Chapter 58: Attack at the Research Institute
Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Attack at the Research Institute
The sudden light was blinding, and Hao Wenli and He Yu’an instinctively covered their eyes.
When they slowly lowered their hands, they saw a large black dog, drool dripping from its mouth.
It was a terrifying sight. Its head was abnormally large, and its gaping maw revealed sharp fangs. It was crouched, poised to lunge at Chen Xing.
When the lights flashed on, Chen Xing didn’t cover her eyes. Instead, she focused her attention on her surroundings.
In an instant, she sensed something appear within a two-meter radius of her.
Although her vision was temporarily blurred, she still pinpointed its direction with accuracy.
When her eyes adjusted, she saw it clearly: a zombie dog, black from head to tail.
Chen Xing: "..." ’How could I forget? The zombie dogs here are being controlled.’
’As long as the people from the Research Institute order them not to attack Hao Wenli and the others, the zombie dog will single me out.’
Chen Xing’s hand went to her waist, and in the next instant, her knife was at the zombie dog’s face.
Before the zombie dog could even react, the knife pierced its head, and it collapsed to the ground.
Hao Wenli and the other two: "..."
They hadn’t even seen how Chen Xing moved.
’The zombie dog must have been slow, unable to comprehend Chen Xing’s incredible skill.’
Even Chen Xing was slightly surprised that she could kill the zombie dog in one hit.
’To think my abilities have improved so much in such a short time.’
The last time she killed a zombie dog, she had to use all her strength with the intent of a single fatal blow. This time, it was effortless—no different from killing an ordinary zombie.
"What is that thing?" Hao Wenli asked, staring in shock at the dead zombie dog on the floor.
It was the first time she had ever seen something so horrifying.
"A zombie dog," Chen Xing said, looking up to observe Hao Wenli’s expression.
’As someone from the Research Institute, surely she’s seen these things before?’
"A zombie dog?" Hao Wenli wanted to get a closer look, but she couldn’t summon the courage. It was just too terrifying. "How can something so scary exist?"
In contrast, He Yu’an’s expression was much calmer than Hao Wenli’s.
Chen Xing pretended not to notice and walked over to open the door to the director’s office.
The lights were on inside, but the room was empty.
The furnishings were mostly the same as when she had come to kill Cheng Fang last time, except the filing cabinet was gone.
"No one’s here..." Hao Wenli peeked in, looking slightly disappointed by the emptiness.
Seeing the lights on, He Laiyu grew bolder. She walked straight inside and began to look around.
He Yu’an tried to stop her uneasily. "Aunt... we probably shouldn’t just go in."
"It’s fine!" He Laiyu wasn’t worried at all. "Look at you, being so timid."
’Besides, Chen Xing opened the door and came in first. If someone shows up, I can just blame it all on her.’
With that, she started rummaging through the desk drawers.
After finishing with the desk, she moved on to the drawers in the wall cabinet.
As she stood on her toes and opened the topmost drawer, a faint scraping sound echoed.
Chen Xing’s hearing was sharp. She immediately took a few steps back, retreating to the doorway.
As the sound grew louder, the wall in front of He Laiyu suddenly split open, the two halves sliding apart.
She stared, a mixture of terror and anticipation on her face.
From the darkness, a pair of scarlet eyes suddenly appeared.
Terrified, He Laiyu stumbled back two steps and fell to the floor.
The eyes moved forward swiftly, reaching her in a moment. A fanged mouth opened wide and bit down.
He Laiyu cried out twice in pain, turning to her niece, who was closest, for help.
But He Yu’an, the niece she had relied on, gave her a single, cold glance before turning and bolting for the door.
Hao Wenli had already started running, a step ahead of her.
There was some distance to the elevator, so they ran with all their might, terrified the zombie dog would catch them.
But no matter how fast they ran, they couldn’t outrun the zombie dog.
’It’s over!’
A chill ran down their spines. They looked at Chen Xing, who was standing by the elevator, with envy and jealousy.
To their surprise, the zombie dog didn’t attack them. It ran past them and leaped toward Chen Xing.
Chen Xing had expected as much. It wasn’t strange at all. With a flick of her wrist, her knife fell, and the zombie dog was dead.
She then skillfully retrieved the Crystal Cores from the heads of the two zombie dogs.
Hao Wenli, He Yu’an: "..." ’What are you supposed to do with those things?’
’Keep them as souvenirs?’
Seeing the elevator doors open, Chen Xing stepped inside.
Hao Wenli, catching up, was puzzled. "Aren’t you curious about what’s behind that cabinet?" She was dying of curiosity.
She hadn’t seen the mastermind behind the scenes since she got the mission. Maybe he had been in there just now.
But even though the secret door was open and Chen Xing could easily kill the zombie dogs, she showed no intention of going inside.
Chen Xing’s reply was just two cold words: "Not interested."
’It’s obvious the zombie dogs are only targeting me. Why would I walk right into a trap?’
Hao Wenli: "..." No matter how curious she was, there was nothing she could do.
If Chen Xing wasn’t going in, how would she dare to?
"You killed my aunt!" He Yu’an, who had been silent, suddenly became hysterical.
Chen Xing: "..." ’Her reaction time is something else.’
’A moment ago, I saw her make no move to save her aunt. In fact, she ran away pretty damn fast.’
"Anan, don’t say that about Chen Xing..." Hao Wenli immediately made her position clear, siding with Chen Xing. "It had nothing to do with her. If your aunt hadn’t opened the secret door herself, how would the zombie dog have gotten out?"
"If she hadn’t insisted on going in, my aunt wouldn’t have gone in either! She wouldn’t have been in danger, and she wouldn’t have died! WAH... My poor aunt..." After a few sobs, He Yu’an seemed to compose herself. "I’m sorry. I’m just so upset that I couldn’t save my aunt."
’She didn’t even try to save her, did she?’
’To abandon your own aunt to die and then put on a show... I wonder who she’s performing for.’
Even Hao Wenli was speechless.
Chen Xing said nothing either.
By now, the elevator had reached the first floor, but it didn’t stop. It continued its descent.
"Why isn’t the elevator stopping?" Hao Wenli frantically mashed the ’open door’ button.
The elevator continued downward.
Chen Xing glanced up at the security camera, then leaped and shattered it.
’The elevator is under their control, but at least I can destroy the camera.’
Hao Wenli: "..." ’Did she just piss off the boss?’
’What do I do? I’m so scared.’
Compared to Hao Wenli, He Yu’an’s expression was even more horrified, as if she knew what terrors lay below.
She clenched her jaw, pressing her body tightly against the elevator wall and gripping the handrail for dear life.
DING...
The elevator finally stopped. It was on the third basement level.
When the doors opened, Hao Wenli was practically plastered to He Yu’an’s back.
As scared as she was, she didn’t dare cling to Chen Xing.
They hadn’t interacted much, but she knew Chen Xing didn’t like being touched.
Chen Xing maintained a safe distance from the elevator doors. As soon as they opened, she stepped out.
The two young women behind her were already drenched in sweat. They stared fixedly ahead before finally following her out.
’It seems safer to stick with Chen Xing right now, right?’
After all, Chen Xing could kill zombie dogs with ease.
Little did they know, Chen Xing had no intention of protecting them. In fact, she wanted them to experience for themselves what it felt like to face countless zombie dogs.
