Chapter 1702: The Silent Barracks
Chapter 1702: The Silent Barracks
There wasn’t a single person in the group who said they wouldn’t come with Raze. In a lot of ways, this collective decision just cemented their relationship. They didn’t have to come; they were under no obligation to follow him, just as they hadn’t been obligated to leave Pagna to follow him into this life either. Yet, here they were. Raze looked at them and felt a familiar weight. During this life, a life he never truly wanted to lead, he now had people he wanted to protect again. But he had to wonder: at what cost? To complete his revenge, he was simply too close now. He was too close to the end to give it up, and now that the Grand Magus had shown their true colors, the fallout was affecting everyone he cared about.
The group moved with a grim focus, quickly reaching the Underside. They continued through the damp tunnels with Raze at the front, leading the way. Behind him, the others were twitching, their hands on their weapons, ready to take out anyone they saw at a moment’s notice. The air in the tunnels was heavy, but the path ahead was eerily quiet.
"I expected there to be more people, or at least more guards on the way to the main barracks," Kelly commented, her voice a low whisper that echoed off the stone walls.
"There were guards," Raze answered without looking back. "But I got rid of them all on my way through. When we get to the surface, we need to all be as quick and as silent as possible. We cannot afford to make a scene. Use your strength and use every skill you have to take them out instantly. I know you guys can do it."
Eventually, they reached the exit location Raze had scouted. He led them through a drainage pipe that opened up into the back of a toilet area within the Noble Guild’s barracks. Raze was the first to break out from the top, stepping onto the tiled floor. The rest followed him in silence. Raze paused for a moment, waiting, but since his alarm spells hadn’t activated, it meant they were still in the clear. Nobody knew they were there.
"I guess I should start using this sword properly. That’s how she got around so effectively," B said as she pulled out the translucent blade. She gave it a quick test swing, the metal nearly invisible in the dim light. "I’ll take out everyone I see with no noise, don’t worry about me."
The plan was simple but brutal. Alen, Londo, and Kelly were tasked with taking out the lower-ranked staff members. These targets were easy to spot due to the specific color of the robes they wore. Their job was to stay on the bottom floor, acting as a sweep team to stop anyone from escaping or finding out what was happening on the floors above.
As they moved out of the room and into the main hallway, they immediately spotted a group of mages moving toward the mess hall. Raze didn’t hesitate. He zapped across the floor in a blur of movement, placing his hand against the lead mage’s chest and casting a burst of Dark Magic that stopped the man’s heart instantly.
Liam was right behind him, using his All-Cutting Sword to slice through the air. In two clean strokes, he took off the heads of the other two mages before they could even draw their staves. B followed up, using the translucent sword paired with her Qi to deal with a guard coming around the corner, her movements fluid and silent.
"You guys go up ahead and handle the higher-ups," Alen said, signaling to Londo and Kelly to fan out. "We can do this. We’re not that weak."
Throughout the entire barracks, members of the Noble Guild were being systematically killed one by one. The infiltration was turning into a slaughter. Liam was proving to be the most useful in the narrow hallways with his All-Cutting Sword. As long as he approached them silently, he could always kill his targets in one hit, bypassing their magical defenses entirely. His system was what allowed him to set things up perfectly, providing him with the spatial awareness to ensure he wouldn’t be caught off guard.
However, Liam found himself wanting to rely on the system’s assistance less and less. Things were different now; they were in a war of attrition where they had to take out as many enemies as they possibly could. They continued to move through the halls, clearing room after room. Down on the ground floor, Alen’s group was encountering a bit of resistance, but the fighting was limited. They were able to break through the lower-ranked staff members with ease, getting rid of everyone in their path.
The entire barracks was falling. It was a stark demonstration of the difference in power levels between Raze’s group and the average Noble Guild mage, especially when the mages couldn’t use their superior numbers to their advantage. Without the ability to group up and cast large-scale spells, the mages were being picked apart in close quarters.
Finally, Raze and Liam reached the top floor, which appeared to be the main office of the commander. Before entering, Raze had given the shifting mask over to Kelly. He thought her group could use it best to get rid of a few more people by surprise while they held the ground floor. Raze knew he needed to spread his powerful items and his influence as much as possible to ensure the mission’s success.
Raze kicked the door open and stepped in, followed closely by Liam. Liam didn’t waste a second; he went straight for the high-ranking mage sitting behind the desk. The commander tried to activate a defensive spell, but Liam swung his sword down with a burst of Qi. The blade broke right through the magical barrier the commander’s robes provided as if it were paper. The sword sliced clean through the commander’s arm before Liam pressed the cold edge of the blade right against the man’s neck.
The commander gasped, clutching the stump of his arm as blood began to soak into his expensive robes. He looked up at the intruders with wide, terrified eyes.
"I think you can guess who we are," Raze said as he walked further into the room, the shadows seemingly clinging to his coat.
"The Dark Magus..." the commander choked out, his face pale from shock and pain. "But how... how did you get in? How did no one notice you?"
"Right now, every single person in this barracks that serves under the Noble Guild no longer exists," Raze answered coldly. He leaned over the desk, his eyes glowing with a faint, dark light. "The enemy you are facing is a lot more dangerous than you could ever imagine. There is a reason why I... no, why we were able to take out the Grand Magus before, and we will do the same now."
Raze watched the commander tremble. "But you have a chance to live. I will stop the bleeding and spare your life, as long as you answer some of my questions truthfully, Commander."
