Chapter 56

Emerging from the soothing warmth of her bath, Sigrid draped herself in a heavy gown of deep crimson velvet, the thick fabric offering a welcome shield against the lingering chill of the stone corridors. As Lilith stepped forward to tend to her damp hair, Sigrid caught a sudden flicker of movement through the tall bay window of the bedchamber. Gliding toward the frosted glass, her gaze swept across the sweeping cobblestone driveway below, where a grand black carriage bearing the silver crest of House Aethermor was grinding to a halt. Recognizing the arrival of Soren, Sigrid gestured for Lilith to step aside, smoothing her skirts before making her way down the grand marble staircase to receive him.

Reaching the spacious, torchlit foyer just as the massive iron-reinforced doors swung inward, Sigrid executed a fluid, flawless curtsey. "Welcome back to your fortress, my Lord Duke," she greeted softly, her voice carrying a delicate warmth. Yet, as she straightened her spine to look upon his features, her crimson eyes widened by a subtle fraction.

Soren stood framed by the doorway, his broad shoulders tense beneath a frosted travelling cloak. The usual impassive stone of his countenance was entirely shattered, replaced by an unmistakable shadow of raw frustration and brooding anger. It was a startling sight; Sigrid found herself wondering what manner of madness at the capital could have stirred such visible disquiet in a man so renowned for his unyielding composure.

Commander Orion stepped forward swiftly, taking the heavy fur cloak from his master’s shoulders. So consumed was Soren by his own turbulent thoughts that he traversed the grand hall with heavy, unseeing strides, entirely oblivious to the woman standing gracefully before him.

"SOREN!!," Sigrid called out, raising her voice slightly to pierce his daze. Soren halted abruptly, his head snapping toward her.

A look of genuine shock crossed his features before he bowed his head in a hasty gesture of respect. "Duchess... forgive me. I did not perceive your presence. I was... thoroughly preoccupied."

Sigrid offered a serene, understanding smile, stepping closer to him. "Do not distress yourself, my Lord. It is plain to see that some heavy burden weighs upon your mind."

Soren let out a harsh, gravelly sigh, running a weary hand over his face before sinking into a high-backed leather armchair beside the hearth. He stared into the crackling embers for a long moment, his icy blue eyes brimming with a deeply complicated emotion. "Sigrid," he began slowly, his deep voice carrying a strange, hesitant edge, "tell me... if you were to discover that your own father had utterly abandoned you, leaving you to the mercy of a hostile world, what feeling would bloom within your chest?"

Sigrid paused, her expression turning cool and distant as she considered his question. "I should feel nothing at all," she answered flatly. "Though he may share my blood, a man who ostracizes his child within her own home forfeits the right to be called a father. He becomes a mere stranger."

Sigrid narrowed her eyes slightly, observing the dark shadow that lingered over his brow. "Why do you ask such a question to me, Soren?"

Did my father say something unpleasant about my person which enraged the Duke? He may have been of total shock to have seen how a father would treat his own very blood.

The Duke offered no immediate answer, shifting his gaze back to the flames as if searching for words he could not bring himself to speak. After a heavy silence, he raised his head once more, his gaze intense. "Tell me of the late Duchess of Beaufort... your mother. Did she ever possess a personal connection with Her Majesty the Queen? Did she, perhaps, stir some deep offense against the Crown?"

At the mention of her mother, every instinct within Sigrid surged into sharp alert. She took a step forward, her tone laced with guarded caution. "What brings you to speak of my mother?"

Soren rubbed his jaw, his voice dropping to a low growl. "At court today, the Queen spoke of her with a strange, bitter familiarity—as though your mother had personally incited her wrath many years ago."

Sigrid frowned deeply, sifting through the vault of her memories. "My mother passed when I was but five years of age. I was young, yet I recall no instance of her ever mingling with the imperial court, nor would she have had cause to anger the Queen. My former father was never favored by King Cassian, nor did he seek the palace’s favor. I cannot fathom where such a connection would originate."

Soren’s brow furrowed tightly as he processed her words. "Then it is a mystery best left in the dark for now. I apologize if my probing has unburied bitter memories of your past."

Sigrid shook her head gently, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips. "Do not apologize, my Lord. I welcome any opportunity to recall my mother, be the memory sweet or solemn. She was the sole soul in this world who offered me unreserved love." As the words left her mouth, a sudden, vivid fragment flashed across her mind—the gentle touch of her mother’s warm hand stroking her hair in a sunlit garden, dissolving instantly into the cold, desolate memory of the funeral pyre. Sigrid forced the ghostly images back into the dark recesses of her mind, maintaining her composure. "Besides, you did nothing wrong. You merely sought to forewarn me."

"You are my betrothed, and soon to be my wife under God," Soren stated firmly, his tone carrying a protective weight.

Sigrid’s crimson eyes gleamed with a mischievous light, a teasing smile playing upon her lips. "And for how long shall that title remain mine, I wonder?"

Soren’s dark eyebrows pulled together in sharp confusion. Sigrid stepped nearer to his chair, her voice dipping into a melodious, taunting purr. "You are a warrior Duke, constantly called to distant border campaigns, grand expeditions, and bloody wars. Who is to say that one day you might not decide to sever our union? Perhaps you shall grow weary of me, or seek a new Duchess... or perhaps you foresee a deadly conflict on the horizon that demands you cast me aside."

Soren’s entire frame stiffened instantly, his muscles locking in visible tension. Sigrid watched him with hidden delight, observing the subtle twitch of his jaw. It was remarkably easy to read the stoic warlord once one understood his character. She could see the exact trajectory of his thoughts—he was anticipating the inevitable day he would rise against the imperial Crown, believing he would have to cut her ties to House Aethermor to spare her from being executed for his treason. He felt a profound, silent guilt for drawing her into his dangerous orbit. For a man who commanded legions upon bloody battlefields, his noble heart was astonishingly transparent.

"Do not fret yourself with such noble lies, my Lord Duke," Sigrid continued softly, her gaze locking onto his wide, astonished blue eyes with unyielding resolve. "No matter what trials lie ahead, no matter what dark storm you intend to weather, I shall not be cast away from your side. I have no desire to be made a laughingstock before the entire realm by being abandoned a second time."

Soren remained frozen, staring at her in profound silence before offering a single, slow nod of acceptance. Sigrid turned toward the hearth, her heart brimming with quiet triumph. Do not fear, my stoic Duke, she thought inwardly, watching the firelight dance across his formidable silhouette. You believe you are protecting me from your treason, oblivious to the fact that my path leads to the exact same throne. We are bound by the same destiny, and together, we shall burn their empire to the ground.

Soren’s brow furrowed in a deep, sharp crease, his icy blue eyes narrowing as he fixed his gaze upon her. "What do you mean by that, Sigrid?" he demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low rumble.

Sigrid merely offered a serene, enigmatic smile, holding his intense glare without a single flicker of hesitation. "I mean precisely what I said, my Lord."

Unclenching his hands from the armrests, Soren stood up from the armchair, his towering frame casting a broad shadow over her as he took a slow, deliberate step closer. He looked down at her with an unyielding intensity, his jaw tight. "You shall never become a laughingstock to anyone in this realm," he declared firmly, his voice laced with a heavy, protective gravity. "Should misfortune ever strike, you will be left with vast riches and total immunity. My sins, my burdens, and my bloody trials shall never be tied to your name."

He is not even attempting to hide his intentions anymore, Sigrid thought internally, a secret, cold amusement stirring within her heart. She tilted her head upward, meeting his resolute gaze with practiced innocence. "You speak with such grim finality, Soren, as though you fully intend to abandon me for reasons you refuse to disclose. Yet you forget that we are bound together. We are betrothed, soon to be husband and wife, and shortly our souls shall be sealed beneath the eyes of the Heavens themselves."

Stepping back gracefully to create a comfortable distance between them, Sigrid waved her hand dismissively, as if brushing away the heavy tension hanging in the air. "Let us speak no more of abandonments and solemn vows tonight. God alone knows how our conversation drifted into such morbid territory."

Soren observed her movement, his expression shifting to one of quiet intrigue. "What is it, then? What truly weighs upon your mind?"

Sigrid let out a soft sigh, her sharp crimson eyes dimming with a genuine, sorrowful frown. "While you were away, I walked near the lower gates... and I learned of the dire situation troubling the citizens of your territory."
