Dao Eternal
C48 - The Gates of the Emerald Spirit Forest
The Bronze Bell rang before sunrise.
Dong!
The sound rolled across Azure Cloud Mountain, passing through the outer disciple courtyards and echoing between the distant peaks.
Dong!
Windows opened.
Doors slid aside.
Hundreds of disciples stepped into the cold morning air.
Dong!
The third strike faded into the mountains.
The Outer Court Trial had begun.
Ye Chen opened his eyes.
For several breaths, he remained perfectly still.
Then he rose.
There was no hesitation.
His prepared travel clothes were already waiting beside the bed. He dressed, fastened his sword around his waist, and lifted the travel bag he had inspected countless times during the previous week.
It felt slightly heavier than usual.
Not because of its contents.
Because today, everything inside it mattered.
He stepped outside.
The outer courtyard was already crowded.
Disciples moved toward the central assembly ground from every direction. Some carried swords. Others carried spears, bows, or heavy blades. Several had clearly spent considerable resources preparing for the trial.
Excitement and nervousness filled the air.
Ye Chen walked through the crowd quietly.
He noticed familiar faces.
Some disciples looked confident.
Others were pale.
A few were already gathering into groups.
Lin Xu appeared beside him.
"You slept?"
"Enough."
Lin Xu smiled.
"That's more than I managed."
Before Ye Chen could answer, a powerful voice spread across the courtyard.
"All participants, assemble!"
The crowd immediately became orderly.
At the front of the square stood Elder Mo.
Behind him were several other elders and sect instructors.
On a raised platform beside them stood a large stone table.
Hundreds of jade tokens had been arranged upon it.
Elder Mo waited until everyone had gathered.
His gaze passed across the disciples.
"Today, you will enter the Emerald Spirit Forest."
No one spoke.
"The trial will last seven days."
He raised a jade token.
"Each participant will receive one identity token. Your token will record your contribution points and confirm your survival."
A murmur passed through the crowd.
Elder Mo continued.
"The forest has been divided into several regions."
"Some contain ordinary spirit beasts."
"Some contain more dangerous creatures."
"Several locations contain hidden mission markers."
"Your objective is simple."
"Survive."
He paused.
"Earn points."
"And return to the designated gathering area before the trial ends."
An elder beside him stepped forward and began explaining the scoring system.
Spirit beast tokens.
Mission markers.
Spirit herbs.
Rescue points.
Special discoveries.
Every action could affect a disciple's final score.
But there was one rule Elder Mo emphasized above all others.
"Do not leave the designated trial region."
His voice became stern.
"Beyond the marked boundaries lie areas the elders have not secured."
"Entering them will result in immediate disqualification."
The disciples nodded seriously.
Then came the final warning.
"Your fellow disciples are not automatically your enemies."
Elder Mo looked across the crowd.
"But neither are they automatically your friends."
The words caused several expressions to change.
"Trust carefully."
"Cooperate when cooperation benefits both sides."
"Withdraw when a situation becomes unreasonable."
"And remember..."
His eyes hardened.
"The elders will judge your actions."
A silence followed.
Then Elder Mo raised his hand.
"Take your tokens."
One by one, the disciples stepped forward.
When Ye Chen reached the stone table, he received a simple green jade token.
The moment his fingers touched it, a faint warmth passed through his palm.
His name appeared upon its surface.
Ye Chen.
Below it was a number representing his starting score.
Zero.
Nothing more.
He attached the token securely to his belt.
Lin Xu received his own shortly afterward.
The two stood together at the edge of the gathering.
Beyond the sect walls, the mountains waited.
Then the great gates opened.
A deep rumbling sound rolled across the courtyard.
The massive wooden doors slowly separated.
Cold mountain air rushed inward.
Beyond the gates, the road descended toward the distant forest.
Hundreds of disciples began moving.
At first, they traveled together.
Then the groups gradually separated.
Some hurried ahead.
Others remained behind.
A few immediately moved toward predetermined routes.
Ye Chen did not rush.
He watched the disciples disappear along the mountain road.
Lin Xu walked beside him.
"Which direction?"
Ye Chen looked toward the forest.
"The eastern route."
"Why?"
"Water."
Lin Xu smiled.
"You really did study."
They began walking.
The road gradually became narrower.
The sounds of the sect faded behind them.
Soon, only footsteps remained.
Then even those became muffled beneath the forest floor.
The first trees appeared around midday.
They were enormous.
Their trunks were wider than houses, their branches forming a dense canopy overhead.
The sunlight immediately became dimmer.
Ye Chen stopped at the edge of the forest.
He looked down.
Fresh tracks crossed the soil.
Four-legged.
Large.
Recent.
He crouched.
Lin Xu noticed.
"Spirit beast?"
Ye Chen nodded.
"Probably."
"Which one?"
Ye Chen examined the impressions carefully.
"Can't tell yet."
He stood.
"Then we don't follow the tracks."
Lin Xu agreed.
They entered the forest along a different route.
The moment they crossed beneath the canopy, the atmosphere changed.
The outside world disappeared.
Birdsong became distant.
The air was damp.
Every sound seemed louder.
Every shadow seemed deeper.
Ye Chen slowed his steps.
He remembered the first lesson from the library.
Unusual silence could indicate danger.
The second.
Broken branches could reveal movement.
The third.
Never assume a peaceful environment was actually safe.
He raised one hand.
Lin Xu stopped immediately.
Ahead, several branches had been snapped.
The leaves around them were disturbed.
Something had passed through recently.
Ye Chen looked around.
No movement.
No sound.
He waited.
Nothing.
After several breaths, he lowered his hand.
"Let's go around."
They changed direction.
Neither asked what might have been waiting ahead.
They didn't need to know.
Survival sometimes meant refusing to discover an answer.
Several hours passed.
The forest gradually became darker.
They eventually found a narrow stream.
The water was clear.
But Ye Chen didn't drink immediately.
He examined the surrounding vegetation.
Then he checked upstream.
No dead animals.
No unusual discoloration.
No strange smell.
Only then did he fill his waterskin.
Lin Xu watched him.
"You check everything."
"That's the point."
"Of what?"
Ye Chen looked into the forest.
"Staying alive."
A distant roar suddenly echoed through the trees.
Both men froze.
The sound was deep enough to shake leaves from the branches.
Birds exploded from the canopy.
Lin Xu's hand moved toward his sword.
Ye Chen remained still.
The roar came again.
Closer.
This time, they heard something else.
Branches breaking.
Heavy footsteps.
Something large was moving through the forest.
Ye Chen looked toward the direction of the sound.
His fingers tightened around his sword.
The trial had only begun.
And already, the Emerald Spirit Forest had reminded them of one simple truth.
The rules belonged to the sect.
But the forest belonged to itself.
