Chapter 222: Chapter 222: Tormented All Night Long

By the time the two of them finished eating, the sky outside had grown completely dark.

Jin Yi gathered stones and branches from nearby, sealing the cave entrance tightly, leaving only a few small cracks for air.

After doing all this, he turned to Bai Wanwan.

The female was already so tired she had closed her eyes. Moonlight streamed through the cracks between the stones, landing right on her face.

It made her face look deathly pale and bloodless.

She was curled into a ball, her arms wrapped around her knees. Only now did she look somewhat fragile.

Jin Yi understood completely. A normal female who had been through all this would have likely been screaming and crying in terror back in the forest.

But this female, Bai Wanwan, had been trying her best to control her emotions the entire time.

Jin Yi sighed and leaned against the wall a short distance away from her, closing his eyes.

He had to rest. The more stamina he had, the better their chances of survival.

Jin Yi kept his eyes closed, but he couldn’t fall asleep.

He didn’t know how much time had passed when, just as his consciousness began to fog over, a faint groan startled him from his half-asleep state.

Jin Yi’s eyes shot open, and he looked across to the other side of the cave.

Bai Wanwan was curled up in a ball, her body seemingly trembling uncontrollably.

"Bai Wanwan?" He moved closer and touched her forehead. His brow immediately furrowed. Her skin was burning hot.

A fever!

Jin Yi’s heart sank.

For females, a fever was an extremely dangerous condition.

Their bodies were already much frailer than males’. Out in the wild, with no medicine or doctors, a fever could be fatal.

In her feverish sleep, Bai Wanwan felt cold one moment and hot the next.

"Xin Feng, where are you?"

"Zhu Xiu, you have to come back safely."

"Yan Lie... I know you couldn’t bear to leave me. You’ll definitely come back."

Jin Yi leaned in closer, just in time to hear Bai Wanwan’s murmurs.

"Bai Wanwan, wake up..."

If she could just wake up from the fever, things would be a little better.

But he called her name several times with no response. She just kept muttering...

Gritting his teeth, Jin Yi gently laid Bai Wanwan flat on her back.

When he left, he had promised his Father Beast that he would bring Bai Wanwan back safely.

Her Beast Husband hadn’t just sacrificed himself to save Bai Wanwan; he had saved Jin Yi, too.

No matter how he looked at it, Jin Yi had to take good care of Bai Wanwan.

Fevers were a common illness for cubs and females.

Usually, with the Clan Witch’s care, females and cubs could get through them safely.

But they were in the wild. He had to find Silver Leaf Grass for Bai Wanwan to have any chance of surviving the night.

Just as he was about to turn and leave, the female suddenly grabbed his hand. "Don’t go. Don’t leave."

"You have a fever. I have to go out and find Silver Leaf Grass for you."

Bai Wanwan couldn’t hear what he was saying at all. Trapped in a nightmare, she just clung to him, spouting nonsense.

He tried to pull his hand away, surprised by the strength of the seemingly small, slender female.

He tugged once but failed to break free.

"Let go. I’ll be back as fast as I can."

Even though he knew she probably couldn’t hear him, he patiently finished speaking before slowly prying her fingers open.

Bai Wanwan was still lying on the ground, murmuring softly.

But Jin Yi didn’t look back, striding quickly toward the cave entrance.

The faster he went and returned, the safer the female would be.

He carefully moved a few stones, slipped out of the opening, and then quickly sealed it again.

The night wind, carrying a damp chill, hit him in the face. Jin Yi’s pupils dilated to their widest to adjust to the darkness.

He perked up his ears, catching every sound in the forest.

Silver Leaf Grass grew all over the forest, but the darkness of night would impair his vision.

He moved slowly and carefully through the forest, making every footstep as light as possible.

After searching back and forth for a long time, he finally spotted it at the base of a rock face.

A few clumps of silvery-white leaves shimmered faintly in the moonlight.

Jin Yi approached with agility and quickly plucked the Silver Leaf Grass.

With the Silver Leaf Grass in hand, Jin Yi didn’t dare to delay for a second.

He was already a considerable distance from the cave where they were hiding.

He turned around quickly. The figure of a Golden Lion darted through the dark forest, returning to the cave entrance at top speed.

Seeing the entrance was still sealed and intact, Jin Yi breathed a small sigh of relief.

He shifted back into his human form, removed the stones from the entrance, and slipped inside.

After sealing the entrance again, Jin Yi strode over to Bai Wanwan’s side.

By now, Bai Wanwan’s condition was even worse. Her body was scorching hot, and though she had finally fallen silent, she had lost consciousness completely.

Jin Yi immediately crushed the Silver Leaf Grass and squeezed out its juice. He lifted Bai Wanwan’s head, trying to get her to drink the medicine, but her jaw was clenched tight, and the juice trickled down the corner of her mouth.

Jin Yi had no choice but to call out to her. "Bai Wanwan... Open your mouth. Drink the Silver Leaf Grass juice. You’ll feel better."

But Bai Wanwan didn’t listen at all, biting her lip and stubbornly refusing to open her mouth.

After struggling for a long time without managing to get much of the juice into her, a flash of frustration appeared in Jin Yi’s eyes.

He tossed the Silver Leaf Grass into his own mouth, chewed it a few times, then lowered his head to press his lips against hers, forcefully prying her lips and teeth apart.

Finally, her teeth loosened, and Jin Yi passed the medicinal juice into her mouth.

The Clan Witch had said a full bowl of Silver Leaf Grass juice was needed for the fever to break quickly.

He picked up all the Silver Leaf Grass and continued to chew it and feed it to her.

Jin Yi breathed a sigh of relief only after the very last leaf was gone.

He wasn’t thinking of anything else; he just wanted the female to get better quickly.

Just as he was about to pull his lips away, Bai Wanwan suddenly raised her arms, wrapped them around his neck, and began to kiss him back.

Jin Yi froze. A strange sensation shot through his body like an electric current.

He had pressed his lips to hers countless times while feeding her the medicine just now, but the sensation suddenly felt incredibly distinct.

The female’s lips were a hundred times softer than he had imagined, carrying a dry warmth unique to a high fever.

But he quickly came to his senses and pulled the female away from him.

"Bai Wanwan..."

Before he could finish, he saw Bai Wanwan go limp and slide down against the wall.

He quickly shot out an arm to support her, preventing her from collapsing onto the hard ground.

Bai Wanwan’s breathing was heavy. She seemed completely unaware of what she had just done.

Jin Yi took a shallow breath, closed his eyes for a moment, and laid her down again.

The cave was narrow. Even though he had deliberately put some distance between them, he couldn’t ignore the female’s presence beside him.

He forced himself to close his eyes again.

As he was drifting off, the female rolled over next to him.

"Bai Wanwan, move over a little."

"Cold..."

Bai Wanwan unconsciously snuggled closer to the source of warmth.

Jin Yi looked at the female pressing against him and subconsciously started to push her away.

But his hand was already on her arm, and in the end, he didn’t apply any force.

He didn’t make any other move, simply letting her lie there pressed against his side.

Perhaps because there was a source of warmth beside her, the ailing Bai Wanwan gradually began to feel more comfortable and finally fell into a sound sleep.

Jin Yi, however, tossed and turned in a state of half-sleep for the entire night...
