Crown Of Vengeance: A Queen's Judgment.
Chapter 81: The Audience Begins.
Chapter 81
The soft sweep of silk against stone resonated softly throughout the bedchamber as Sigrid dusted the final layer of translucent powder across her cheekbones. The morning light cast a brilliant, pale luminescence over the silver-embroidered velvet of her gown, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship that proclaimed her status to the high court. Setting her ivory brush onto the polished wood of the vanity table, Sigrid met her own gaze in the mirror, her crimson eyes clear, sharp, and entirely unbothered by the gravity of the hours ahead.
Rising gracefully from the cushioned chair, she turned to find Lilith wringing her hands near the doorway, her apron crumpled beneath the tight grip of her trembling fingers. "I shall return before dusk, Lilith," Sigrid murmured serenely, adjusting the silk mantle draped across her shoulders.
Lilith swallowed hard, stepping forward as if to reach for her mistress’s sleeve before pulling back with a nervous bow. "I... I understand, my lady. Please take utmost care."
Sigrid paused, letting out a soft, amused breath at the maid’s pale countenance. "Do not look as though you are preparing to witness my execution, Lilith. It is merely an audience with the Queen, not a march into the abyss."
"I know, Your Grace," Lilith stammered, her voice barely above a whisper as she glanced toward the grand hallway beyond. "It is simply that... the Her Majesty’s reputation is formidable. They say her influence within the inner sanctuary of the palace is absolute, and she does not welcome those who alter the balance of the realm."
Sigrid offered a small, reassuring smile, her expression remaining entirely composed. "Then she and I shall have much to discuss. Maintain your composure while I am absent." Leaving the quiet safety of her private chambers, Sigrid navigated the grand stone corridors of the Northern Fortress, her heels clicking in a measured, deliberate rhythm against the polished marble floor.
Upon stepping beyond the main gates where the ducal carriage awaited, Sigrid found Soren already standing by the open gilded door. He was clad in his finest northern ceremonial armor, the dark steel etched with gold thread and draped with a cloak of heavy sable fur that accentuated his broad, towering frame. Recognizing her approach, he turned, his sharp blue eyes sweeping over her ensemble with quiet approval.
"I apologize for keeping you waiting, my lord," Sigrid said smoothly, stopping a few paces away as the chilly morning wind caught the edge of her mantle.
Soren stepped forward, extending a gloved hand to assist her up the carriage steps. "You have no need to apologize, Duchess. You are precisely on time."
Sigrid rested her palm in his, allowing him to guide her into the plush, velvet-lined interior of the coach. "Even so, we departed the same bedchamber at the same hour, yet I forced you to wait beneath the cold wind simply because my preparation required additional effort."
Soren climbed into the cabin after her, settling his large frame onto the opposing bench as the heavy door clicked shut. A subtle, almost imperceptible smirk touched the corner of his lips as the carriage lurched into motion. "Is it not a husband’s solemn duty to wait patiently while his wife prepares herself? I would gladly stand in the freezing rain for twice as long, provided you do not rush yourself into an uneasy state. After all, you are to face the Queen today."
Sigrid settled back against the dark cushions, a melodious laugh escaping her lips. "Your compliments grow more refined by the day, my lord. One might begin to suspect you are actively practicing them."
Soren leaned back, resting his arms against the carved armrests while his deep baritone filled the enclosed space of the carriage. "When a man is blessed with a partner as striking as you, he is quite forced to elevate his speech. It would be a grave insult to your radiance were I to remain as blunt as my knights."
Sigrid’s crimson eyes glinted with quiet amusement as she tilted her head. "Pray continue in this manner, Duke Aethermor, and you might soon convince the high nobility and your own household guard that the cold Warlord of the North has been replaced by a charming impostor."
Soren’s gaze darkened with a quiet, lingering intensity, his voice dropping an octave as he looked directly into her eyes. "Careful, my lady. Speak such dangerous theories aloud, and the High Clergy might drag you to the stakes for practicing witchcraft to transform my nature."
Sigrid leaned forward slightly, resting her chin upon her gloved hand as a teasing smile touched her lips. "And tell me, my lord... would you truly stand by and allow them to burn me?"
Soren reached across the short expanse dividing them, his large hand gently capturing hers. Without breaking eye contact, he lifted her fingers to his lips, pressing a slow, deliberate kiss against her knuckles. "Never," he rumbled softly, the weight of his promise absolute and unquestionable.
A quiet silence settled over the carriage, filled only by the rhythmic clatter of horse hooves against the stone highway. Sigrid held his gaze for a long moment, feeling an unfamiliar warmth bloom within her chest—a sudden, rapid fluttering of her heart that momentarily caught her breath. She studied his resolute features, wondering at the strange effect his presence was beginning to have on her carefully guarded emotions, before both of them let out quiet, shared chuckles as the tension dissolved into comfortable silence.
The journey concluded as the carriage passed through the towering iron gates of the Royal Palace, coming to a smooth halt within the cobblestone courtyard. Soren stepped out first, extending his hand to help Sigrid down onto the stone path. As she smoothed her skirts, Soren leaned in closer, his expression shifting into one of genuine, guarded concern. "You need not feel intimidated by Her Majesty, Sigrid. Should she attempt to threaten your standing or corner you with her words, do not distress yourself. I shall intervene and dismantle her maneuvers myself."
Sigrid scoffed softly, a proud, amused glint returning to her eyes. "Do not underestimate my capabilities, Soren. I am hardly a helpless girl to be shielded from a queen’s sharp tongue."
Soren looked down at her, his dark brows furrowing slightly. "I do not underestimate you, Duchess. I simply know the Queen’s nature all too well. She possesses subtle, insidious methods of bending people to her will, methods that do not rely on crude displays of power."
Sigrid paused, a brief wave of curiosity washing over her as she wondered what lingering scars or past encounters had made the formidable Duke so visibly apprehensive regarding the Queen’s inner sanctuary. Reaching out, she patted his arm lightly. "Then you had best remain watchful, my lord, so that you are prepared should I require your assistance."
In response, Soren’s lips curved into a rare, genuine smile—a sight so striking and breathtaking that Sigrid felt her heart strike against her ribs once more, leaving her momentarily frozen as she questioned the strange sensation stirring in her chest.
"I shall see you after my audience with the King," Soren said quietly, bowing his head slightly before turning to follow a royal knight toward the state council chambers.
Sigrid took a slow, steadying breath, collecting her thoughts as a young palace attendant bowed low before her. "If Her Grace would please follow me, Her Majesty is waiting in the private solar."
Sigrid followed the attendant through the grand, winding corridors of the inner palace. Every arched doorway, carved pillar, and gilded tapestry evoked a phantom sense of familiarity, dragging forth bitter memories of her past life when she had walked these very halls as Ragnar’s tragic, neglected pawn. Yet today, she walked them as the reigning Duchess of Aethermor, her posture straight and her step unwavering.
They finally reached the heavy mahogany doors leading into the Queen’s personal wing. The attendant knocked thrice before clearing his throat. "Announcing Her Grace, Sigrid Aethermor, Duchess of the Northern Fortress."
The heavy doors swung open slowly, revealing a grand, sunlit chamber adorned with rare silks and foreign porcelain. Seated upon a high-backed, gilded throne at the far end of the room was Queen Evelyn. Draped in magnificent emerald robes, her crown catching the morning light, the Queen fixed her gaze upon Sigrid. Her eyes were sharp, cold, and heavy with unmistakable contempt and deep-seated wariness.
"Enter, Duchess," Queen Evelyn commanded, her voice ringing clear and demanding across the vast, quiet room.
Sigrid stepped over the threshold, her crimson eyes meeting the Queen’s gaze with absolute, unyielding calm.
