Chapter 39: The Novice Buffer Has Ended
"I will, Sensei," Leo managed, and gave her a small respectful nod. "Thank you."
She smiled and gave his forearm one gentle pat before she carried her saucer over to the cleaning bay as he stood there for a second after she’d gone with the warm ghost of her fingers still on his sleeve.
’So nice...’
At the other end of the island, Elena stood by the auxiliary counter.
She had eaten an entire plate of potatoes and tomatoes daintily, with textbook boarding-school etiquette and immaculate posture, fork and knife in perfect alignment... and she had cleared every last speck of sauce off the ceramic.
Leo walked past her to grab a clean cloth from the pantry.
As he crossed her path, she hesitated with her fingers tightening on the edge of her empty plate.
’He went into the Rift for my crystal,’ her mind whispered as a fierce chaotic warmth surged up into her throat. ’He didn’t even hesitate. He held this ship between two crashing mountains of iron so I could build my harpoon. He told me I was an engineer... He looked at my room and he didn’t laugh...’
She parted her lips and lifted her icy eyes to his.
Her breath caught, and her chin dipped a centimeter as she got ready to say it.
The real honest unvarnished words that had been burning in her chest for six hours.
"Leo..." she started with no frost in it at all.
He stopped and turned his head with an open curious look. "Yeah, Elena?"
She looked into his dark eyes.
And the raw terrifying vulnerability of it hit her like a bucket of ice water.
The proud stubborn Sterling blood in her veins revolted, screaming that an heiress does not bow her head to a stray, that admitting gratitude was total surrender.
The blush hit her cheeks like an electric shock.
Her jaw locked shut.
Her spine snapped back into rigid steel and her chin jerked up to a furious forty-five degrees as she shoved her empty plate into his hands!
"The... the gravel in Camila’s beds has a high silicate content," she stammered haughtily, her voice jumping as she turned her face away. "You should clean the filtration intake before it clogs the auxiliary graywater pump... Do not stand there staring at me like a farmhand."
Leo looked down at the empty plate in his hands, then up at her bright red ears, and let out a dry chuckle.
"Right, Silicate content. I’ll get right on that, Princess."
Elena let out a sharp offended huff and stomped around to the far side of the island with her arms crossed tight over her chest, her boots clacking furiously.
Harper caught the tail end of it and snorted into her cup.
"Man, Sterling, you really know how to charm a guy. Remind me never to ask you for a compliment."
Elena glared daggers across the counter... but as she leaned back against it, her fingers crept up and tugged self-consciously at the high collar of her flight jacket.
A sharp theatrical scowl crossed her face as she wrinkled her nose and sniffed her own sleeve with visible aristocratic disgust.
"This is intolerable," she announced loudly, throwing her hands in the air. "We are supposed to be the surviving vanguard of human civilization, and we smell like a municipal sewer facility!"
The table stopped and stared at her.
"What are you complaining about now, Elena?" Camila blinked.
"Us!" Elena’s icy eyes swept the six faces around the island. "Look at us! Bell has hydraulic grease smeared across her cheekbone! Camila has dirt in her hairline! The Master Captain smells like fried scallions and burnt insulation! And I..."
Her voice cracked with pure agonizing tragedy as she gestured down at her wrinkled white uniform.
"...I do not even possess my roll-on deodorant! Do you realize what that means?! I am an heiress, and I am currently emitting the olfactory signature of a common dockworker after a fourteen-hour shift! The scrubbers can only do so much! We are marinating in our own perspiration!"
Harper burst into a loud delighted laugh and dropped her head back against the cabinets.
"Oh, boo-hoo! The princess doesn’t have her fancy French lavender roll-on! What a tragedy! The universe is truly ending!"
"It was not French lavender, Bell, it was cold-pressed Bergamot with osmium-dampened scent locks!" Elena shrieked, her face blazing crimson. "...It cost four hundred dollars a bottle!"
Leo leaned back against the prep counter, crossed his arms and smirked.
"Well, Sterling," He drawled, sounding as dry as dust, "if you’re that worried about your delicate aristocratic nose, I’m sure the AI can vent the cargo bay for thirty seconds... The vacuum of space is odorless and very fresh with zero percent perspiration."
"You would LOVE that, wouldn’t you, stray?!" Elena jabbed a finger at his nose. "Venting me out the airlock to save forty dollars of life support! Well, I refuse! I will endure your terrible cooking and your greasy shirts, but I demand that the Foundry synthesize basic toiletries before I am forced to smell Bell’s combat boots for another cycle..."
"Hey! My boots smell like VICTORY, you snob!" Harper yelled, waving her fork.
"Wrong, they smell like a corpse that gave up on life!"
The kitchen exploded into one big rolling wave of laughter.
Camila was giggling so hard she had to wipe her eyes with a napkin.
Jin-Ah had a hand clamped over her mouth with her shoulders trembling.
Chloe let out a soft melodic laugh from her corner like tiny silver bells, and Harper was howling with tears streaming down her freckles.
Leo stood by the coffee dispenser with his warm mug cradled in both hands and just watched them for a while, not saying anything.
The laughter washed over the steel counters and chased away the cold shadow of the dead rocks outside.
The galley smelled like fried potatoes and fresh tomatoes, and the noisy banter bounced off the bulkheads like a family bickering over Sunday dinner.
’It almost feels normal...’ he thought, a deep quiet warmth settling behind his breastbone.
For the first time since the white light tore them out of Room 402, the terror of the void felt far away.
They had food... They had air... They had a ship that could fight, and they had each other...
For five fleeting precious minutes, they were just seven young people sitting around a kitchen island, laughing at each other’s bad habits.
Then...
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ... CHIME!
The warmth shattered in an instant.
A harsh metallic klaxon blared out of the overhead grille and the amber lights dropped into a stark strobing crimson!
WEE-WOO! WEE-WOO! WEE-WOO!
The laughter died in seven throats at once.
Camila’s fork clattered to the floor.
Harper snapped from slouching amusement straight into a combat crouch with her hand dropping to the holster on her hip with her plate of potatoes forgotten and sliding off the counter.
CRASH!
Elena’s haughty face dissolved into frozen shock, and Chloe’s green eyes darkened with an instant ring of scarlet.
"Bridge!" Leo barked, slamming his mug onto the counter as he bolted for the corridor. "MOVE!"
The seven of them sprinted down the transit spine past the garden and the sealed rooms with the red strobes chasing them down the corridor and their boots pounding the runners in one frantic thundering rhythm.
THUD-THUD-THUD-THUD-THUD!
They burst through the hatch onto the bridge and the canopy was drowning in blinding violent red light.
Overriding the flight data, the sector maps and the star charts was a single massive blood-red notification five meters across, its border pulsing like an open bleeding wound.
[SECTOR DAMPENING FIELD HAS BEEN TERMINATED]
[LOCAL NOVICE BUFFER: EXPIRED (00:00:00)]
The silence was deafening, louder than the klaxon had been. The red strobes painted their faces in blood and shadow and lit up six pairs of wide terrified eyes behind the command dais.
The AI cleared its channel.
There was no dry mockery in its voice this time.
[The localized survival dampening field has dissolved. Level 1 limits have been officially purged from sector parameters... Advanced biological mass, void-warp entities and apex predators across this orbital cluster have regained unrestricted hunting autonomy.]
A cold terrible pause hung in the freezing air.
[The tutorial is over, Master Captain. From now on, the void plays for keeps...]
The crimson warning didn’t fade gently.
It lingered across the canopy, washing the consoles dull red and staining the edges of the starfield like a wound that wouldn’t close.
The smell of fried potatoes and crushed basil still hung in the recycled air, but it felt far away now, like a dream from another life that had been cut off the second the counter hit zero.
"Sensors," Leo said flatly as he dropped into the command throne.
He drove both hands down into the crystal cradles.
PZZT!
The link punched cold and clean into the base of his skull, a familiar icy sting, and wiped away the last warmth of the kitchen, locking his nervous system straight into the iron bones of the Wanderer-7.
The core was humming at a perfect one hundred percent beneath him, steady and strong in the back of his skull... but the void outside felt different now.
The invisible ceiling that had been holding the horrors of deep space back was gone, and the hull was bare to whatever was really out there in the dark.
At starboard console one, Ms. Tachibana hadn’t sat down.
She stood braced over the astrogation table with her palms flat on the edges of the projection well and her knuckles going white.
The silver rings of her talent weren’t pulsing in neat intervals anymore, they were blowing outward in violent jagged ripples that warped the local grid.
’Something displaced the gravity well three hundred kilometers out,’ she thought as a cold spike of dread shot straight down her spine. ’Not an asteroid... An asteroid has mass, but it does not accelerate against the solar drift. This thing is carving through the gravitational folds... and it is eating the background radiation.’
"Sensei," Leo said, his eyes scanning the empty forward view. "What do you have?"
"Long range," she whispered. "Bearing zero-four-seven mark twelve... Something just entered the sector from the dark side of the belt. It is massive, Leo. Enormous as it’s warping the local field."
Leo swept the forward array across the coordinates. "No thermal bloom... Radar’s blank."
"Optical scanners are returning dead black," Jin-Ah reported from station three, her fingers blurring as she routed spare power to the forward arrays.
’Zero reflectivity,’ she calculated as a cold bead of sweat crawled down the side of her neck. ’Albedo zero point zero zero one... The light from the stars behind it is simply disappearing. It is not cloaked by technology... its skin is swallowing photons. Nothing in any terrestrial database has an absorption spectrum this absolute.’
"Look at the stars," Ms. Tachibana said, her trembling finger pointing through the canopy. "Watch the stars, not the screen."
Leo leaned forward in the throne and narrowed his eyes against the black.
Two hundred kilometers out, against a glittering violet nebula, a patch of the universe was dying.
A massive triangular silhouette was sliding across the stars and blotting them out one by one, like a black hand moving across a field of diamonds.
It was enormous and next to it the Wanderer-7 was a needle.
Nobody on the bridge said a word.
Camila’s hand had found Harper’s sleeve and was clutching it so hard the fabric twisted, and Harper didn’t even notice.
Chloe had gone perfectly still on the back bench, the way a small animal goes still in tall grass when something big walks past.
’That’s not a bug,’ Leo thought, his mouth gone bone dry. ’That’s not a worm. That’s a whale! That’s a goddamn whale with teeth...’
A flat diamond-shaped body with a wingspan of nearly a hundred and fifty meters, trailing a long hair-thin tail that whipped through the vacuum in slow undulating waves.
Its skin drank the starlight, leaving nothing behind but a hole in reality.
CHIME!
The master interface flickered violently and threw a stark blood-red block straight across the glass.
[THREAT IDENTIFIED: VOID ENTITY]
[Classification: Shroud Ray]
[Threat Level: Level 2 (Apex Pelagic Specimen)]
[Biological Parameters: Wingspan ~150 Meters / Light-Absorbing Epidermal Chitin]
[Special Capabilities: High-Output Bioelectric Capacitance / Void-Glide Propulsion / Constriction Predation]
[Tactical Warning: Hostile is an active Level 2 apex hunter. Speed, intelligence and kinetic durability exceed Level 1 baseline by an estimated 600%.]
The AI didn’t chime its usual mocking chime.
[This unit confirms that the local sector is no longer suppressing apex predators... The entity designated Shroud Ray has locked onto the electromagnetic emissions of our Micro-Fusion Core.]
Behind him, someone’s breath hitched but he didn’t turn around to see who.
A tiny terrible half-second of silence.
[On the bright side, the Master Captain will no longer need to worry about long-term agricultural planning... We have approximately forty seconds before we are digested.]
