Chapter 2674: Request Canceled
Once Yuan entered the Supreme General’s living quarters, the latter closed the door behind him and said, "Start from the beginning."
Yuan nodded and recounted everything that had happened while he was outside the city, omitting a few details, such as his use of Void Manipulation to interrogate the offenders.
He then placed the device he acquired from Second Shadow onto the table.
"This is evidence that I was targeted."
The Supreme General picked up the device and looked through the evidence, raising an eyebrow when he saw the photo Second Shadow used to prove Yuan’s death.
"How does this photo of you prove your death? It looks like you’re just sleeping to me," said the Supreme General.
"They tried to poison me."
"If that’s true, how did you survive the poison? Don’t tell me that you always walk around with antidotes or something?"
Yuan smiled and said, "Of course not. My body is naturally resilient to poison."
The Supreme General did not doubt him because he was already confirmed to have the Perfected Heavenly Refinement physique.
After going through all of the evidence, the Supreme General put the device back down and said, "You’re right. There isn’t any evidence in here that can identify the ones who paid for your assassination."
"What if I say that I already know who they are?" Yuan asked.
"Are you going to say it was the Gu Family?" the Supreme General asked calmly, as though he were already aware of the situation.
"So you already knew, huh?"
"There’s nothing that happens within my military that I don’t know about," he sneered.
"Then why haven’t you done anything? Is it because you’re suspicious of me?" Yuan asked.
The Supreme General narrowed his eyes at him and replied, "It has nothing to do with you. There are rules that must be followed, and unless we can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they’re guilty, there’s nothing we can do, even if we are convinced of their guilt."
"Doesn’t that just enable people to deliberately exploit the loophole?" Yuan asked, shaking his head.
"I won’t comment any further on the military’s rules, since they were established long before I came into power," the Supreme General said.
"So I just need evidence, right? I plan on using this device to do so."
"If you intend to use it to lure them out, it won’t work. They can simply turn it around and use it as a defense instead. It’s called entrapment, and there have been precedents for that as well."
Yuan was speechless at this point.
"So you’re telling me to just sit around and wait until they successfully kill me after countless attempts because nobody can prove it’s them. Sometimes, such rules only benefit the powerful."
"Or, you can catch them in the act and find evidence—"
"Not everyone has the time for that." Yuan interrupted.
After saying that, Yuan turned around and walked to the exit.
"What are you going to do?" The Supreme General asked.
"Why bother asking when there appears to be nothing that I can do?"
"You—"
Yuan left before the Supreme General could finish his sentence.
Then, he made his way to the living quarters the Gu Family were staying in and knocked on their door.
A moment later, Colonel Gu answered the door, and his face immediately twisted with shock and disbelief upon seeing Yuan’s face.
"You look like you’ve just seen a ghost," Yuan remarked.
"W-Why are you here?" Colonel Gu had to swallow forcefully before speaking.
Yuan smiled and replied, "I just wanted to tell you that I have given General Gu plenty of chances. Unfortunately, he is clearly determined to see me dead."
"What the hell are you talking about? General Gu wants you dead? Do you have any evidence to support such outrageous accusations?" Colonel Gu frowned.
"Evidence this, evidence that. Every time you want to avoid the consequences, you hide behind that word like it’s some kind of get-out-of-jail-free card. Someone who’s truly innocent wouldn’t rely on it so desperately."
"Is that all you have to say? If so, you can leave now."
The smile on Yuan’s face became colder, even a little sinister, but he didn’t say anything else and turned around and walked away.
The Supreme General, who watched their interaction from the window, sighed in relief when Yuan left peacefully, as he was fully prepared to intervene if Yuan had attacked Colonel Gu.
Meanwhile, once Colonel Gu closed the door and went back inside the house, he snapped.
"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?! WHY IS THAT BASTARD STILL ALIVE?!?!"
Major Gu, who was inside his room, came out after hearing the commotion and asked, "What happened?"
Colonel Gu gritted his teeth angrily and explained, "We’ve been lied to again!"
"Don’t tell me..." Major Gu swallowed nervously.
"That’s right! That bastard is still alive, even though the Angry Shadows presented proof of his ’death’ earlier today!"
"Those fucking scammers!"
After a moment of silence, Major Gu asked, "What should we do now? Should we stop—"
"Stop?!" Colonel Gu snapped. "Our best chance to get rid of him is while he’s still in the Union! If we can’t even eliminate a single bastard, the General will start questioning our competence—and whether we’re worth keeping around!"
Major Gu trembled at such words.
Colonel Gu began biting his nails as he muttered, "Fuck... I wanted to get rid of him without getting our own hands dirty, but that doesn’t seem possible if even the Angry Shadows, the most reputable gang in this place, are scamming us."
However, just as he spoke those words, Major Gu received a message.
"T-The Angry Shadows has just refunded our second payment! Three hundred million credits!" Major Gu exclaimed after seeing it.
"What?" Colonel Gu frowned.
"Did they give a reason?"
Major Gu read the rest of the message and swallowed nervously before replying, "They said it’s because they’re canceling our request... and they didn’t give a proper reason for it."
"What the hell is going on?! None of this makes sense!" Colonel Gu pinched the bridge of his nose, completely stressed out by the puzzling situation.
