Chapter 1700: The Silent Purge
Chapter 1700: The Silent Purge
While moving through the Underpass, Raze was making full use of the tricks provided by his mask, as well as his own specialized skills to reach whichever position he needed to be in. After killing the first two mages right by the obvious entrance to the tunnels, he didn’t hesitate. He changed his face again, shifting his features into a new disguise as he walked calmly through the damp, dimly lit area.
There was a large amount of mages currently stationed in the Underpass. Between the main tunnels where they were currently camped and the far side of the river, Raze estimated there were at least one hundred of them. By the time he was done with his work here, he wanted that number to be down to zero.
Even for someone of his caliber, dealing with a hundred mages at once was a risk. If he caused too much of a scene or allowed a problem to escalate to the point where it was clear a fight was going on, the entire force would rush toward his position. Raze had no real issue with the idea of fighting a hundred mages, he had just performed a similar feat on the surface during the assessments, but the problem was catching the attention of the entire Noble Guild at once. If the commanders above realized what was happening, his mission would be over. It was best for him to continue doing things exactly as he had been.
He walked toward one of the houses where he could see members of the Noble Guild gathered. As he stepped inside the structure, his footsteps were completely silent, a result of a magic spell he had cast to dampen any sound. Taking out his sword, Raze covered the blade in Dark Magic. He used his Qi to kick forward with explosive speed, the dark-cloaked steel stabbing one mage right through the chest.
Before the man’s body could even hit the floor, Raze quickly pulled the blade out and spun, slicing the head off the second mage in the room. After killing the two of them quickly and silently like a professional assassin, he didn’t leave the evidence behind. He used his Dark Magic to disintegrate the bodies, ensuring no one would stumble upon them and sound the alarm.
’Learning some of the Demonic arts really helped with my footwork,’ Raze thought as he moved deeper into the house. ’Combining those movements with the silence spell and wind magic almost makes this a perfect situation for an infiltration.’
A small part of him felt a strange sense of guilt because of how easy it was to take these lives, but he knew this wasn’t the time to worry about morals. Searching the rest of the house, he made his way up to the roof. In this situation, he needed to clear the high ground. He placed his hand flat on the floorboards, sending out a pulse of lightning. The electricity scattered across the roof until it reached the guards stationed there, shocking their entire bodies and paralyzing them instantly.
The lightning was starting to take on more physical traits as he mastered it. After the mages were stunned, Raze manipulated the energy like a whip, snagging their legs and dragging them back through the roof access into the house. Once they were back inside and out of sight, he finished the two of them off.
Getting rid of the mages on the rooftops was the hardest part of the purge due to how many others were on adjacent roofs looking around. When Raze had finally finished hiding the bodies from above, he turned around and headed back down to the ground floor. That was when his ears picked up the sound of two people approaching and talking.
"Huh, where are the other two?" one voice asked, sounding confused. "Shouldn’t they have been on duty right here? Where did they go?"
"Relax," the second voice replied with a yawn. "There are like a hundred people down here. If someone actually tries to come through the tunnels, of course we’ll spot them. They probably just stepped away for a second."
There was one more thing that was working heavily in Raze’s favor. Although there was a plentiful amount of guards, nearly all of them were looking in one specific direction. They were focused on the North side of the underground because that was where they expected any potential attack to come from. They never expected the threat to already be behind them.
Raze used this oversight to his advantage. Before the two mages who had just entered the room could even register his presence, a sword sliced through the air. The blade moved so fast that it took both of their heads in a single, clean motion.
Raze continued this methodical process throughout the entirety of the Underside. He was clearing the area district by district. As he progressed, it became even easier for him to move because he no longer had to worry about particular angles or guards overlooking certain directions.
With the numbers thinning, Raze started to move much quicker. He even started to just run through certain sections of the district. He leapt into the air, slicing one mage’s head off as he passed, then took a step and blasted a Dark Pulse from his hand. The energy hit another mage right through the stomach, the force causing them to collapse silently onto the ground.
The whole of the Underside was connected, but there were large tunnels that would eventually lead to big open areas that looked almost like massive caverns. This was the main area Raze needed to focus on to ensure the path was clear.
Now that he had reached the far side of the Underside, where he guessed the rest of the guild forces were stationed above him, there was only one thing he needed to do to finish the job.
"Alert! Alert! There is an intruder in the Underside!" Raze shouted. He used his wind magic to enhance the volume of his voice, making it echo through the tunnels, but he did it in a way that sounded like a panicked guard.
He could see five more mages immediately coming out from hidden areas he hadn’t fully scouted yet. From his current position, he dealt with them with ruthless efficiency. He took out one with a well-aimed lightning bolt and two more with rapid Dark Pulses. Before the last two could react, he ventured over and killed them on the spot with his sword.
Raze looked around the now-quiet cavern, the air heavy with the smell of ozone and dark magic.
"The Underside has been cleared," Raze said quietly to himself. "Now it’s time to get the others and start our real attack."
