C51 - The Forest at Dawn

Dawn came without sunlight.

A pale grayness slowly replaced the darkness beneath the Emerald Spirit Forest's canopy. Mist gathered close to the ground, drifting between the roots and stones like thin smoke.

Ye Chen opened his eyes.

For several moments, he remained still.

The forest was quiet.

Too quiet.

He listened carefully.

No footsteps.

No human voices.

Only the distant call of an unknown bird.

Beside him, Lin Xu stirred.

"Morning already?"

"Yes."

Lin Xu sat up and rubbed his eyes.

"Did you sleep?"

"Enough."

Ye Chen rose and stretched his limbs.

The previous night's pursuit had left both of them exhausted, but neither had suffered an injury.

That alone was fortunate.

Ye Chen stepped out from beneath the roots and examined their surroundings.

The ground was damp from the night's moisture.

Small tracks crossed the mud.

Most belonged to ordinary animals.

One set was different.

Deep.

He crouched.

"Something large passed through here."

"How large?"

"Large enough that we shouldn't follow it."

They packed their belongings.

Before leaving, Ye Chen looked back at their temporary shelter.

Nothing remained except flattened grass.

They had left no fire.

They began moving east.

"Probably."

He looked around.

Ye Chen examined the third marker.

"Maybe."

"Someone placed these here intentionally."

"Of course."

Ye Chen shook his head.

"Look at the spacing."

The markers were not randomly scattered.

They formed a rough triangle.

And all three pointed toward the same direction.

Lin Xu's expression changed.

"You think they're leading somewhere?"

Ye Chen nodded.

"Possibly."

They followed the direction indicated by the markers.

The forest became denser.

The ground gradually rose.

After another hour, they reached a small stone clearing.

At its center stood a broken pillar covered in moss.

A bronze symbol was carved into its surface.

Ye Chen approached.

The moment his hand touched the stone, the jade token at his waist briefly glowed.

A faint line of text appeared across its surface.

Hidden Mission Discovered.

Lin Xu stared.

"We found one."

Ye Chen looked around.

No immediate danger.

No hidden mechanism.

Only the ruined pillar.

A second message appeared.

Retrieve the Spirit Spring Water from the eastern ravine.

Reward: Ten Trial Points.

Lin Xu grinned.

"Now that's worth something."

Ye Chen nodded.

Ten points were significant.

But the mission description had one obvious problem.

The eastern ravine.

They had no idea what guarded it.

Lin Xu looked at him.

"Still want to do it?"

Ye Chen glanced toward the east.

"No."

Lin Xu blinked.

"No?"

"We don't know what's there."

"So we abandon ten points?"

Ye Chen smiled.

"Not yet."

He examined the pillar again.

There was a faint carving at its base.

A simple map.

The eastern ravine.

A narrow path.

And a symbol resembling a claw.

Lin Xu's expression became serious.

"Spirit beast?"

"Most likely."

Ye Chen memorized the map.

"We'll investigate first."

They followed the marked route.

The terrain gradually became steeper.

Trees grew farther apart.

The sound of rushing water became audible.

Then they smelled blood.

Ye Chen stopped immediately.

Lin Xu's hand moved to his sword.

Ahead, beside a cluster of rocks, lay the body of a spirit beast.

Its throat had been torn open.

The wounds were fresh.

Ye Chen crouched beside it.

"Not long ago."

Lin Xu looked around.

"Who killed it?"

Ye Chen examined the wounds.

"Something stronger."

A low growl suddenly came from above.

Both men looked up.

A pair of yellow eyes stared down from a tree.

A dark shape crouched upon the branch.

It was a large catlike spirit beast.

Its claws dug into the bark.

Its body was covered in gray fur marked with black stripes.

Lin Xu whispered,

"Cloud Leopard."

Ye Chen nodded.

Second-grade.

Fast.

Extremely agile.

And known for attacking from above.

The creature lowered its head.

Its eyes moved between them.

Ye Chen slowly stepped backward.

The leopard's muscles tightened.

He understood immediately.

"Run."

The beast leapt.

Ye Chen and Lin Xu separated.

The leopard crashed between them, claws tearing through the earth.

It spun instantly.

Too fast.

Ye Chen barely raised his sword in time.

Claws struck the blade.

The force drove him backward several steps.

His arms went numb.

Lin Xu attacked from behind.

The leopard twisted.

Its tail struck Lin Xu across the chest.

He flew backward and crashed into a tree.

"Lin Xu!"

"I'm fine!"

The leopard turned toward him.

Ye Chen saw the opening.

He charged.

The beast reacted.

Its body blurred.

Ye Chen's sword missed by inches.

A claw flashed toward his face.

He leaned backward.

The claw passed over his forehead.

A thin line of blood appeared.

Ye Chen's eyes sharpened.

Fast.

Very fast.

Faster than the boar.

He couldn't match it directly.

Then he remembered the forest.

The terrain.

The rocks.

The narrow ravine.

The leopard's greatest advantage was speed.

So he needed to take away its space.

"Lin Xu!"

"Yes!"

"Drive it toward the rocks!"

Lin Xu understood.

They moved together.

Instead of attacking the leopard directly, they forced it backward.

Every time it tried to escape left, Ye Chen blocked the path.

Every time it moved right, Lin Xu intercepted.

The leopard became increasingly aggressive.

It lunged.

Ye Chen sidestepped.

Its claws struck a rock.

For a brief moment, its movement slowed.

That was enough.

Lin Xu's sword struck its flank.

The leopard roared.

Ye Chen stepped forward.

One precise thrust.

The blade pierced beneath its jaw.

The beast collapsed.

Silence returned.

Lin Xu leaned against the rock, breathing heavily.

"That's two."

Ye Chen wiped the blood from his forehead.

"Two."

He looked toward the ravine.

The hidden mission remained incomplete.

But now they knew something important.

The Spirit Spring was guarded.

And judging by the strength of the Cloud Leopard...

whatever lay deeper inside might be considerably more dangerous.

Ye Chen looked at Lin Xu.

"Rest first."

Lin Xu nodded.

Neither rushed toward the reward.

They had learned that lesson already.

In the Emerald Spirit Forest, opportunity and danger often walked the same path.

And sometimes...

the greatest mistake a cultivator could make was reaching for the reward before understanding the price.
