stone wall.

For agonizing years, she had sincerely believed that absolutely whatever remained of her master’s proud legacy was already gone, buried in the mud of the borderlands.

Now, she knew otherwise.

Yuna was alive.

Somewhere in the dark.

And she was actively asking for help.

Kaela opened her eyes, a dangerous fire returning to them.

"I will find you."

Her voice was barely louder than the drumming rain, but it carried the weight of an unbreakable vow.

Then, she pushed off the wall and continued walking.

Hours passed in a blur of gray stone and heavy rain.

Kaela eventually reached a much narrower, significantly poorer district.

The well-lit main streets of central Slane disappeared entirely behind her. The looming buildings here were significantly older. Taller. Darker. The muddy roads were heavily rutted and less maintained.

She walked slowly beneath the sagging overhang of an abandoned building.

Her physical body finally began to give out.

She had not eaten a proper meal in days. She had barely slept a full hour since crossing the border. And the sheer emotional shock of the transmission had violently drained whatever meager adrenaline she had left.

Kaela leaned heavily against the damp brick wall.

Her breathing became ragged and uneven.

She slowly slid downward.

Her armored knees hit the wet stone with a dull thud.

She desperately tried to force herself to stand back up. Her exhausted body flatly refused the command.

"Damn it..."

She lowered herself completely into the dark alley.

Cold rainwater flowed rapidly through the street mere inches from her boots.

Kaela rested her heavy head back against the brick wall.

Her eyes fluttered closed.

For one fleeting moment, she saw Yuna again.

Not heavily restrained in dark iron. Not frightened.

A much younger Yuna. Standing proudly in the sunlight with a wooden practice sword resting easily in her hands. Laughing loudly at a joke. Fiercely training in the dirt. Calling out for her tired teacher to watch her form.

Kaela’s chest tightened painfully.

She opened her eyes to the dark, rainy alley.

"No..."

Her voice broke slightly, betraying her exhaustion.

"Don’t you dare die."

She wasn’t sure whether she was speaking to Yuna. Or to the fading memory.

Or to herself.

Someone was quietly watching her.

A tall, cloaked figure stood perfectly still beneath a nearby sloped roof.

Hidden from the pouring rain. Completely hidden from Kaela’s fading awareness.

They had watched the entire sequence unfold. The sudden transmission. Kaela’s visceral reaction. Her wandering path. Her eventual collapse.

The dark figure tilted their head, analyzing the prey.

"A beastfolk warrior..."

Their calculating gaze moved slowly over Kaela’s slumped body.

The high-quality sword resting at her hip. The dense, muscular physique built for combat. The distinctive animal ears. The rare silver-white hair.

Even completely exhausted and slumped in an alley, she carried herself exactly like someone highly trained for lethal combat.

The hidden observer smiled faintly beneath their hood.

"Interesting."

They stepped out of the shadows, moving closer.

Kaela did not immediately notice the approach. She was drifting, barely conscious.

The cloaked figure stopped several meters away, maintaining a safe tactical distance.

"Strong."

A calculating pause.

"Incredibly rare."

Another pause.

"Highly valuable."

Kaela’s silver eyes opened slightly, struggling to focus on the blur.

Her combat instincts flared. Something felt deeply, fundamentally wrong about the silhouette.

She tried desperately to reach down for her sword.

Her numb hand moved only a few agonizing centimeters.

Far too slow.

The figure watched her struggle with amused detachment.

"You really shouldn’t be wandering completely alone in the lower districts of Slane, little warrior."

Kaela’s vision blurred, doubling the figure.

She forced her back off the wall, trying to sit fully upright.

"Who..."

Her voice was a weak, ragged rasp.

The stranger did not bother to answer.

Kaela desperately tried to stand.

Her exhausted legs completely failed her.

She fell heavily back against the brick wall, gasping for air.

The cloaked figure looked down at her with rapidly increasing, predatory interest.

"You have clearly been through something quite traumatic recently."

Kaela’s silver eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

"Stay..."

She struggled to pull enough air into her lungs to form the threat.

"...away."

The figure smiled, stepping into the dim light.

"I really don’t think that is going to happen."

Kaela’s trembling hand finally reached the hilt of her sword.

Her scarred fingers closed tightly around the familiar leather.

Even completely exhausted. Even severely injured.

Her unadulterated killing intent flooded the narrow alley, thick enough to choke on.

The observer immediately stopped advancing.

For the first time, their amused expression changed.

It wasn’t fear. It was deep, calculating interest.

"Still remarkably dangerous."

Kaela forced her body upright, leveraging her weight against the brick.

Her steel blade came halfway free of the scabbard with a sharp ring.

Then, her remaining strength entirely disappeared.

The heavy weapon slipped completely from her numb hand, clattering loudly onto the wet cobblestones.

Kaela collapsed forward into the mud.

Her eyes finally closed.

The stranger stepped casually forward.

They looked down thoughtfully at the unconscious beastfolk warrior lying in the rain.

Then, they looked up toward the dark, sprawling streets of the Slane Territory.

"A skilled fighter like this..."

Their cruel smile returned in full force.

"...should be worth quite something on the market."

The freezing rain continued falling steadily over the city.

Kaela did not move a single inch.

And somewhere, far beyond the towering walls of Slane, Kōya was still walking relentlessly east.

He did not know that Yuna’s desperate voice had miraculously reached someone through the ether.

He did not know that Kaela had personally witnessed the transmission.

He did not know that the strong woman who had once trained Yuna was now lying completely unconscious and vulnerable in the very territory he was violently approaching.

And he certainly did not know that the massive, dark city of Slane had already begun moving tactical pieces of its own.

The bloody road toward his mother had started long before he had ever reached its iron gates.

Now, somewhere deep inside that enormous, hostile territory, the very first thread of fate had finally been pulled.
