Crown Of Vengeance: A Queen's Judgment.
Chapter 29: Alliance established.
Chapter 29
The oppressive silence within the chamber was absolute, broken only by the steady, heavy breathing of the towering warlord who stood at the threshold. Soren’s gaze remained fixed upon the older woman, his expression devoid of any familial warmth, carving an invisible divide between himself and the matriarch. The air grew perceptibly colder as he finally parted his lips, his voice dropping into a gravelly, resonant baritone that echoed with absolute authority. "Your Grace Hildegard, did I give you permission to disturb my new bride? Please leave this room at once."
Sigrid felt a sharp jolt of surprise ripple beneath her carefully constructed facade. It was not merely the coldness in his delivery that startled her, but the precise manner in which he addressed his own mother. To use her title and given name rather than a maternal honorific spoke volumes of a profound, fractured estrangement that ran deep.
Hildegard’s scowl deepened into a mask of bitter malice, her posture rigid as she defiantly refused to yield the floor. "Why did you bring this wretched girl into our household, Soren?" she demanded, her voice trembling with a volatile mixture of wounded pride and rage. "You have compromised the dignity of our lineage for a capital outcast!"
"You demanded that I bring home a highborn wife from Arkovia to secure the northern borders, and that is precisely what I have executed," Soren countered, his blue eyes narrowing to icy slits as he took a single, deliberate step forward. The sheer mass of his presence seemed to compress the very air in the room, forcing the elder woman backward by a mere fraction of an inch. "Whom I choose to elevate to the station of Duchess is entirely my own affair, and it remains none of your concern. Now, vacate these quarters before I am forced to ensure your departure."
The matriarch stood her ground for a fraction of a second longer, her features tightening as she attempted to summon the remnants of her fading authority. Yet, as Soren’s shadow fell completely over her, his unyielding silence conveyed a promise of severe consequences. "Leave this chamber," he murmured, the softness of his delivery far more menacing than a shout, "or else."
Hildegard’s eyes widened, a sudden flicker of genuine terror piercing through her stubborn, aristocratic veneer. Realizing that any further defiance would result in a humiliating expulsion, she spun on her heel, her obsidian silk skirts whipping violently against the stone floor. As she crossed the threshold, she cast one final, venomous glare back at Sigrid. "You will pay for your insolence, girl," she hissed, before turning her hateful gaze toward her son. Without another word, she marched out into the corridor, throwing the heavy oak door shut behind her with a deafening thud that vibrated through the entire stone estate.
The sudden absence of the matriarch left the bedchamber remarkably quiet, save for the soft rustle of the morning wind against the high casements. Sigrid remained standing, her bare feet pressing firmly against the cold stone, her analytical gaze tracking the Duke as he finally turned his full attention toward her. She braced herself for the standard reprimand, expecting him to either question her sharp tongue or turn a blind eye to the domestic hostility brewing within his own walls. Instead, Soren bowed his head by a calculated fraction of an inch, his expression softening into an inscrutable mask of courtly nobility.
"I must offer my sincere apologies for this unseemly disturbance, Lady Sigrid," Soren spoke, his gravelly baritone quiet yet resonant in the stillness of the room. "It was not my intention to have your first morning in this estate ruined by such unwarranted hostility."
Sigrid’s crimson eyes blinked in genuine surprise, a rare fracture appearing in her courtly composure. She had accustomed herself to men who used women as shields or political pawns, yet here stood the feared Duke of the North, a man wailed to be ruthless extending a chivalrous apology for an encounter she had already thoroughly dismantled. Recovering her aristocratic poise in an instant, she offered a measured, elegant inclination of her head.
"Do not underestimate my capabilities, Your Grace," she replied, her voice carrying a trace of her past queenly pride. "I am far more resilient than I may appear, and a bitter noblewoman is hardly enough to breach my defenses."
"That much I have already come to learn," Soren murmured, his piercing blue eyes dropping once more to the floor, tracking the slight tremor in her legs.
Sigrid felt the heavy weight of his scrutiny landing directly upon her exposed, bandaged feet. A sudden prickle of aristocratic embarrassment touched her spine; to be perceived in such a state of undress and physical vulnerability by the very man she intended to use as an instrument of vengeance was highly unacceptable. "Forgive me for meeting you in this unseemly manner, Your Grace," she spoke formally, turning her body back toward the safety of the canopy bed.
She took a single step, but before her weight could fully press into the throbbing, split skin of her heel, Soren moved with an astonishing, silent swiftness that completely defied his massive build. In one seamless motion, he swept her up into his arms, lifting her entirely off the cold stone floor.
Sigrid’s breath hitched, her fingers instinctively clutching at the rough wool of his heavy traveling cloak to maintain her balance. It was a startling display of raw physical power that momentarily fractured her composure. From the corner of the room, Lilith let out a high-pitched, startled shriek, her small hands flying to her mouth in absolute terror at the sight of the feared warlord handling her mistress.
Soren did not glance at the servant as he walked toward the bed, his voice ringing out with flat finality. "Leave us, maid." Lilith did not need to be told twice. Terrified by the severe demeanor of the Northern Duke, she scurried toward the secondary service door like a frightened rabbit, the latch clicking softly behind her.
A slow, wicked smirk returned to Sigrid’s lips as Soren gently deposited her onto the silk pillows, ensuring her injured feet were properly supported. "Your Grace, I must ask that you do not frighten my maid so thoroughly," she remarked with an amused, melodic cadence. "Good help is remarkably difficult to retain when one’s husband terrifies the household staff."
Soren did not reply to her jest. Instead, he pulled the low wooden stool Lilith had previously occupied toward the bedside and seated himself. His immense height meant that even while sitting, his presence completely dominated her immediate periphery. He leaned forward slightly, resting his forearms against his knees, his piercing blue eyes locking onto her crimson gaze with an intensity that refused to grant her an escape. For several long, quiet minutes, he simply stared at her, analyzing every line of her face, as if trying to decipher a complex riddle written in a foreign tongue. "Why did you propose this alliance to me?" Soren finally asked, the question cutting through the quiet room with the precision of a blade.
Sigrid smiled, the expression brilliant and predatory as she leaned back against the headboard. She had expected this inquiry the moment she extended her hand in the imperial ballroom, and she had no intention of weaving a delicate lie to satisfy his curiosity. "You offer the absolute best options a suitor could possibly provide in this Kingdom," she stated plainly, watching with immense internal satisfaction as Soren’s blue eyes twitched by a fraction.
"Do iterate further," Soren murmured, his curiosity clearly piqued.
"You are immensely powerful, extraordinarily wealthy, and undeniably handsome," Sigrid continued, her voice smooth and measured as she listed his attributes as though she were reading a merchant’s ledger. "Furthermore, your northern domain provides the perfect sanctuary, entirely isolated from the crown’s direct influence, for me to enact my grand designs." She chose not to elaborate on the bloody vengeance she intended to rain down upon the Beaufort name and the royal lineage, but her mind remained perfectly settled; every word she spoke was the absolute truth. If he demanded the specific details of her plot, she would share them, for their fates were now inextricably bound.
To her immense satisfaction, Soren’s eyes widened even more by a fraction, a visible ripple of surprise breaking through his stoic demeanor. Internally, Sigrid had been thoroughly annoyed by his total lack of reaction to the chaotic events of the previous evening; seeing that she could genuinely startle the great warlord brought a sense of vindication to her chest.
Soren stared at her for a long moment before letting out a low, rough chuckle, standing up to his full height as he shook his head. "You truly are a cunning little devil, are you not?" he said, a dangerous glint of respect softening the hard lines of his mouth. "Very well. Do as you wish, Sigrid Thea Beaufort—or rather, Sigrid Thea Aethermor. I have already visited the civil bureau this morning to ensure our marriage is legally recorded within the state ledgers. You are officially my wedded wife, and I am your husband." Sigrid watched him closely, noting the business-like finality with which he spoke of their marriage.
"I care little for the hidden motives behind your request to join my house," Soren continued, pacing slowly toward the center of the room. "So long as your grand designs do not interfere with my own governance of the north, you have free rein within these walls. In truth, you saved me the immense trouble of hunting for a capital bride, even if it came at the complete expense of your social reputation among the highborn circles."
"You need not worry yourself over my reputation, Your Grace," Sigrid replied smoothly, her voice laced with an aristocratic cynicism. "However, you must be prepared, for I fully intend to exercise my lawful rights as your Duchess. I shall exhaust your vast northern resources to ensure my success."
"Exhaust them as you see fit," Soren replied carelessly, turning his steps toward the heavy oak exit. He paused at the threshold, his hand resting on the brass handle as he looked back over his shoulder. "I note that you handled Her Grace Hildegard with remarkable skill this morning, but I must advise caution moving forward. She can be exceedingly troublesome when her authority is thwarted."
"I have no desire to pry into the peculiar nature of your relationship with her," Sigrid said, her tone settling into an unyielding finality. "But you need not spend a single breath worrying for my safety. I am no timid bird to be caged by an elder’s wrath."
Soren offered a firm, approving nod of his head. "Good. However, you must remember that you are now the Duchess of Aethermor. In due time, you will be required to fulfill your matrimonial duties to the lineage." He walked back to the edge of the bed with a slow, deliberate stride, bending down until his shadow completely enveloped her. He reached out, placing his large, warm hand directly against her pale cheek. The heat of his palm was a silent, heavy challenge, but Sigrid did not flinch, nor did she turn away from his touch. Instead, she leaned into the pressure slightly, her crimson eyes flashing with an ancient, dark defiance.
"That is precisely what I would have expected from my husband, Your Grace," she countered softly, her voice steady and entirely devoid of the maidenly modesty that usually governed newly wedded ladies.
Soren’s eyes widened for the second time that morning, a sudden flash of heat passing through his blue depths before he pulled his hand away. Sigrid scoffed silently within the privacy of her mind, a wave of cold amusement washing over her spirit. Did you truly believe you could frighten a resurrected queen using the mere prospects of consummation and child-bearing? she thought, watching as the Duke stood to his full, towering height, cleared his throat, and swiftly exited the chamber without another word.
The heavy doors clicked shut, and Sigrid was left smiling into the quiet room. A moment later, the secondary door creaked open, and Lilith peeked her head into the space, her eyes darting around cautiously before she crept toward the foot of the bed. Seeing the serene, triumphant smile etched into her mistress’s features, the maid let out a soft, trembling sigh.
"Milady... is the Duke not absolutely terrifying?" Lilith whispered, her hands shaking slightly as she adjusted the porcelain jar of ointment on the stool. "The sheer size of him, and the way he commands the room... he carries himself like a monster of the ice fields."
Sigrid pulled the silk sheets up over her lap, her mind tracing the lingering warmth on her cheek. "No," she replied simply.
Lilith shrieked softly, covering her mouth with both hands. "But he is, Milady! Especially if one considers all the dark rumors that echo through the capital taverns regarding his campaigns in the northern wastes! They say he bleeds his enemies without a single shred of mercy!"
"Do not allow your ears to believe every idle rumor spun by the fearful, Lilith," Sigrid warned, her voice dropping into a stern register that caused the maid to nod her head in sudden shame. "A warlord is merely a man who understands the currency of violence. He is far more predictable than the politicians who trade secrets over porcelain."
Lilith smoothed her apron, her youthful curiosity rapidly overcoming her lingering anxiety as she leaned closer to the bed. "If I may ask, Milady... what did the Duke tell you before he departed? Did he speak of the Beaufort estate?"
Sigrid looked toward the heavy oak doors, her gaze dark and contemplative as she recalled the weight of his large hand against her skin. "He merely reminded me that I should be well aware of my matrimonial duties as his Duchess," she stated indifferently.
A deep, vibrant flush of embarrassment instantly flooded Lilith’s features, a knowing, scandalous smile touching the corners of her lips as she looked down at the floorboards.
Sigrid frowned slightly at the display, her tone sharpening with an aristocratic detachment. "Why do you exhibit such shame, Lilith? Have you not engaged in the management of such domestic expectations during your time in my father’s household?" An even greater wave of shame and scarlet color flooded the young maid’s face, her head bowing so low it practically touched her chest.
Sigrid merely sighed, dismissing the display with a wave of her hand. "Do not pay much mind to such trifles, Lilith," she murmured, her gaze drifting back toward the heavy oak doors where the warlord had exited. "Furthermore, I highly doubt the Duke ever wastes his time thinking of such domestic nonsense anyway."
