Chapter 75: Chapter 75: I Just Got Lucky Too

"My last name is Li, and I’m currently at the Dolphin Bay Hotel in the city," the man on the other end of the line said after confirming the kitten’s identity. "You mentioned you’re a staff member at Sister Zhang’s Charity Organization. Shouldn’t you be off work by now? Where should we meet?"

Yun Zhen looked at Brother Zhao.

Zhao Peng glanced at his watch and replied, "Mr. Li, I’m actually still working overtime at the office. If it’s convenient for you, I can send you our address so we can meet here. The Dolphin Bay Hotel is twenty minutes away at most."

"All right, I’ll be there soon," Mr. Li agreed.

Zhao Peng shared his location with him.

Yun Zhen let out a deep breath. Her large, bright eyes stared at the little cat licking its paws by the heating pipe. "This is thirty thousand yuan," she thought.

"MEOW—" The kitten rolled over and gave Yun Zhen a lazy glance.

Hanging up the phone, Brother Zhao clenched his fists, looking utterly thrilled. He didn’t hold back his praise. "Yun Zhen, your luck is unbelievable! Last time you won two hundred pounds of pork in the supermarket lottery, and now you’ve found a kitten with a thirty-thousand-yuan online reward. If word gets out, everyone is going to be green with envy!"

Thrilled as she was, Yun Zhen feigned modesty. "It was just a stroke of dumb luck." As soon as the words left her mouth, she felt a bit sheepish. Thinking about it carefully, her luck truly was frighteningly good.

Zhao Peng couldn’t help but envy her as well. "Let’s head to my office first. Bring the kitten along, and we’ll hand it over to Mr. Li when he arrives."

Yun Zhen nodded happily. She followed Brother Zhao downstairs with the kitten in her arms and hopped into his black Beetle to head to his office.

A few minutes later, Zhao Peng parked the car. "We’re here."

Yun Zhen hadn’t expected Brother Zhao’s workplace to be so close to her dorm. Once inside the office, the two of them waited for Mr. Li to come and pick up the cat.

Yun Zhen waited with bated breath. After what felt like an eternity, a well-groomed man in his thirties walked through the door.

Zhao Peng stepped forward to greet him. "Hello, Mr. Li. I’m Zhao Peng, a staff member at Sister Zhang’s Charity Organization."

Though out of breath, Mr. Li wore a jubilant expression. "Hello, Mr. Zhao. I’m here to bring Ruirui home."

"This is Yun Zhen, one of the kids from our organization," Zhao Peng introduced. "She’s the one who found your cat in her residential complex."

Yun Zhen offered a polite greeting. "Hello, Mr. Li."

Yun Zhen recounted the story of how she had stumbled upon and rescued the kitten to Zhao Peng, who then relayed the details to Mr. Li.

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Mr. Li thanked her profusely. "Thank you so much for helping me find Ruirui, little one."

He was carrying premium yogurt in one hand and a large gift bag of branded snacks in the other, along with a box of Longjing tea. The yogurt and snacks were for the child who had found Ruirui, while the tea was for the staff member, Mr. Zhao, who had contacted him.

He placed the gifts on the desk. "Please take the yogurt and snacks, child. I didn’t know what you liked to eat, so I just bought a little bit of everything. And this tea is for you, Mr. Zhao. Thank you so much for reaching out to me."

"You shouldn’t have spent so much, Mr. Li," Yun Zhen said.

"You’re far too kind, Mr. Li," Zhao Peng added.

Mr. Li waved a hand and took a deep breath. "You two have no idea how important Ruirui is to our family."

He went on to explain the whole story. "Ever since he was born, my son was diagnosed with congenital autism, and he later developed mild depression. He doesn’t like interacting with kids his age or being around pets, and his relationship with us parents has always been rather distant. He usually just sits around in a daze. As parents, it broke our hearts to see him like that.

"Ruirui was the very first gift he ever asked for. I bought her from a pet store to keep him company. To our surprise, with Ruirui around, my son not only started talking more, but he also smiled a lot more. Even his doctor called it a miracle.

"A couple of days ago, Ruirui wasn’t looking too well, so I took her to the vet. While I was there, I took a call from a client, and she somehow managed to slip away. Without his playmate, my son refused to eat. I was dying of regret. Thank goodness Ruirui has been found.

"So, these gifts are really nothing!"

Listening to his explanation, Yun Zhen realized that Mr. Li’s son was ill, withdrawn, and only opened up with the kitten’s companionship. As a mother herself, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for the child she had never even met.

Even Zhao Peng sighed with emotion. "A parent’s love knows no bounds. It truly hasn’t been easy for you, Mr. Li."

Mr. Li finally revealed a relaxed smile, as if a heavy burden had been lifted from his shoulders. "Exactly. That’s why I am so incredibly grateful to you both."

He pulled a thick envelope from his coat pocket and solemnly offered it to Yun Zhen.

"Here is the thirty thousand yuan. Please accept it, little one!"

Yun Zhen wanted to politely decline. However, faced with such a massive sum of money, she completely forgot how to be modest. She stared blankly at the envelope, too embarrassed to even raise her hand to take it.

Zhao Peng spoke up tactfully. "Mr. Li, you likely know a bit about the backgrounds of the children in our organization. Logically, since you’ve already brought yogurt, snacks, and other thank-you gifts, we shouldn’t let you spend any more money. However, this sum is incredibly important for this child’s future development. Since she is too shy to accept it, I will brazenly accept it on her behalf."

He added, "To be completely honest, I am this child’s nominal guardian within the organization."

Mr. Li nodded emphatically. "Mr. Zhao, this is a promise I made online. No matter who found our Ruirui, I would pay this reward. Since the child is too shy to accept it, it’s perfectly reasonable for you, as her guardian, to take it on her behalf to support her future."

Sister Zhang’s Charity Organization was not only well-known in the city but also ranked as one of the top, most reputable philanthropic organizations in the country. It even enjoyed a considerable reputation internationally.

Mr. Li had looked them up before coming. The staff here were all highly educated talents from prestigious universities. Since its inception, there had never been a single report of misconduct among the staff. Mr. Li was confident that something like embezzling funds would never happen here.

Moreover, doing business meant he had met all kinds of people. No matter how someone tried to disguise themselves, they couldn’t escape his sharp eyes. Mr. Zhao naturally exuded an aura of unyielding righteousness!

Zhao Peng accepted the envelope with both hands. "I thank you for your generous financial support on the child’s behalf," he said softly.

Yun Zhen chimed in, "Thank you, Mr. Li."

Seeing him accept the money, Mr. Li breathed a sigh of relief. "Good child, this is what you deserve.

"Mr. Zhao, I should be taking Ruirui back now. My son heard that she was found and is eagerly waiting for me to bring her home. If he doesn’t see Ruirui, he probably still won’t eat dinner tonight.

"Given her condition, I also need to take her to the pet hospital for a bath and a checkup."

Mr. Li cradled the kitten in his arms, holding her like a precious, long-lost treasure.

Zhao Peng walked him to the door. "Mr. Li, the child is what’s most important. Have a safe trip back."

"Mr. Zhao, let’s grab a drink together sometime if the opportunity arises," Mr. Li said with a smile.

Zhao Peng nodded, returning the smile. "Absolutely."

Mr. Li drove off with the kitten.

Zhao Peng then handed the envelope over to Yun Zhen.

"Take the money back to your dorm for now. In a couple of days, I’ll see if I can get you a bank card to deposit it. I’ll also submit a request to management to upgrade your communicator’s system.

"Once it has a payment function, you’ll be able to use your money anytime without having to worry about the safety risks of carrying around a wad of cash."
