Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse
Chapter 147 - 144: Astonishing Suction Power
Chapter 147: Chapter 144: Astonishing Suction Power
The moment she saw a plant entangle her ankle, Chen Xing instantly reached for her knife and slashed.
The vines wrapped around her immediately recoiled.
In that brief opening, Chen Xing looked deeper inside and gasped.
The narrow passage was choked with green vines. Her side wasn’t as bad, but deeper in, not a single person was visible.
Some people, seemingly in discomfort, were wriggling, but their movements were slight.
"Wake up!" Chen Xing shouted.
The dozen or so people around her, including Wang Wu and Vice General Du, were in better shape; they were only partially ensnared by the vines.
Jolted by the sound, everyone snapped to their senses, grabbed their weapons, and began hacking away.
Song Yiguo fared the worst. He was in the middle of the group and now completely out of sight.
Disregarding the danger, Vice General Du and Wang Wu drew their blades and charged into the mass of vines, slashing furiously.
They had to be careful, worried they might strike their own comrades.
Fortunately, a closer look revealed bulging shapes within the vegetation, each one containing a trapped person.
Vice General Du and Wang Wu pushed deeper and deeper into the vines. More plants shot out from behind them, and it wasn’t long before the two were completely surrounded.
However, their destructive power was great enough to keep the vines at bay, and they always maintained a clear space around themselves.
In addition, as they freed a person here and there, their group gradually expanded, creating a hollow space within the tangled mass.
Meanwhile, Chen Xing and a few others hacked away relentlessly, freeing the people on the perimeter.
However, as they freed the first few people, they discovered that everyone had grown considerably gaunt.
’The vines haven’t been here that long, have they?’
’Their draining ability is terrifying!’
Chen Xing realized that if they slowed down, the people deeper inside would be in grave danger.
So, as she hacked away, she yelled for everyone to pick up the pace. "These plants are draining people! Faster, or the ones inside will be turned into dried husks!"
Hearing that their comrades would be turned into dried husks, the Superpower Users’ pace noticeably quickened.
The soldiers trapped deepest inside, though immobilized, could still hear Chen Xing’s words.
Terrified, they began looking for ways to save themselves.
Those who had knives on them struggled to reach them and began to slowly saw at the vines.
Some of the more resilient ones managed to free themselves and started helping those next to them.
After freeing one man, he asked in astonishment, "Are you Wu Zheng?" ’He got skinny so fast. He looks like he’s lost at least ten pounds; his eye sockets are sunken.’
Wu Zheng: "..."
He stared back at the comrade who had saved him with the same look. "Yue Datou?"
Despite their surprise, they didn’t stop working.
They knew that if they were even a step too slow, their comrades—with whom they had faced life and death—could die.
Right now, time was life!
Within half an hour, the Superpower Users were rescued one by one.
It wasn’t that the Superpower Users were helpless, but trapped inside the plants, they couldn’t use their superpowers. Their rescue depended entirely on blades.
The severed vines instantly shriveled, turning into withered branches.
Before long, the floor of the passage was littered with withered branches.
The large iron door at the far end of the passage slowly came into view.
Vines had pierced through the large iron door in several places.
It was as if the sheet metal were as soft as soil, offering no resistance to the plants’ growth.
Seeing the vines they had cut back already surging toward them again, Chen Xing resolutely pulled a grenade from her backpack. "This is my last one, saved for an emergency. Guess I have to use it now!"
After speaking, she had someone quickly open the large iron door, tossed the grenade inside, and slammed it shut.
After the explosion, the area behind the iron door finally fell silent.
’It’s unlikely we destroyed it at the source,’ Chen Xing thought. ’After all, we’re still quite a distance from the main seedbed.’
’But it should be effective at halting their advance for a while.’
She suspected these plants could sense people and other living things.
’Otherwise, the iron door would have remained untouched.’
’They only pierced through after we arrived.’
"This place isn’t safe!" To ensure they kept a safe distance from the plants, they decided to retreat the way they came.
They hadn’t gotten far on their retreat when they came face-to-face with Admiral Ouya, who was fleeing for his life deeper into the complex.
Song Yiguo’s group had already spotted them, so they didn’t show much surprise.
Ouya’s group, however, was another story.
An innumerable horde of monsters was behind them, and enemies were in front of them.
He reacted in an instant, a superpower coalescing in his hand.
’Song Yiguo must die!’
’Those were Commander Kelin’s orders.’
But before he could unleash his superpower, Vice General Du struck, severely wounding him.
Looking closer, the dozens of soldiers from the United States following Admiral Ouya were all either wounded or exhausted, their superpowers nearly depleted.
Although Song Yiguo’s group had also been drained of considerable energy by the plants, they were all still in relatively high spirits.
Severely wounded, Ouya spat out a mouthful of blood. "You dare ambush me?"
He was an admiral of the United States, a decorated commander who led Superpower Users to hunt zombies and fend off sneak attacks from other nations!
Song Yiguo let out an exasperated laugh.
’So only you’re allowed to launch sneak attacks?’
"Did Kelin send you to kill me?"
Ouya’s face turned livid. "No one sent me to kill you!"
’They could beat me to death, and I would never betray Commander Kelin.’
"Know your place." Song Yiguo sneered, then gave a nod.
Vice General Du immediately finished off Admiral Ouya.
The other Superpower Users made short work of the remaining dozens of soldiers from the United States.
Just then, the horde of monsters also surged forward.
They had experience dealing with monster hordes on their own.
The cave wasn’t very wide to begin with, so with proper control, killing them was simple.
However... the corpses of the hairy monsters were piling up, starting to block the path.
So, a few of the stronger Superpower Users were assigned to clear the bodies.
They tossed the bodies behind them one by one, while the front line continued to fight and advance.
Chen Xing was left with some free time, so she stayed in the back, picking up the Crystal Cores that dropped from the monsters’ heads.
Of course, to avoid being seen by Song Yiguo and the others, she did her work from a good distance away.
The number of monsters was dwindling, and they were not far from the cave entrance.
At that moment, a massive white figure burst in from the cave entrance, rushing straight into the fray.
This monster was huge—even bigger than the one that had been blown up at the seedbed.
A single move from it blocked more than half the cave.
In the blink of an eye, Song Yiguo’s men were all struck down, falling to the ground, unable to rise.
The monster wasn’t in a hurry to kill. It seemed to prioritize living targets, simply charging at anyone it saw.
You could say that wherever it passed, people collapsed as if they’d had a stroke.
Chen Xing had long since stopped collecting Crystal Cores. Her full attention was on the massive monster.
’I and my big mouth!’
’Why did I have to say that was my last grenade?’
’If I hadn’t, I could just take one out now and blow this thing to kingdom come, couldn’t I?’
Now, the massive monster’s only remaining target was Chen Xing.
As if savoring the thrill of the hunt, the creature actually slowed down, its speed dropping slightly.
Chen Xing: "..." ’Fuck me, being looked down on by a monster... what a pain in the ass.’
’Since I can’t use a grenade, I’ll use my knife!’
’Today, I’ll let you taste what it feels like to die by a thousand cuts!’
