Chapter 101: Chapter 91: Escort Mission

Several days passed.

The fall of the Xu Family certainly had an impact.

Following the fall of the Xu Family, South City entered a period of rare peace.

All the various gangs seemed to have quieted down and, surprisingly, even stopped fighting among themselves.

They were now uncertain of the South City Bureau’s true strength, terrified of becoming the next Xu Family.

This was a good thing. With fewer gang fights, South City had become the most peaceful of the four Outer Cities.

And yet, in another sense, the fall of the Xu Family had no impact at all.

Surprisingly, the Inner City had no reaction whatsoever to the fall of the Xu Family.

No retaliation, no reward—nothing.

It was as if the whole affair was utterly insignificant.

Su Mu had been on high alert for retaliation from the Inner City, but after several days of silence, he couldn’t help but let his guard down.

’It seems the Inner City has decided to downplay this, to sweep the illegal sale of military equipment under the rug.’

Su Mu knew he had been oversimplifying things.

’Just like in my past life, if working hard was the key to promotion, then the common folk wouldn’t even get the chance to be worked to death.’

It wasn’t that the patrons behind the Xu Family weren’t retaliating; it was that their revenge was far more sophisticated.

’A promotion? Not a chance.’

’Not only would he be denied a promotion this time, but he might be blocked from ever advancing again.’

’Of course, that was all assuming I remain at my current level of strength.’

’If I had already reached the Blood Transformation Realm in my cultivation, no one would be able to hold me back.’

"Brother Mu, don’t you worry! No one is going to steal the credit you deserve!"

Wang Guan cursed, "The recommendation to make you a Minister was rejected by the Inner City! Those bastards claim the position of Minister is for a Civil Servant."

"Bullshit!"

"What damn difference is there between Civil and Military Officers in our Da Xuan? Is a Sima a Civil or a Military Officer? Is the City Lord a Civil or a Military Officer?"

"Screw them! The City Lord is a Martial Artist too!"

"It’s alright. We’ll find another chance,"

Su Mu said.

"No way! We absolutely cannot let this go! Brother Mu, you just wait. I’m going to head to the Inner City, and I won’t leave until they give me a proper explanation!"

Wang Guan fumed, hopping around like an angry toad.

"Sima, let’s discuss the actual matter at hand."

the Master prompted from the side.

Su Mu glanced over, confused.

’Hadn’t Wang Guan urgently summoned him because his promotion was rejected?’

"Oh, right. I almost forgot."

Wang Guan slapped his forehead. "Brother Mu, something’s come up, and I think you’re the only one who can handle it."

"What is it?"

Su Mu asked.

"Master, why don’t you explain? I can’t remember all the long-winded details,"

Wang Guan said, slightly annoyed, having opened his mouth only to forget the specifics.

"Constable Xiao Su, here’s the situation."

The Master began with a wry smile. "There is a shipment of military equipment and medical supplies that needs to be delivered into Daxing Mountain."

"This task was originally handled by the Xu Family. But now that they’re gone, the higher-ups have pushed the job onto our South City Bureau."

"Why are we sending these things into Daxing Mountain?"

Su Mu asked, puzzled.

"You don’t know, Constable Xiao Su?"

the Master asked, looking surprised.

"Should I?"

Su Mu was even more puzzled.

"You’re one of the Taiping Bureau White Clothes, Constable Xiao Su. I thought you would have known,"

the Master explained. "Daxing Mountain is teeming with demons and monsters. The masters from the Taiping Bureau have been building a line of defense in the mountains, preventing the creatures from breaking out and threatening Wuling City."

"To support the Taiping Bureau’s operations, our Wuling City Defense Army has built several supply outposts in Daxing Mountain. These serve as garrisons for the City Defense Army and as rest stops for the masters of the Taiping Bureau."

Understanding dawned on Su Mu.

The City Defense Army was responsible for the security of Wuling City. They guarded the Inner and Outer City walls, but they also had a duty to support the Taiping Bureau’s operations.

The Taiping Bureau was the main force for slaying demons and evil, but their numbers were limited. They sometimes required significant support from the local garrisons.

Hence the supply outposts the Master had mentioned.

And since they were supply outposts, they naturally required regular shipments of supplies.

The Xu Family had originally been responsible for one of the supply routes.

Now that the Xu Family was gone, it was too late to find a replacement on such short notice.

So the task fell to the South City Bureau.

"This is a critical mission," the Master said, his expression turning serious. "If the supplies don’t arrive on time, the garrisons at the outposts could face a crisis. It could even impact the masters of the Taiping Bureau. Our South City Bureau cannot bear those consequences."

"I understand."

Su Mu nodded. ’I can’t believe the Xu Family was responsible for such a crucial task.’

’It was probably this very responsibility that made it so easy for them to sell military equipment on the side.’

’But that didn’t matter now. What mattered was getting the supplies to the outposts.’

This was no easy task.

Demons and monsters could appear anywhere in Daxing Mountain, not to mention ruthless bandits.

That was precisely why Wang Guan had thought of Su Mu.

In all of South City, Su Mu was likely the only one who could accomplish this mission.

"Brother Mu, once you complete this mission, I’d like to see what excuse the Inner City comes up with to deny you the position of Minister!"

Wang Guan declared.

"In that case, I’ll make the trip."

Su Mu mused for a moment before speaking slowly.

’He really couldn’t refuse this.’

’This concerned the Taiping Bureau. His duty as a constable for the South City Bureau aside, his status as one of the Taiping Bureau White Clothes alone meant he couldn’t just stand by and watch his colleagues run out of supplies.’

’Transporting supplies into Daxing Mountain was certainly dangerous, but thankfully, the outposts were likely located in the outer regions. The risk should be manageable.’
