Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse
Chapter 292 - 289: He Thought She Committed Suicide
Chapter 292: Chapter 289: He Thought She Committed Suicide
The weather turned cold in an instant, the temperature plummeting like a descending elevator.
In just a few minutes, Chen Xing was chilled to the bone.
She quickly rummaged through her backpack, hoping for a padded jacket or something similar.
The last time she’d used her backpack, she had pulled a down jacket out of her spatial storage, so... ’It seems I didn’t pack one in the backpack itself, did I?’
She emptied the entire backpack, figuring she might as well see what was inside.
At the bottom of the pack, she found a vacuum-sealed down quilt.
Among several bottles of mineral water, she also found a bottle of spring water.
That was a pleasant surprise.
This spring water was precious. She couldn’t use it unless it was a last resort; it was a lifesaver.
She took out the down quilt, placed it on top of the documents, and wrapped herself tightly in it.
At first, it felt quite warm, but as the temperature continued to drop, the quilt didn’t seem to be doing much anymore.
With no other choice, she wrapped herself in the quilt, piled the documents beside her, and started a fire to keep warm.
The temperature rose significantly, and the room warmed up.
Chen Xing lay down right there and fell asleep.
She didn’t know how long she’d slept when a burst of fighting sounds woke her.
It seemed to be coming from outside the Research Institute.
’Maybe there’s someone out there!’
Chen Xing immediately left the room, went next door, and peered out the window.
On the pitch-black street below, a man in a black mink fur coat was surrounded by dozens of zombies.
Not far from him, a motorcycle lay on its side.
The back of the motorcycle was laden with bags, with racks on both sides and more things piled on top.
Not wanting to miss this rare chance to see another person, Chen Xing shouted down, "Wait for me..."
After shouting, she ran back to her room, slung on her backpack, and, still wrapped in the quilt, dashed downstairs.
On the third floor, she ran into zombies coming up.
Her superpower was currently fully charged, but she didn’t want to waste it recklessly.
She chose to jump out the window.
When Chen Xing leaped from the third-floor window, she saw the man in the mink fur coat looking completely astonished.
He thought she was committing suicide.
Jumping from the third floor was a death wish.
But to his surprise, she was perfectly fine and came running toward him.
"Are you planning to kill all the zombies, or run?" Chen Xing needed to know his plan.
To her surprise, Brother Mink Fur was once again stunned. After a moment, he managed a single word: "Run..."
’Kill all the zombies?’
’What is she thinking?’
’Can you even kill all the zombies?’
’If I hadn’t been passing through here and gotten knocked down in a zombie attack, would I be wasting my time here?’
"Okay!" With a definite answer, Chen Xing knew what to do.
"I’ll hold off the zombies. You go start the motorcycle!" As Chen Xing spoke, she had already used her Earth Ability to block most of the zombies.
Seeing this, Brother Mink Fur immediately turned and ran to the motorcycle, but despite his efforts, he couldn’t get it upright.
The bike was fine normally, but once it fell over, it was nearly impossible for one person to lift it.
After putting up several more earth walls, Chen Xing ran toward Brother Mink Fur. With a simple reach and lift, she easily righted the motionless motorcycle.
Brother Mink Fur was stunned but hadn’t forgotten to escape.
He jumped on the bike and quickly started the engine. "Get on!"
He never expected to meet such an amazing girl—a girl wrapped in a quilt, no less—who could escape a horde of zombies so easily.
These days, everyone was afraid of Advanced Zombies, so very few people went out.
Especially at night, no one dared to venture out.
He had no choice!
He had gone out this time to look for medicine.
He had finally found some and wanted to rush back to the camp to save someone, which was why he had risked traveling at night.
To get to the camp faster, he had also risked cutting through Hualai City. Who would have thought he’d run into a zombie horde?
The motorcycle was reasonably fast, and with Chen Xing periodically throwing up earth walls behind them, they quickly shook off the zombies.
The biting wind lashed at their faces.
Chen Xing was thinly dressed. Although she was covered by the down quilt, her ankles and face were exposed, and she was freezing.
But there was nothing she could do about it.
She could only stoically endure the cold and press on.
Fortunately, not long after leaving Hualai City, they stopped in the underground parking garage of a small residential complex with a few buildings.
Brother Mink Fur was cautious. He first went outside to check that no zombies had followed them before leading Chen Xing through a wall-like door in the garage and into the building.
From the outside, the building looked derelict, with few of its glass windows intact.
Inside, however, was another world entirely.
To survive, the inhabitants had kept the exterior looking uninhabited while partitioning the inside into a large living space.
Everyone lived together in this large space.
Of course, it was also divided into floors.
Married couples, for instance, were assigned small, private rooms.
Brother Mink Fur led Chen Xing into a workshop on the second floor.
This was the place where everyone gathered for meetings during emergencies or major events.
Chen Xing was told to sit on a chair in the middle of the room.
Before long, Brother Mink Fur returned with a man in his forties who seemed to be a manager. "Brother Zhao, this is the Chen Xing I told you about!"
Unsure of what he’d been told, Brother Zhao looked at Chen Xing with deep skepticism in his eyes.
He found it hard to believe that such a frail-looking girl could possess such abilities.
"I hear you saved Little Leopard?"
"We saved each other, I’d say!" Chen Xing didn’t want to take all the credit.
’If it weren’t for Brother Leopard Skin, I’d still be shivering in that dilapidated room at the Research Institute.’
’A humble girl!’
Seeing Chen Xing’s modesty, Brother Zhao thought she seemed like a decent girl.
"In that case, you can stay! However..." Brother Zhao’s expression turned stern. "If you do even one thing that harms our camp, we’ll kick you out without a second thought!"
"Okay!" Chen Xing hadn’t planned on staying here permanently anyway.
However, it was cold outside, and she had no transportation, so her only option was to stay for now and figure things out later.
"Brother Zhao... look at the medicine I brought back. Do you think it can save Aunt Li?" Little Leopard nodded at Chen Xing, then eagerly took out the medicine he had gone through so much trouble to find. "I did my best!"
So many years into the apocalypse, it was a miracle to find any medicine at all. Of course, it was bound to be expired.
"We can only give it a try. What else can we do when we don’t have a Healing Ability User?" Brother Zhao’s voice was full of helplessness.
Healing Ability Users were in extremely high demand. Even if they sold everything in the camp, they could never afford one.
Any discovered Healing Ability User was treated like an emperor. Only the truly powerful factions had the strength to fight over them.
A small, independent camp like theirs had no chance of a Healing Ability User willingly coming over to suffer with them.
Chen Xing didn’t rush to reveal her Healing Ability. Instead, she asked, "Can I go with you to see Aunt Li?"
"You’d better not go!" Little Leopard warned her. "Aunt Li’s body is covered in sores. I’m afraid you won’t be able to handle the sight!"
It was truly horrifying; even he could barely stand to look.
"Maybe I can help?" Chen Xing insisted.
Seeing her persistence, Brother Zhao and Little Leopard didn’t object and led her up a narrow ladder suspended from the floor above.
