Chapter 230: Her Beast Husbands Have All Arrived
Chapter 230: Chapter 230: Her Beast Husbands Have All Arrived
Xin Feng bit down, snapping the neck of the nearest gray wolf.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw three gray wolves pouncing on Bai Wanwan from the flank. His pupils constricted, and he spun around without hesitation, shielding her with his broad back.
Sharp fangs sank into Xin Feng’s foreleg, instantly soaking his fur with blood.
The next second, Xin Feng disemboweled the gray wolf with his claws.
He then whipped his head around and bit into another gray wolf’s abdomen.
Bai Wanwan’s eyes reddened as she watched the crimson blood gush from Xin Feng’s foreleg.
’This damned beast tide and these damned gray wolves, hell-bent on forcing us into a dead end!’
The rage she had suppressed for days now surged within her.
She gripped Xin Feng tightly with one hand, forcing herself to calmly watch the attacking gray wolves.
Unseen by Xin Feng, a gray wolf crept up from behind, preparing to leap and bite Bai Wanwan, who was on his back.
By the time Xin Feng finally noticed, the gray wolf had already launched itself into the air, its vicious fangs bared and aimed for Bai Wanwan.
Bai Wanwan’s eyes were fixed on its exposed, soft underbelly.
"Xin Feng, don’t move."
Xin Feng was about to lunge, but he froze at Bai Wanwan’s words. With a flick of her wrist, Bai Wanwan plunged the long blade in her hand—fast, precise, and ruthless—into the gray wolf’s abdomen.
SQUELCH...
The blade slid into the flesh with surprising ease. She gave it a vicious twist before yanking it out, and warm wolf blood sprayed across her face.
Seeing this, Xin Feng breathed a sigh of relief and immediately turned to meet the attack of another wolf.
The wolf pack seemed endless. They attacked in cunning waves, wearing down their stamina.
Bai Wanwan assisted from the side, striking fiercely and swiftly whenever she saw an opening. Yet, for every five strikes, only two managed to truly injure the agile beasts.
After dealing with the surrounding threats, Jin Yi quickly returned to provide support, forming a pincer with Xin Feng to protect Bai Wanwan in the center.
"The beast tide is getting closer."
Jin Yi’s voice was tense. He glanced behind him.
The ground had already begun to tremble, indicating that a large number of beasts were stampeding in their direction.
The two males exchanged a grave look.
They might be able to protect the young female from the wolf pack, but against an overwhelming horde of frenzied beasts... they couldn’t possibly guarantee her safety.
’We have to get to the underground river cave as soon as possible!’
Their attacks grew more ferocious, each blow delivered with do-or-die desperation.
Bai Wanwan also seized every opening to strike, but the sheer number of wolves was far beyond their estimations.
THUMP THUMP THUMP...
The sound of the stampeding beasts was like muffled thunder rolling closer, and the air was filled with a nauseating, rank stench.
The nearest trees had already begun to shake, and leaves rained down.
"Break through!" Jin Yi ordered, making a split-second decision.
The remaining dozen or so wolves were still stubbornly blocking the path to the underground river.
Jin Yi’s golden fur stood on end, his muscles taut like a bow. "I’ll clear the way!"
Just then, a series of bloodcurdling howls suddenly erupted from deep within the forest.
Bai Wanwan looked up and saw ancient, towering trees collapsing one after another as a massive black shadow snaked through the woods.
With every swing of that massive Snake Tail, beasts were thrown high into the air like rag dolls.
Bai Wanwan’s heart was about to leap out of her chest.
’Is that... Zhu Xiu?’
Xin Feng caught a glimpse of that familiar figure, and his tense shoulders finally relaxed a little.
But he quickly refocused on the wolves in front of him, clearing the remaining obstacles for the approaching reinforcements.
The King Cobra’s crimson, slitted pupils immediately locked onto the slender figure behind the Silver Wolf.
The anxiety and unease of the past several days vanished into thin air at this moment.
He accelerated, sending beasts flying wherever he passed.
Bai Wanwan watched the giant snake draw closer, and her entire body relaxed.
His faintly red, serpentine eyes were still cold and severe, yet they brought her a sense of peace she’d never known before.
"Zhu Xiu!"
She called out his name.
The King Cobra slithered to her side, lowered his massive head, and gently nuzzled her cheek. "Don’t be afraid,"
his voice was low and melodious, "we’re here."
’We?’
Before Bai Wanwan could react, she saw another agile figure dash out from behind Zhu Xiu.
"Wanwan!"
Yan Lie had clearly heard Bai Wanwan’s voice. He immediately scared off the surrounding beasts with a roar, then quickly turned his head to look around.
Finally, he saw Bai Wanwan not far from Zhu Xiu.
The snow-white leopard leaped up and, like a flash of lightning, appeared before Bai Wanwan.
"You were scared, weren’t you?" Yan Lie anxiously nuzzled her palm, his voice thick with self-reproach for failing to protect her and making her worry.
His snow-white leopard form was covered in scars, yet he still looked majestic and powerful.
When Bai Wanwan stared at him without blinking or saying a word, he started to panic.
He quickly added, "Wanwan, it’s me... Look, I’m fine."
Bai Wanwan looked at the crisscrossing network of scars, large and small, that covered his body. ’This is what he calls fine?’
"Yeah,"
Bai Wanwan blinked hard, trying to force back her tears.
She used to look down on people who cried at the drop of a hat, but now her eyes stung uncontrollably.
She forced a smile and nodded firmly. "Right. You’re all still here... That’s wonderful."
Seeing the shimmer of tears in the young female’s eyes, Yan Lie panicked, unsure of what to do.
He had rushed back day and night, precisely because he was afraid she would be frightened.
’In fact, if it hadn’t been for that ointment Wanwan gave me, I might not have made it back at all.’
"The beast tide is closing in."
Jin Yi’s stern voice shattered the tender moment. "Let’s end this fast and get into the river cave."
Yan Lie swatted away a charging beast with one paw, then turned to Bai Wanwan. "Wanwan, we’ll deal with these pests first. We can talk properly later."
Yan Lie’s form flashed, and he charged into the wolf pack side-by-side with Jin Yi.
Bai Wanwan nodded and turned to look at Zhu Xiu.
Zhu Xiu used his massive body to block the vast majority of the charging beasts.
His giant Snake Tail swept like a whip, sending all approaching beasts flying.
With Bai Wanwan on his back, Xin Feng had a relatively easier time, only needing to deal with the few beasts that slipped past the others.
The males coordinated flawlessly, and their advance suddenly sped up.
As the last wolf blocking the path fell, Jin Yi’s voice came from the front: "Into the cave!"
The moment the males rushed into the cave, they all transformed into their human forms, and the narrow rock cave suddenly seemed much more spacious.
"This place won’t hide us for long," Yan Lie said with a frown, his gaze sweeping over the completely exposed cave entrance.
Xin Feng clapped his shoulder. "There’s an underground river inside. The passage is narrow, so the beasts can’t get through in a pack."
Bai Wanwan glanced back and saw the beast horde flooding in like a tide. Zhu Xiu was still holding them off at the entrance. Her heart clenched with worry. "Zhu Xiu! Forget them, get in here!"
With one last whip of his tail, Zhu Xiu cleared the entrance, then instantly transformed into his human form and rushed inside.
He rushed over, swept Bai Wanwan into his arms, and charged into the narrow underground cavern.
And right on their heels, a massive horde of beasts surged into the cave, a seemingly endless tide...
