Chapter 158: Chapter 155: Still Ignored by the Ugly Freak?
When Song Yiguo shouted "three," the destruction system stopped running.
Chen Xing had already lured a few zombie dogs to her and kicked them down into the pit.
She then used the zombie dogs as stepping stones to get down.
Hao Wenli and the others were left speechless.
They didn’t know what Chen Xing was doing, but somehow, they felt the only right move was to follow her.
So, they all followed her, jumping down into the large pit.
Then, a series of explosions rang out.
A pillar above them was bent by the blasts.
Meanwhile, screams erupted from the area around the destruction system.
Among the people who had come with Xiao Nan, a girl and her boyfriend, oblivious to the situation, jumped directly onto the concrete surface.
Unfortunately, they lost their footing and fell.
The moment the corrosive liquid touched their skin, it spread rapidly across their bodies.
In an instant, more than half of their flesh had been corroded away, exposing bone.
Hao Wenli and the others were terrified. Even as the zombie dogs beneath their feet thrashed and tried to attack, they forced themselves to hold on.
They knew if they fell, they would end up just like those two extras.
Besides, the zombie dogs under their feet were already being dissolved into skeletons.
Just then, another explosion rocked the building, causing an entire section to collapse. It nearly crushed Xiao Nan, who was standing at the very edge.
Xiao Nan’s will to live, however, was strong.
Forgetting all about his girlfriend, he shoved past Cui Ying, Hao Wenli, and the others, scrambling toward Chen Xing’s position—the safest spot.
The zombie dogs were already thrashing wildly, and with Xiao Nan pushing his way through, he nearly knocked Hao Wenli over.
Hao Wenli, ever the selfish one, reached out and yanked another girl in front of her down, using the girl to break her own fall.
The girl let out a blood-curdling scream.
Instantly, the corrosion began to eat away at her fair face.
Her boyfriend reached out to pull her up, but when he saw her horrifying face, he immediately let go.
Chen Xing, meanwhile, remained in the most stable and secure spot, the zombie dog beneath her feet pinned so firmly it couldn’t move an inch.
’So these are what they call friends,’ she thought, finding the whole scene laughable.
Just then, from a doorway in a section that hadn’t collapsed, two men and a woman in white hospital gowns rushed out, jumping directly onto the zombie dogs.
Their movements were swift, their survival instincts apparently making them exceptionally agile.
After a single glance, they all leaped onto the zombie dogs in unison.
This was something Chen Xing hadn’t expected.
’To think there were people so resilient they could escape from a situation like that.’
Just as the three of them landed, another explosion went off.
This one was much louder.
The blast rattled Chen Xing so hard her eardrums ached, and her surroundings fell momentarily silent.
By the time she recovered slightly, the structure above, unable to withstand the continuous explosions, began to shake precariously once more.
’This time, it doesn’t look like it’s going to hold.’
’One more explosion, and it’ll probably give way completely.’
There was no cover above Chen Xing and the others. If the ceiling came down, she would be finished.
And yet, at this critical moment between life and death, the destruction system reactivated, emitting a very faint whir.
’It’s been blown to smithereens and it still works?’
Chen Xing knew if that stuff started spraying, there would be no escape.
"One more blast!" Song Yiguo’s anxious voice came through Chen Xing’s earpiece.
He believed no one could escape this kind of bombardment.
"There’s a hole over there!" one of the sharp-eyed men in a white gown shouted, spotting a small passage next to the destruction system.
It wasn’t large, just big enough for a person to crawl through.
Chen Xing was taken aback.
’That hole definitely wasn’t there before!’
But... her will to live was exceptionally strong.
She would brave it, even if danger lay within.
The moment she saw the opening, Chen Xing was already scrambling over the zombie dogs and diving straight in.
A few seconds later, another scream echoed from behind her.
This scream was remarkably short, cut off almost instantly.
Chen Xing glanced back.
Among the people who had followed her in, the man in the white hospital gown—the one who’d spotted the hole—was missing.
Another explosion went off, followed by the RUMBLING crash of a collapse behind them.
’Can’t stay here long!’
Chen Xing continued crawling forward.
After crawling for a few hundred meters, the tunnel ahead widened and grew taller.
Just as everyone was able to stand up, Hao Wenli lunged forward to grab Chen Xing by the collar and interrogate her.
’This is all her fault!’
’If she hadn’t led us here, we wouldn’t have gone through so much hardship, and so many people wouldn’t have died.’
But... her hand grabbed at empty air.
Chen Xing’s gaze was incredibly dangerous.
Hao Wenli could only retract her hand, but her resentful words spilled out, "This is all your fault! Why did you lead us into the Research Institute? Did you set this up on purpose to get us all killed?"
"Did I force you to follow me?" Chen Xing’s tone was as cold as an iceberg.
On the other end of the line, Song Yiguo heard that Chen Xing was all right and promptly hung up.
Hao Wenli was at a loss for words.
’It seemed they *had* followed of their own accord.’
"If you hadn’t run off to the Research Institute out of the blue, acting all mysterious, why would we have followed you?"
"Heh... You’re the one who works for the Research Institute. Didn’t you just follow along to see what was happening?"
Hao Wenli’s face went pale. She was speechless.
"Stop arguing, you two!" Xiao Nan quickly stepped forward to mediate. "We don’t even know if we’re safe yet. Let’s find an exit first. We can argue once we’re out of here!"
He avoided Chen Xing’s gaze, however.
’Because Chen Xing’s face was all dark and grimy right now, and frankly, it was unpleasant to look at.’
’"Full of personality" only works if the person is pretty to begin with.’
Cui Ying snorted, her eyes filled with scorn as she looked at Chen Xing. "Some people..."
Chen Xing simply turned and started walking down the only path ahead.
’The only reason I put up with Hao Wenli,’ she thought, ’is because the Research Institute knows I’ve seen through her, yet they’re keeping her around. She must be hiding some kind of secret.’
Cui Ying was left speechless.
’Was I just ignored?’
’Ignored by that ugly freak?’
Driven mad with anger, she was about to march up and confront Chen Xing when Xiao Nan pulled her back. "Don’t you fucking ruin my plans! Why are you so damn jealous? She’s hideous, what could I possibly be thinking? We still need to rely on her to get out of here, so why are you running your mouth? We’re only here because of her in the first place!"
"Oh, so *now* you think I’m pretty? Hmph..." Cui Ying was fuming. "I’m telling you, don’t you dare touch me until you realize how wrong you are!"
"Whatever, just shut up!" Xiao Nan couldn’t be bothered with her. He left her behind and hurried after Chen Xing’s group.
Although Chen Xing was walking at the very front, she had heard their entire conversation.
’So, Xiao Nan really is up to something.’
The two people in white hospital gowns followed closely behind her.
She was the first person they had seen upon waking up, and they knew she was the one who had freed them.
"Thank you for saving us!" the girl said, her face still a mask of panic as she caught up to Chen Xing.
Her feet were bare, and bruises were clearly visible on her pale insteps.
"Watch out!" Chen Xing saw something rushing toward them and moved to shield the girl. But to her surprise, the startled girl stomped her foot, and her pale flesh instantly hardened like stone.
