Crown Of Vengeance: A Queen's Judgment.
Chapter 26: End of the storm.
Chapter 26
The whimpering creature on the floor convulsed once more, his manicured fingers clawing at the polished marble as the invisible pressure within his veins threatened to tear his composure apart.
Sigrid looked down at him, her silhouette framed by the luminescence of the palace chandeliers, her expression completely detached from the visceral agony unfolding at her feet. "Speak," she commanded, her voice dropping to a low, melodic register that somehow reverberated to the furthest corners of the silent, suffocating hall, "or you shall continue to endure the slow unraveling of your flesh until there is nothing left but your sins."
The unkempt man gritted his teeth, his face twisting into a grotesque grimace of compliance as the agonizing pressure forced his compliance. Slowly, painfully, he dragged himself into a posture of absolute subjugation, pressing his forehead flat against the cold stone before the gathered nobility. "Forgive me, Your Imperial Highness, forgive me!" he croaked, his voice cracking under the weight of his sudden, supernatural terror. "I am a criminal... a monster who takes innocent women from the lower districts and binds them in darkness for my own wretched pleasure!"
A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the grand ballroom, louder and more chaotic than before, as the high society of Arkovia recoiled from the stark, unvarnished depravity laid bare in their presence.
Maria Beaufort’s flawless face drained of all color, her hands flying to her mouth in a perfectly synchronized display of maidenly horror, while Duke Vesper stood frozen, his eyes wide with a mixture of profound embarrassment and panic. Sigrid observed their reactions with a cold precision, instantly concluding that while her father and stepfamily were undoubtedly malicious, they were likely too incompetent to have fully investigated the vile appetites of the suitor they had bartered her to. They had merely sought a swift, quiet disposal, entirely negligent of the beast they were welcoming into their lineage.
Turning her sharp, crimson gaze toward her trembling sire, Sigrid let out a quiet, mocking breath. "Behold the grand future you meticulously carved for your eldest daughter, Father," she murmured, her tone dripping with an icy, aristocratic disdain. "The man you brought to inherit my virtue is revealed to be nothing more than a degenerate breeder of slaves, yet you expect me to sit quietly beneath the yoke of your future commands? You jest."
Before Duke Vesper could construct a response to salvage his crumbling dignity, the disgraced nobleman was dragged from the floor despite his desperate struggles.
"No! Please! Spare me! I confessed! I did as she commanded!" His piercing screams echoed through the winding palace corridors as the imperial guards hauled him toward the deep dungeons beneath the capital, his cries gradually fading into the distance until only a heavy silence remained.
Sigrid watched him disappear without the slightest change in her expression; justice had merely begun. Only then did she feel the intense weight of another pair of eyes resting upon her, prompting her to turn slightly. Prince Ragnar stood a few paces away, but the fury that had consumed his handsome features moments earlier had shifted into something altogether different—a striking mixture of curiosity, admiration, and unbridled fascination.
It sickened her to her very core. His gaze lingered upon her as though he had suddenly discovered a priceless treasure hidden beneath the dust, but Sigrid ignored his royal presence completely, severing her attention without a second glance.
"From this day forward, I am no longer your daughter, Duke Vesper," she stated with an elegant, final finality that left no room for negotiation. "I shall carry your family name for now only because it belongs to my mother, but do not dare to look upon me as family again." Internally, her mind chanted her strategy, if she was to completely dismantle House Beaufort from the roots up, she required an absolute separation from them, ensuring no legal or social tether could drag her down when their inevitable ruin commenced.
With the family drama cast aside, Sigrid turned her full, undivided attention back to Duke Soren Aethermor, who had remained entirely motionless throughout the entire chaotic spectacle, observing her performance with the silent, predatory interest of a wolf watching a calculated hunt. Lowering herself into a flawless, mesmerizing curtsy, she smoothed the heavy folds of her crimson gown. "I must offer my sincerest apologies, My Lord, for wasting your valuable time this evening," she murmured softly, her eyes locking onto his piercing blue depths. "As you have vibrantly witnessed, I have been forcefully disturbed by the ghosts of my past."
Duke Soren slowly rose to his full, imposing height, his broad shoulders casting a long shadow over the alcove as his gaze raked down her frame and then shifted toward the furious prince and her fractured family. "You kept the entire assembly under your absolute control, Lady Sigrid," he responded, his deep, resonant voice vibrating with a rich, gravelly timber that seemed to echo in her very bones. "It was an exceptionally impressive display of governance."
Sigrid offered him a small, calculated smile, stepping forward with the intention of pressing her advantage and securing his formal alliance. "If I do not seize control of the narrative, My Lord, it would quickly mean the absolute end of my existence," she replied smoothly, but as she took her next step toward him, a sharp, white-hot flash of agony shot up her leg. Her composure briefly fractured as she winced, her eyes instinctively darting down to her feet only to realize that the delicate skin at the back of her heel had split, stained with a thin crescent of blood. In her fierce desire for vengeance, she had temporarily forgotten that her physical body was still young, soft, and unaccustomed to the agonizingly tight, restrictive high heels demanded by current Arkovian fashion. It was a humiliating, amateur mistake that threatened to make her appear entirely foolish in front of the one man she needed to impress. Hissing quietly in annoyance, she immediately forced her features back into a mask of serene indifference. "It appears I must offer a further amendment, Duke Soren. I am injured, and therefore cannot grace the floor with you tonight. However, had we danced, it would have signified your acceptance of my unspoken proposal... and as we both know, some lords in this empire require a suitable wife far more urgently than others."
Duke Soren’s left eye twitched almost imperceptibly, a subtle reaction that would have gone unnoticed by anyone else, but to Sigrid, it unlocked a sudden, jarring fragment of her judgment sight. A vivid vision flashed behind her eyelids: she saw a stern, elderly matriarch shouting fiercely at the Duke within the stone walls of a distant northern fortress, her voice echoing with the absolute necessity of him securing a highborn wife to preserve their northern autonomy.
Yet as Sigrid tried to peer deeper into the vision, she felt an oppressive, massive weight blocking her sight, a significant, ancient terror that her magic was actively avoiding by substituting the lesser memory of the shouting woman.
She looked sharply at Soren, her mind racing with a sudden, profound confusion as she wondered what immense fear lay buried within his soul, and how his sheer willpower was strong enough to instinctively resist the full depth of her sight. Shaking the distraction from her mind, she waited, knowing that while she did not strictly need him for her personal revenge, an alliance with the north would guarantee her success as it was more of separate province and not strictly monitored by the crown.
The silence between them stretched until, without a single word of warning, Sigrid felt a pair of large, calloused hands—far warmer than she ever anticipated—wrap firmly around her delicate fingers. Her breath hitched in her throat as the towering, formidable warlord deliberately lowered his massive frame, sinking onto one knee before her in a traditional gesture of absolute courtship.
A dark, dangerous smirk played upon his lips as he looked up at her shocked expression. "I accept your intriguing proposal, Lady Sigrid," he murmured clearly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the quieted ballroom as he leaned forward to press a lingering, respectful kiss against the back of her hand. The surrounding nobility erupted into a fresh wave of hushed whispers, their eyes darting between the kneeling warlord and the royal dais, where an oppressive, suffocating wave of jealousy was visibly radiating from Prince Ragnar. The heir to the throne looked as though he wished to execute the duke on the spot, his golden facade completely ruined by the realization that the woman who had rejected him had just been claimed by his greatest rival.
Soren rose gracefully to his feet, and before Sigrid could even begin to process the sudden shift in momentum, he bent down and effortlessly scooped her up into his powerful arms. A small, involuntary squeak escaped her lips as her crimson skirts billowed around them, her hands instinctively grabbing his broad shoulders for balance. "You really are an incredibly cunning, manipulative little creature," Soren whispered against her ear, his hot breath brushing her skin before he turned his attention toward the imperial throne.
In a much louder, authoritative tone that brooked no argument, he addressed the stunned onlookers: "The court must find its entertainment elsewhere tonight. I am taking Lady Sigrid Beaufort as my wedded wife."
With massive, unyielding strides, the northern duke carried her directly toward the high dais where the King and Queen sat in stunned silence, their mouths slightly agape at the sheer audacity of a marriage alliance being forged through such scandalous means. Halting before the rulers of Arkovia, Soren did not bow; instead, his voice took on a sharp, almost rude edge as he commanded the crown. "I expect the imperial court to formally acknowledge this union without delay."
Sigrid watched from his arms as the Queen’s eyes flashed with an intense, hostile hatred before she offered a stiff, reluctant nod of royal confirmation. As Soren turned and began walking directly out of the grand ballroom, Prince Ragnar suddenly stepped into their path, his face twisted in a tight, furious anger as he glared at the man carrying his obsession. "How dare you lay hands upon her, Aethermor," the prince hissed, but Soren merely ignored him, stepping past the royal heir without a single word. Through the parting doors, Sigrid watched as Maria quickly rushed forward to soothe the prince’s wounded ego, wrapping her arms around his trembling frame. That is it, Maria, Sigrid thought with a dark, satisfied malice as the edges of her consciousness began to rapidly fray, her head falling heavily against Soren’s sturdy, warm chest with a quiet thud. Become his woman... and taste the nightmare I suffered. With that final thought, the grand lights of the palace faded entirely, and everything went dark.
