Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse
Chapter 60: Migratory Clan
Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Migratory Clan
Chen Xing was currently on the balcony of the apartment next to He Yu’an’s.
After seeing the two of them go back inside, she didn’t return to the top floor. Instead, she ran through the stairwell to the unit next to where Hao Wenli and the other woman were staying.
Since He Yu’an was more familiar with the Research Institute, she would probably report back to them.
She had only been hiding on the balcony for a short while when He Yu’an came out with her phone.
She heard their entire conversation.
Even though the electronic voice on the other end was faint, her hearing was incredibly sharp, and she caught every single word.
’So... I don’t even have a name at the Research Institute, just a number: 00007? Just as I thought, treated like a lab rat.’
’And the most ridiculous part is, He Yu’an’s boss thinks she’s the one who killed the zombie dogs?’
’Why didn’t she take a closer look inside the zombie dogs’ heads?’
’Not only did I kill the zombie dogs, but I also took their Crystal Cores.’
However, she believed the Research Institute would soon discover that Crystal Cores could enhance superpowers, driving their prices sky-high.
Of course, in her past life, they had waited a month before announcing that Crystal Cores could enhance superpowers. That news had emboldened everyone who used to hide from zombies, encouraging them to hunt the creatures instead.
After all, getting just one meant a good price, which would cover food and living expenses.
’I have to do something before that happens.’
’It’s a good thing He Yu’an didn’t admit she wasn’t the one who killed the zombie dogs!’
After they exchanged some useless words about keeping a close watch and then hung up, Chen Xing left the balcony and went back to her own apartment.
’Sparing He Yu’an’s life was the right choice. At least I finally learned my designation: 00007.’
’But what’s the logic behind the numbering for 00007?’
’Am I the seventh test subject?’
’Or is it just a random number?’
’Or... does the total number of test subjects reach five digits?’
’I’ll have to dig into these things slowly.’
Back in her apartment, she unlocked her phone and opened the short-video app. She saw that the view count on her last video had already exploded.
The comments were flooding in as if they were free.
She quickly started scrolling through the comments.
’Maybe it’s because my eyes are good?’ Her finger flicked up the screen, and the comments flew by, every single one registering in her sight.
About halfway through, one comment caught her attention.
The user threatened: "Bloodbath at XX Tower tonight!"
It was even signed: the Migratory Clan.
A stream of comments followed below it.
—Oh my god, is my goddess about to disappear?
—Wherever the Migratory Clan goes lately, don’t people and all their belongings vanish with them?
—I bet it’s real!
—Does this mean I won’t see my waifu after today?
—Nooo! Please spare her!
—Look at the times we’re in. She eats like a landlord’s daughter. Who else would they target?
Chen Xing frowned.
’The Migratory Clan?’
She remembered them.
In her past life, there was a group like that near Hualai City that specialized in raiding other tribes. Whether it was a lone person or an entire team, anyone they targeted would vanish overnight.
What was most infuriating was that this Migratory Clan was incredibly arrogant, always leaving behind notes or some other kind of message before an attack.
They also frequently posted horrific videos online, like murders... Later, they went so far as to turn living people into food and display it on tables.
In her past life, the Capital City had dispatched troops from nearby safe zones to eliminate them, but they were never found, and the matter was eventually dropped.
Chen Xing once had a friend who had escaped Hualai City with her. After being separated during a zombie attack, they had finally managed to get in touch. But who would have known that on the very day they were talking on the phone, her friend was abducted by the Migratory Clan, never to be heard from again.
She still had two days before leaving for the North Sea.
’Since I don’t have anything important to do, I might as well make a trip over there and check out the situation. Maybe I can save that girl I met on the road in my past life from her fate.’
Chen Xing ate an extremely lavish "earthen pot feast" and, as usual, posted a video of it.
After eating, she went to bed.
Once she got to the enemy’s territory, she probably wouldn’t have time to sleep.
At around two in the morning, Chen Xing heard an alarm go off.
’Hmm, it’ll take them a while to get the door open. I’ll keep sleeping!’
Before going to sleep, she had already stored everything in her space, leaving out only a bed and a backpack.
Before long, she heard someone trying to break down the door to the stairwell.
’Unsurprisingly, Hao Wenli and He Yu’an have already been captured.’
’It’s my turn to serve myself up on a platter.’
Before heading out, she took a shower, changed into a clean set of clothes, stored her bed away, and then left with a large backpack on.
’A backpack should at least look like it has something in it.’
When her elevator reached the first-floor lobby, she was immediately surrounded by a group of people.
Hao Wenli’s eyes were red as she shot Chen Xing a hostile glare.
’It seemed like whenever Chen Xing was involved, she was destined for misfortune.’
’First it was a biker gang, and now she’s attracted the Migratory Clan.’
She had heard recently that the Migratory Clan was even more insane than the bikers. This time, they were probably in real danger.
She shot Chen Xing another vicious glare.
’You have so much food you can eat however you want, but couldn’t you be a little more low-key about it?’
’Showing off in front of the camera all day, luring people here... and now I have to suffer the consequences with her.’
Her heart ached as she glanced at her own small bag of food.
Her boss had sent people to deliver this to her, and she had been so reluctant to eat it, scrimping and saving every bite. Now, it was all going to be taken away again.
Chen Xing was very cooperative.
When they told her to lead them upstairs, she obediently did so.
Seeing that the apartment was completely empty, the man leading them, who was called Ma Zha, became furious.
However, seeing as the three women were all rather good-looking, he suppressed his anger. "Take them back with us!"
’Damn it, I hope the boss likes them!’
Several vehicles were parked outside. Chen Xing and the other two were loaded into the back of a small truck.
The cargo bay was enclosed, and it became stuffy the moment the door was shut.
Chen Xing placed her hand on the wall of the truck and immediately sensed what was happening outside.
The scenery outside flowed past like a video recording as they drove through the streets toward an unknown destination.
It was pitch-black inside the truck. Sitting in a corner, Hao Wenli felt her entire body go limp.
’What kind of rotten luck did I have to end up suffering like this?’
’One look and you could tell the Migratory Clan were bad news. I don’t know if we’ll be able to escape safely.’
"Chen Xing, you’re the one who brought these people here, aren’t you? They don’t look like good people." She had heard that this group had come looking for Chen Xing after seeing her on the streaming platform.
The blame for this whole affair lay with Chen Xing’s love for showing off, which drew attention and got her targeted by the Migratory Clan.
"If you want to blame someone, blame the person who left the address in the video comments."
Hao Wenli: "..." It was true, she was the one who had left the address.
’But as they say, flies don’t bite a seamless egg. If Chen Xing hadn’t been showing off her food all day, why would they have come looking?’
Her eyes, full of resentment, stared in Chen Xing’s direction.
’I don’t know what’s so great about her that the boss would pay such a high price for me to get close to her.’
"Don’t blame some innocent person for leaving the address. If you didn’t love showing off so much, trying to get famous by posting mukbangs, would these people have shown up? Anan and I wouldn’t have been dragged into this. What did we ever do to deserve this?" she said, her voice full of grievance.
He Yu’an agreed with that sentiment.
She had only accepted a mission to get close to Chen Xing and observe her every move.
But she never imagined she would get entangled with the Migratory Clan.
She knew a little about this Migratory Clan.
Before the apocalypse, they were an underground organization in Hualai City. On the surface, they engaged in some minor illicit activities, but nothing that amounted to serious crimes.
But anyone with inside knowledge knew that the Migratory Clan specialized in kidnapping and extortion, with ransoms starting in the eight figures.
After the apocalypse began, they upgraded their kidnapping and extortion business.
