Chapter 89 - 86: Fiery Golden Eyes
Chapter 89: Chapter 86: Fiery Golden Eyes
Vice General Du’s professional smile didn’t waver. "Is that the general’s wish? I will report this to General Song!"
Wilson was speechless. ’How did this become my idea?’
’Is that what I meant?’
’They were clearly the ones who went too far, so how did it turn into me insisting on making an enemy of the Song Family Army?’
But... since the other party had already taken it that way, he didn’t feel like explaining himself.
In any case, the grudge with the Song Family Army was now set.
Without confirming or denying it, he just gave a cold snort, turned around, and got in his vehicle to leave.
He was forced to swallow his anger, seething with a rage he couldn’t unleash.
Only after Wilson and his men had vanished did Captain Lu relax his frayed nerves. "Vice General Du, thank you for that... but... what are you doing here?"
"I was in the area to pick up some cargo when I got a call from Young Master Song. He heard that you and Miss Chen Xing had been lured into a dangerous trap by the Military Brigade Commander, so he sent me to see if I could help."
’Though, it seems I came for nothing,’ he thought.
’Judging by Chen Xing’s unconcerned expression, she didn’t seem to have any problems at all. Besides, the enemy only had two hundred men?’
"Are those trucks of yours full of supplies?" Chen Xing made no attempt to hide her greed as she eyed Vice General Du’s military vehicles.
Vice General Du was at a loss for words. ’Why do I feel like a piece of meat being eyed by a wolf?’
"Yes!" He didn’t try to hide it.
’Probably couldn’t hide it even if I wanted to!’
Captain Lu was speechless.
Now it was his turn to be unsettled.
’So, you’re telling me all these trucks are full of supplies, and there are hardly any soldiers?’
Thinking back to the look on Wilson’s face as he was intimidated into leaving, he couldn’t help but wipe the sweat from his brow.
’Damn, so he was just bluffing? He only came with a few men?’
’The nerve of him!’
’If Wilson hadn’t fallen for it and a fight had broken out... He didn’t even want to imagine it.’
"Miss Chen Xing, Young Master Song asked me to give you a message. If you’re willing, you’re always welcome in the Capital City!" Vice General Du had already noticed the ground littered with zombie corpses.
He could roughly guess how many Chen Xing had dealt with on her own.
’This woman... she seems to have gotten much stronger since she saved Young Master Song.’
’No wonder Young Master Song is so set on recruiting her into the Song Family Army.’
However, he could tell from her expression that she had no intention of going, so he turned to Captain Lu. "Captain Lu, Young Master Song also said that if you wish to join the Song Family Army, you are also welcome at any time!" They all thought highly of Captain Lu’s character.
But after what had happened with the Military Brigade Commander, he suspected Captain Lu was no longer in the mood to join the Song Family Army.
As expected, Captain Lu politely declined. "Thank Young Master Song for his kind offer, but if I return to the Capital City now, it will cause friction between the Song Family Army and the Military Department!"
On their way here after disembarking, Chen Xing had told him about a good place outside Hualai City that was looking for people.
He trusted Chen Xing, and he trusted that anyone she recommended wouldn’t be a mistake, so he had agreed without hesitation.
Now that he had a place to go, there was no need to force a move to the Capital City.
Staying away from all that trouble was the wise move.
Of course... he had also asked for the opinions of Xiao Wu and the others, and they had all agreed.
In the Military Department, they were the vanguard, always sent to the most dangerous places. After leaving all that behind, who wouldn’t want to live a peaceful life for once?
Hearing that Captain Lu had found a new place, Vice General Du didn’t press the matter.
After a brief exchange about their respective situations, Vice General Du departed.
He still had to go back and report to his superiors.
Chen Xing and Captain Lu then led their team onward toward the airport.
What was normally a three-hour journey took them just over two, as they walked at a brisk pace.
The plane that should have been parked on the deserted airport runway was gone. Only a thick fog swirled around the area.
It was as if no plane had ever landed there. The ground was covered in a thick layer of damp dust.
"Wasn’t our plane parked right here?" Xiao Wu asked in astonishment, looking around.
But the fog was too thick; there was no sign of a plane anywhere in his field of vision.
Without the plane, even if they found cars, the journey would take at least three to five days—and that was assuming the roads were clear.
If they ran into blockades, they would waste even more time.
Chen Xing was certain their plane had landed here. Its disappearance meant it had either been recalled by the Military Brigade Commander or sabotaged by Liang Yuncheng.
She pointed into the distance. "There’s a plane over there. I think it belongs to Song Yiguo!"
Even from so far away, Chen Xing could clearly make out the Song Family insignia on its fuselage.
Captain Lu looked where Chen Xing was pointing, but all he could see was a vast expanse of white fog. "Vice General Du and his men haven’t left yet?"
"I guess not?" Chen Xing wasn’t sure either, as she couldn’t see anyone around. "If we take the Song Family Army’s SF Express plane, we’ll have to go to the Capital City!" She was somewhat reluctant.
After all, it was an unfamiliar place, one she hadn’t even been to in her previous life.
Captain Lu felt the same.
He, too, was reluctant to go to the Capital City.
If he went back, he would inevitably run into the Military Brigade Commander. When that happened, would he be able to contain his rage?
To him, even confronting the Military Brigade Commander felt pointless.
There was no point in demanding an explanation from someone lower than an animal. The man might not even give one, and even if he did, it would surely be insincere.
"Let’s go over and check it out first. Maybe... the Song Family Army needs help?" Captain Lu took the lead, heading in the direction Chen Xing had pointed. Even though he couldn’t see anything, he simply trusted her.
Vice General Du had returned almost three hours before them. For him to still be here, he might have run into trouble.
After walking for nearly a kilometer, Captain Lu and the others finally saw a Song Family Army military aircraft.
They were completely in awe.
Chen Xing’s vision wasn’t just good; it was like she had eagle eyes.
Seeing something so far away through a dense fog with less than five meters of visibility was incredible!
The plane was parked on the runway. From the outside, nothing seemed out of place.
But... as they got closer, they could see that the plane’s cabin door was wide open.
Captain Lu made a hushing gesture. Treading lightly, he was the first one up the boarding stairs.
Chen Xing didn’t follow him up, instead inspecting the area around the plane.
On the runway, which was covered in damp dust, a few uneven tire tracks led from the aircraft to the adjacent asphalt road. The tracks circled around once before heading off in the direction of the North Sea.
’...’ ’Could Vice General Du have been captured by Wilson’s men?’
Captain Lu came down to join her. "There’s nothing on the plane but two empty vehicles. Vice General Du and his men are gone!"
"Get some people to drive these vehicles. We’re going after them!" Chen Xing decided on the spot to attempt a rescue.
’Rescuing Song Yiguo’s men will definitely come with a reward!’
’I can’t possibly pass up such a rare opportunity!’
Soon, the group was driving the Song Family Army’s military vehicles toward the pier where Wilson had previously cornered them.
The journey that had taken them nearly three hours on foot was a mere twenty-minute drive.
The shore was still shrouded in a layer of white fog. The damp air carried a foul, corrosive smell that stung the nostrils.
The smell was even stronger after they got out of the vehicles. They could only cover their mouths and noses with their sleeves, but it did little to block the stench.
Unable to see their surroundings clearly, everyone had to spread out.
Chen Xing walked to the very edge of the shore.
The United States military ship was still in its original position. On deck, hundreds of figures were faintly visible.
The outer ring was clearly composed of United States sailors, and in their midst, a dozen or so soldiers were vaguely visible, completely surrounded.
