C37 - The Bronze Bell

  • Next Chapter

The first light of dawn had only just begun to spill over the distant mountain peaks when Azure Cloud Mountain awakened.

A veil of silver mist drifted lazily through the ancient pines, winding its way along stone staircases that had endured countless generations of disciples. Dew clung to every blade of grass, reflecting the pale morning light like scattered pearls. The mountain seemed alive, yet peaceful, breathing with a rhythm that had remained unchanged for centuries.

The training grounds were already occupied.

Outer disciples moved with disciplined purpose. Some sat beneath towering cedar trees in quiet meditation, their breathing slow and even as they absorbed the world's spiritual energy. Others practiced sword forms in neat rows, the soft whistle of wooden blades cutting through the cool morning air. A group of younger disciples carried heavy buckets of water uphill, their expressions weary but determined, while a few senior disciples corrected stances with patient but uncompromising precision.

Every action was familiar.

Every movement belonged to the routine of sect life.

At the eastern edge of the training grounds, Ye Chen stood alone.

The simple practice sword in his hand rose and fell in measured arcs. There was nothing extraordinary about the technique. It was the most basic sword form taught to every new disciple, so ordinary that experienced cultivators often dismissed it after only a few weeks.

Yet Ye Chen continued to practice it.

Again.

And again.

His movements contained no wasted effort. He no longer chased speed or brute strength. Since gaining his first understanding of martial intent, he had discovered that true progress often came through patience rather than ambition.

The blade moved.

His breathing remained steady.

The morning breeze brushed against his sleeves, and instead of resisting it, his body naturally moved with it.

A nearby senior disciple paused to observe him.

"He still practices the Foundation Sword Form?"

Another disciple glanced toward Ye Chen before shaking his head.

"He has repeated that form every morning for months."

"What a waste."

The older disciple remained silent for a moment.

Then he smiled faintly.

"A foundation built over a hundred days is stronger than a palace built in haste."

The younger disciple frowned but said nothing more.

Ye Chen never noticed the conversation.

His attention rested entirely upon the sword.

Upon his breathing.

Upon the quiet rhythm of the mountain itself.

Then—

Dong...

The sound shattered the silence.

It was deep.

Ancient.

The single note rolled across the mountain like distant thunder, passing through forests, cliffs, and valleys before returning as countless echoes.

Ye Chen stopped instantly.

The vibration seemed to pass not only through the air but through the stone beneath his feet.

Even his heartbeat appeared to hesitate for the briefest moment.

Across the training grounds, every disciple lowered their weapon.

Conversations ceased.

Meditation ended.

Water buckets were carefully set upon the ground.

The mountain became completely still.

High among the pine branches, dozens of birds suddenly took flight, filling the sky with a rush of beating wings.

Several spirit beasts grazing peacefully near the forest edge lifted their heads uneasily before retreating deeper into the woods.

Nature itself had responded.

A heartbeat later—

Dong...

The second toll echoed farther than the first.

Its sound lingered among the clouds, reverberating from one mountain peak to another until the entire region seemed wrapped within its solemn voice.

Ye Chen looked toward the summit where the great Bronze Bell stood.

Although hidden by layers of mist, he could imagine its immense form suspended beneath the Hall of Discipline, a relic older than the sect itself.

Around him, expressions changed.

A young disciple whispered nervously,

"What happened?"

His companion swallowed.

"I've never heard the bell before."

Not far away, an older outer disciple quietly sheathed his sword.

His usually relaxed face had become unusually serious.

"The Bronze Bell..."

he said softly,

"...is not rung for ordinary matters."

Someone nearby asked,

"How do you know?"

"My elder brother heard it once."

The older disciple stared toward the summit.

"That was twelve years ago."

"What happened?"

"There was a beast tide."

The younger disciples exchanged uneasy glances.

Another senior disciple shook his head.

"It doesn't always mean danger."

"But it always means change."

The words settled heavily over the training ground.

Ye Chen silently observed them.

No one appeared panicked.

Instead...

They seemed prepared.

Whatever the bell signified, experienced disciples understood one thing.

When it rang...

Every member of the sect answered.

Then came the third toll.

Dong...

The sound carried farther than the first two.

It rolled beyond Azure Cloud Mountain itself, crossing forests, rivers, and distant plains before fading into the horizon.

Silence followed.

Not ordinary silence.

A silence filled with anticipation.

For several long breaths, nobody moved.

Then footsteps echoed along the stone path.

A messenger in the robes of the Hall of Affairs descended the staircase with measured strides.

His voice, strengthened by spiritual energy, spread clearly across the training grounds.

"By order of Elder Mo."

"All outer disciples are to assemble immediately at the Martial Plaza."

"No exceptions."

He bowed briefly before turning to leave.

No explanation followed.

None was needed.

The disciples immediately began making their way toward the central plaza.

There was no pushing.

No shouting.

Only disciplined order.

Ye Chen joined the silent procession.

As he walked, he noticed something he had overlooked before.

Disciples from every corner of the mountain were emerging from their courtyards.

Alchemy disciples.

Sword disciples.

Formation apprentices.

Even servants carrying cleaning tools had paused their work and respectfully stepped aside as the cultivators passed.

The entire sect seemed to move as one.

For the first time since arriving at Azure Cloud Mountain, Ye Chen truly understood the meaning of belonging to something greater than himself.

A cultivation sect was not merely a place to learn techniques.

It was a living community bound by shared discipline, shared purpose, and shared responsibility.

Above the mountain, hidden upon a lonely stone terrace, Elder Han watched the silent procession below.

His weathered eyes lingered upon the young disciples climbing toward the Martial Plaza.

Finally, they settled upon Ye Chen.

"So..."

he murmured.

"The peaceful days have ended."

A cold mountain wind swept through the ancient pines.

Far beyond Azure Cloud Mountain, on a dead branch overlooking a desolate valley, a lone black raven slowly lifted its head.

It had heard the bell.

Without hesitation, it spread its wings and vanished into the brightening sky.

The echoes of the Bronze Bell had reached farther than anyone in the sect realized.

And somewhere beyond the distant horizon...

Someone had been waiting to hear them.
