Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child
Chapter 28: The Distant Light
Ten minutes passed in the downpour. Then, a second magical ripple suddenly passed through the heavy air.
Kaela slowly raised her head.
Another transmission formed between the trees. The King of Slane appeared once again, his dark sword wiped clean of blood.
Kaela stared at him with utterly empty, dead eyes.
The king didn’t mention the execution that had just occurred. He didn’t need to. The psychological terror had already been delivered.
Instead, behind him, a massive, glowing tactical map appeared on the wall.
"While our primary forces continue successfully securing the interior territory," he announced to his unseen audience, "our vanguard armies have begun critical operations against neighboring strategic settlements."
The map expanded, pulling focus. Several small border villages were marked with burning red runes.
Then, another location appeared on the map, far to the east.
The Royal Academy.
Kaela’s empty eyes suddenly sharpened.
The king continued, his voice smooth and clinical. "The next stage of our glorious expansion will involve the rapid acquisition of additional territory, necessary labor, and potent sources of magical energy."
Kaela’s stomach twisted into a hard knot.
The image shifted from the map to a live feed of the battlefield.
She saw caravans. Burning buildings. She saw hundreds of captured civilians, bound in heavy iron, being loaded into massive wagons under the brutal guard of demon mercenaries.
Then, the camera angle panned sharply, moving past the transport wagons toward the epicenter of the destroyed town.
Kaela saw lightning. Brilliant, erratic, blue-white arcs flashing through the thick black smoke.
Her eyes widened in disbelief.
"No..."
A figure emerged through the smoke on the screen. A broken sword. A painfully familiar, battered stance. A specific, drilled way of moving that Kaela had spent three years meticulously perfecting.
Kaela scrambled to her feet, stumbling forward.
The transmission zoomed closer, cutting through the haze.
She saw her.
Yuna.
Alive.
For one impossible, desperate moment, Kaela forgot everything else. She forgot the blood. She forgot the rain. Her heart lurched violently against her ribs.
"Yuna..."
But the relief shattered instantly.
Yuna was entirely surrounded. Brutal, crimson blood restraints held her suspended and helpless. Her uniform was torn and bloodied. Her body was visibly exhausted, shaking with the effort just to breathe. Her legendary weapon was gone, held casually by a Demon Peer standing in the foreground.
Kaela could clearly see the jagged, black curse spreading rapidly across her student’s pale skin, severing her from her magic. She could see the massive, leering demons closing the circle around her.
And she understood immediately.
"No."
On the screen, Yuna’s face was turned away from her captors. She was looking desperately toward the distant, lightening horizon. She looked exactly like a girl who was waiting for someone to come and save her.
Kaela’s eyes filled with hot, blinding tears.
"Yuna."
The transmission feed continued seamlessly. The Peer walked away, abandoning his prize. The demonic soldiers moved closer, their cruel intentions clear in their posture.
Kaela understood exactly what they intended to do to her student before they killed her.
The realization utterly destroyed the final, fragile piece of composure she had managed to retain.
"No!"
She stepped directly into the projection. Her voice cracked, a desperate scream of pure, raw agony.
"Don’t touch her!"
The transmission didn’t hear her. It couldn’t.
On the screen, Yuna struggled weakly against the blood restraints. Her tremendous strength was entirely gone. Kaela watched helplessly, trapped halfway across the world, as the demons closed in.
Then, rain began falling within the transmission, washing over the burning town.
For a terrifying, surreal moment, Kaela could see her own weeping reflection layered faintly over the magical screen.
She was standing in the rain. Yuna was standing in the rain.
Two places. Two women. Both utterly broken, separated by an impossible, insurmountable distance.
Kaela brought a trembling hand up, covering the lower half of her face. Her shoulders began to shake violently. She tried to speak, to offer some final word of comfort, but absolutely nothing came out of her ruined throat.
The image flickered.
"Yuna..."
The transmission distorted, the connection failing.
Kaela lowered her hand, reaching out one last time.
"Please."
The screen fractured into a thousand shards of light.
"Please!"
The image disappeared completely.
Silence returned to the forest, broken only by the steady drum of the downpour.
Kaela stood alone beneath the rain.
She didn’t scream again. She didn’t draw her sword to hack at the trees. She didn’t move.
Her master was dead. His family was lost to the dark.
And Yuna...
Kaela couldn’t finish the thought. It was too heavy. It would crush her entirely.
She had spent years standing on the edge of the training grounds, teaching people how to survive. How to maintain their stance. How to fight through the pain. How to keep moving forward when everything around them collapsed into ash.
But now, standing in the cold mud, there was absolutely nothing left inside her telling her where to go.
Her sword hung uselessly at her hip, a heavy, dead piece of iron.
Slowly, mechanically, she began walking.
One step.
Then another.
She walked blindly out of the forest, entering the narrow, muddy roads of Slane Territory without looking up.
People passed her. Armed demonic patrols passed her. Slave merchants dragging their chains passed her.
She noticed absolutely none of them.
Her wet, dark hair plastered across her face. The freezing rain ran down her cheeks, entirely indistinguishable from the tears beneath it.
"Master..."
Her voice was barely a rasp, stolen by the wind.
She kept walking.
"Yuna..."
Another step.
"Master..."
Another.
"Yuna..."
The names became a hollow mantra. They were the only concepts her shattered mind could still grasp. The only things she could still force her lips to say.
She walked deeper into the hostile territory. The warrior, a woman who had survived countless, horrific battles and mentored the strongest generation the Academy had ever seen, now moved like a lifeless ghost through the rain.
No destination. No tactical purpose. No tomorrow.
Only two names.
"Master..."
"Yuna..."
The rain continued to fall, washing the blood into the dirt.
And Kaela kept walking into the dark alley.
