Cultivating in Different Professions
Chapter 95 - 88: Constable, Save Me
Chapter 95: Chapter 88: Constable, Save Me
The level of a Phenomenon was too high; even Luo Anning knew little about it.
Forget a Phenomenon—there weren’t many in Wuling City who could even grasp Conception.
Even among those who could, most had only reached minor attainment.
It was unknown if anyone had ever reached major attainment.
’Conception... going from minor to major attainment requires a full ten thousand Points. From major attainment to Perfection requires one hundred thousand Points.’
Su Mu was inwardly stunned as he reviewed the new information in his mind.
’Ten thousand Points was already enough to put him under considerable pressure. One hundred thousand... He couldn’t even dare to dream of that amount right now.’
’Even if he stopped cultivating his Cultivation Method and martial arts and saved every single Point, it would still take him six or seven hundred days to accumulate one hundred thousand Points.’
’The crucial thing was, it was impossible for him to go two or three years without spending any Points, making the goal of saving one hundred thousand seem even more distant and unattainable.’
’I’ll just have to accumulate them slowly. There’s no rush. Before I break through to the Blood Exchange realm, minor attainment of Conception is more than enough.’
Su Mu shook his head, thinking to himself.
......
「South City Bureau.」
"Are you sure?"
Su Mu asked calmly, listening to Zheng Wang’s report.
Standing before Su Mu, Zheng Wang said, "It’s pretty much a sure thing. I’ve repeatedly made inquiries through several gangs. The information should be accurate."
Zheng Wang was the most senior squad leader in the South City Bureau. Ever since Su Mu came to power, he had been the first to curry favor with him.
Su Mu didn’t have any trusted confidants in the South City Bureau to begin with. Although Zheng Wang was a bit of a smooth operator, he was still quite capable. He became even more dedicated after seeing that Su Mu had a close relationship with the new Wang Sima.
"Good."
Su Mu nodded slightly.
What Zheng Wang was talking about was the route the Xu Family used to transport their goods.
That’s right.
The ones Su Mu had told Wang Guan were smuggling military-grade weapons were none other than the Xu Family of South City.
They were using some channel to steal weapons from the City Defense Army’s armory and transport them out of the city, selling them either to the barbarian nations to the north or to Jianghu gangs.
Yang Jin and his men had stumbled upon this by chance while trying to deal with Ding Zhidou.
Before Yang Jin left, he told Su Mu about it.
Su Mu needed to build his reputation, so he naturally set his sights on the Xu Family.
Privately selling military weapons was a major crime, but the Xu Family had been doing it for many years without incident.
This indicated that the Xu Family was likely not the only party involved.
In this day and age, every family only looked out for itself. Who truly cared about the Da Xuan Court?
Selling military weapons was just another way to rake in money. As long as it didn’t affect their own power, even the City Lord’s Mansion probably couldn’t be bothered to intervene.
It was even possible that the Xu Family had the backing of one or more of the four great families of the Inner City.
If Su Mu really were to investigate this matter, he would either find nothing at all, or be forced to stop the moment he found something.
Apart from alerting the enemy, it would likely be completely useless.
Therefore, from the very beginning, he had no intention of slowly gathering evidence.
With something like this, you either did nothing, or you struck with the force of a thunderbolt, uprooting the Xu Family completely and giving neither them nor their backers a chance to react.
"Constable, I’ve already arranged for some skilled men to lie in wait, but the Xu Family is powerful. They have dozens of Hospital Martial Artists alone, and hundreds of household servants. They could even clash with our South City Bureau head-on."
Zheng Wang lowered his voice, sounding worried. "If it weren’t for this covert investigation, I would never have known that such a power was hidden here in South City. If a real fight breaks out, we might not be able to take down the Xu Family."
"I know."
Su Mu nodded. That was why he had waited all these days.
"Keep a close watch on the Xu Family’s convoy. When the time comes, Wang Lai will make his move."
Hearing this, Zheng Wang’s eyes lit up.
Wang Lai was the guard Lord Sima had brought from the Inner City. He was said to be a great expert at the Fourth Stage of Body Tempering.
’That settles it,’ he thought.
’No matter how powerful the Xu Family was, could they really afford to hire a Hospital Martial Artist at the Fourth Stage of Body Tempering?’
’A single great expert at the Fourth Stage of Body Tempering was worth thirty or forty ordinary Hospital Martial Artists!’
"Constable, I understand!"
Zheng Wang slapped his chest and declared, "I guarantee it, the Xu Family’s convoy will not make it out of the city gates tonight!"
"Go."
Su Mu stood up.
’He’d been sitting in one place for too long. It was time to get moving.’
......
「After nightfall.」
The whole of South City was shrouded in darkness.
Every household had its doors and windows shut tight, and not a soul could be seen in the pitch-black streets and alleys.
The few figures that did appear were either burglars or members of rival gangs out for blood.
Just then, two large carts slowly emerged from an alley, heading toward the city gate.
The carts were pushed and pulled by hand, making almost no sound as they moved forward.
Twenty to thirty men in practical attire followed on either side of the carts, warily scanning their surroundings as they escorted their cargo through the night.
Suddenly, figures stirred in the dark street.
More than a dozen figures rushed out from a small alley, blocking the carts’ path.
"Who goes there?"
One of the men guarding the front cart said in a low voice, "We’re just passing through. We apologize for any disturbance."
As he spoke, one of the men tossed out a small pouch.
A hand reached out from the group blocking their way, caught the pouch, and casually opened it.
In the dim moonlight, the gleam of a Silver Ingot flashed from within.
"Two hundred taels of silver, just like that. What a generous hand."
The man who caught the pouch spoke. "Could you tell this squad leader what exactly you’re transporting in these carts?"
WHOOSH!
Several torches suddenly flared to life, instantly illuminating the surroundings.
The group blocking the carts were all revealed to be wearing Official Uniforms and wielding Constable Sabers.
The expressions on the faces of the men surrounding the carts turned incredibly ugly.
The Xu Family had been using this route for many years. They had long since paid off everyone who needed to be paid. Occasionally, they might run into trouble with a gang, but spending a little silver always smoothed things over.
