Chapter 278: A Knack for Angering People
Chapter 278: Chapter 278: A Knack for Angering People
When Bai Wanwan and her Beast Husbands returned to the tribe, the excitement of the Harvest Festival was still in full swing.
Beastmen came and went, chatting happily. Cubs chased each other and played, occasionally snatching a tender piece of meat from an adult Beastman’s hand...
In such a lively atmosphere, no one knew what Bai Wanwan had been through.
Her group returned quietly to their stone house.
Hearing the commotion from her own home, Shi Hua was instantly delighted and said to her Beast Husband, "Sister Wanwan is back."
With that, she stood up and ran.
Mu Feng, helpless, chased after her while holding their cub. "Slow down! She’s back, so everything’s fine. Don’t fall!"
Shi Hua paid him no mind, running over just before Bai Wanwan could enter the house and sit down.
"Sister, you’re finally back! Are you hurt?"
Shi Hua gripped her hand tightly, her worried gaze scanning her from head to toe.
She breathed a small sigh of relief only after seeing that Wanwan’s clothes were neat and she seemed uninjured.
Bai Wanwan patted the back of her hand. "I’m fine. Those Beastmen who came after me were targeting the Young Clan Leader. I was framed by Zhuo Ling, which is why they grabbed me along the way."
Hearing that Zhuo Ling had framed her, anger colored Shi Hua’s honest face, which was usually unaccustomed to such emotion.
"Why does she always have to make things difficult for you, Sister?"
’Sister Wanwan hasn’t done anything wrong. She’s even kind to infertile females like me, yet Zhuo Ling is always causing trouble for her.’
’She had been accustomed to passive acceptance since childhood and didn’t know how to refuse others.’
’But now, she had made up her mind. From now on, she would absolutely not say another word to Zhuo Ling. If she saw her, she would take a detour.’
’If she ever came to her home again, she definitely wouldn’t open the door for her.’
Bai Wanwan saw her pouting, little face puffed up with anger, and wondered what she was thinking.
She couldn’t help but laugh. "I’ve barely said two sentences. What are you so angry about?"
"I just didn’t expect Zhuo Ling to be so awful. I thought since we were from the same tribe, I shouldn’t refuse her friendliness, but she actually did this to you, Sister... From now on, from now on... I’m never going to speak to her again."
Shi Hua was like a little girl throwing a tantrum. Bai Wanwan pulled her down to sit.
She leaned back slightly, raised an eyebrow, and gave a meaningful smile. "There probably won’t be a ’from now on’."
Shi Hua blinked, not seeming to understand. "Sister, what do you mean?"
"Back then, she and I were both captured. While Young Clan Leader Jin Yi was negotiating with those Bear Clan Beastmen, Zhuo Ling tried to sneak away. She was bitten through the leg by a wild wolf. By the time she was brought back, she had already lost a lot of blood. I’m afraid she won’t make it..."
Shi Hua’s mouth fell open in astonishment, as if she hadn’t fully processed the news.
She never expected Zhuo Ling would meet such an end.
"Later, I’m going to the Witch Cave to see how badly Zhuo Ling is injured."
’If it’s not serious, I’ll have to land the final blow.’
Shi Hua immediately said, "Then I’ll go with you, Sister."
Bai Wanwan didn’t refuse. "Alright, then we’ll go together later."
The cubs had already gathered around, leaning against her legs and whimpering nonstop.
The snake cubs had also long since coiled around her. Smelling their Mother’s sweet scent, they all felt very content.
Bai Wanwan picked up the cubs at her feet one by one, kissing them over and over and kneading their small, fluffy ears.
"Mama has to go out for a bit. I’ll come back and play with you tonight, okay?"
The cubs whimpered in unison, clearly disagreeing.
Bai Wanwan had no choice but to play with her little cubs first, petting each of them in turn.
She discovered that it wasn’t just the fluffy cubs that enjoyed being petted by her; even the snake cubs would squint their eyes in comfort when she stroked them.
After chatting with Shi Hua for about an hour while holding the cubs, Shi Hua handed her own cub to Mu Feng and told him to take the children back home.
"I’m going to accompany Sister to the Witch Cave."
Mu Feng was worried. "Then I’ll go with you."
"There’s no need, Sister and I will go..."
Mu Feng was about to say more, but Bai Wanwan reassured him, "My Beast Husbands will be with us later. You just stay home and look after the cubs."
Once that was settled, Bai Wanwan turned to look at her three Beast Husbands.
Xin Feng was preparing their dinner, while Zhu Xiu and Yan Lie were tanning hides.
After a quick glance, Bai Wanwan walked softly over to Yan Lie and Zhu Xiu.
"I want to go to the Witch Cave now. Which of you will come with me?"
Normally, Yan Lie would have responded enthusiastically, but today his mouth moved, yet he said nothing.
Zhu Xiu put down the hide in his hands and said directly, "I’ll go with you."
Bai Wanwan smiled and replied, "Okay."
Her gaze swept over Yan Lie, sensing that something was off with him.
’She knew in her heart that he hadn’t yet moved past the shadows left by the last two incidents.’
So she leaned in close and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Zhu Xiu and I will head out first, then. You can come with me somewhere else next time."
Yan Lie smiled and nodded, trying his best to maintain a brilliant smile, but it clearly didn’t reach his eyes.
"Okay."
’She sighed inwardly.’ Bai Wanwan wanted to say more, but her hand was grasped by a cool one.
"Let’s go. It’ll be dark soon."
Bai Wanwan could only nod. "Alright, we’ll head over now."
Once outside the cave, Bai Wanwan walked with Shi Hua. Zhu Xiu followed behind the two females, his gaze seemingly casual but actually paying close attention to every movement around them.
The Witch Cave was not very far from their home.
It was only a two or three-minute walk.
Agonized wails came from the cave, a sound Bai Wanwan was all too familiar with.
The corners of her mouth curved up. She lifted her skirt, ascended the steps, and was the first to enter the Witch Cave.
The Witch Doctors in the cave saw her and recognized her as the female who had sat beside the Clan Leader at the banquet.
Knowing her status was extraordinary, the Witch Doctors all nodded to her in greeting.
After acknowledging each of them, Bai Wanwan took the initiative to state her purpose. "I’ve come to see the female Zhuo Ling. Can her injuries be treated?"
The Witch Doctors thought she was Zhuo Ling’s friend and was concerned about her condition.
They all seemed a bit troubled. "The Clan Witch is already doing their best to save her..."
No one said anything more.
Bai Wanwan didn’t press them, just smiled and nodded. "Then I’ll go in and see for myself."
Zhuo Ling, dazed with pain, heard Bai Wanwan’s voice. She suddenly became more alert and let out a roar toward the cave entrance.
Bai Wanwan met her roar with a smile and slowly walked inside.
On the stone bed in the Witch Cave, Zhuo Ling had already lost her former delicate beauty and health.
Her face was as pale as paper, and her eyes looked as if they were about to bulge out of their sockets.
"Bai... Wanwan."
Her voice was weak, but one could hear the grit of clenched teeth behind it.
Bai Wanwan walked up to her in a few steps and feigned a sob. "Zhuo Ling, how could you be so unlucky! If you hadn’t run, you wouldn’t have been bitten, and you certainly wouldn’t be gone at such a young age... For the next two hundred years, I’ll be living all alone, and I might not even remember you. You’re just so pitiful!"
Zhuo Ling was already furious just seeing Bai Wanwan alive and well. After hearing her words, she almost couldn’t catch her breath.
