Chapter 121: Chapter 118: Something Fishy with the Cao Family

Even to him, a man with absolutely no interest in women, Chen Xing was dazzling.

So what did that mean for Song Yiguo, who had once been attracted to women?

That was why... even though he knew Chen Xing had no feelings for Song Yiguo, Yan Junxi couldn’t help but worry.

Learning that Chen Xing had met Song Yiguo’s family had fully ignited his jealousy.

He couldn’t stand it anymore, which was why he’d intercepted her on her way home.

Chen Xing looked back at Yan Junxi, at a loss for words.

She could talk until she was blue in the face, but it probably wouldn’t do any good.

In his heart, Yan Junxi was like any jealous lover; once this idea took hold, it would be there forever.

"You should have more faith in your Song Yiguo! As far as I can tell, he only has eyes for you. He doesn’t even notice anyone else!" ’What else can I do?’ she thought. ’The more I can reassure Yan Junxi, the easier my life will be.’

’Otherwise, he’d keep bothering me for no reason, and it’s not like I’m his personal therapist.’

Yan Junxi’s expression finally softened, and his gaze toward Chen Xing grew warmer. "You’ll stay away from Yiguo, right?"

The truth was, he’d always been grateful to Chen Xing.

She had saved him and Yiguo on more than one occasion under perilous circumstances, albeit for a price.

But the moment his jealousy flared, he lost all control.

"I swear, there’s no chance of anything happening between me and Song Yiguo!" ’She didn’t dare promise to never see Song Yiguo again, though.’

’After all, Song Yiguo was useful. His name alone was enough to scare people anywhere on the planet.’

Reassured by her promise, Yan Junxi relaxed. Realizing how foolish his actions were, he led her away with a hint of apology.

It was time for him to get back to Yiguo.

With a sense of resignation, Chen Xing headed for Cao Guangrong’s home.

’I really need to stay away from Song Yiguo from now on.’

’Getting caught in the crossfire was one thing, but being under Yan Junxi’s constant suspicion was just awful.’

Cao Guangrong’s family was still awake. Seeing Chen Xing return, they all stood to greet her. "Xuexue, how was dinner with Young Master Song? Did you have fun?"

"Did he try anything with you?"

"What happened? Tell your father every little detail!"

"..."

They were the spitting image of nosy parents waiting up for their daughter after a date.

The resemblance was uncanny.

That was the only thing Chen Xing could feel.

"I’m tired!" Chen Xing walked past her so-called "family" without saying anything more.

As she passed by the kitchen, she glimpsed a sink piled high with dishes.

These people clearly didn’t know how to run a proper household.

’Even if Cao Guangrong was rich enough to hire a maid before the apocalypse, shouldn’t they have adapted by now, after all this time?’

Sometime in the middle of the night, Chen Xing was woken by a very faint noise.

She could tell it was coming from the kitchen.

She went to her door and heard hushed voices.

"Honey, why are you eating again so late?" Cao Nan’s sleepy voice drifted over. "What if you wake her up?"

"Shh... Lower your voice!" Li Hongfei’s tone was no longer gentle and sweet, but sharp and commanding. "Didn’t I tell you? I’m used to four meals a day. I can’t stand eating only twice a day since I came to your family’s house!"

’Heh,’ Chen Xing thought sarcastically.

’Four meals a day, in this day and age?’

’Even a family like Cao Guangrong’s couldn’t afford it.’

’There probably weren’t many people in the entire world who could afford four meals a day.’

’The key phrase was "since I came to your family’s house." That meant she hadn’t known and married Cao Nan before the apocalypse, as Cao Guangrong claimed. Instead, she’d only arrived at the Cao residence *after* the apocalypse had started. And she hadn’t been there long, given that she still wasn’t used to just two meals a day.’

’Most crucially, the Cao Family seemed to be quite wary of Li Hongfei. She had noticed this on more than one occasion, and it was especially obvious with Old Mrs. Cao.’

"Those bowls..." Cao Nan said, his head starting to ache as he looked at the ever-growing pile.

"My mom said, whoever eats is the one who does the dishes."

"It’s not like I was the only one eating!" Li Hongfei said dismissively, walking to the dining table. She set down a bowl of noodles and started shoveling them into her mouth. "Was your family really rich before the apocalypse?"

She thought Chen Xing was asleep, so she spoke without any reservations.

Besides, her voice was so low she was sure no one could hear through the door.

Cao Nan followed her over and sat down across from her, saying wistfully, "Yeah. If the apocalypse hadn’t suddenly hit, I would’ve inherited assets worth hundreds of millions. This damned apocalypse..."

"Your family seems to have adapted well enough, then!" Li Hongfei’s comment sounded like praise.

In reality, it was a dig.

In her opinion, the Cao Guangrong family were nouveau riche at best. Truly wealthy people wouldn’t live in such a tiny place or be content eating this kind of food.

"What choice did we have?" Cao Nan looked at Li Hongfei obsequiously. "My dad spent all our money on spots in the safe zone just to keep the family safe. Who the hell knew things would go south? A disaster happened, and we lost the place we were supposed to live. If it wasn’t for you... and that boss of yours..."

"Shut up!" Li Hongfei glared, cutting Cao Nan off. She turned her head to glance at Chen Xing’s door.

Seeing the door was shut tight, she relaxed. "You’d better watch your mouth. If we’re exposed, your whole family is going to suffer!"

With that, she stopped talking to Cao Nan and polished off the bowl of instant noodles.

In the darkness of her room, Chen Xing’s eyes were especially bright.

All sleepiness had vanished.

’Something is definitely up with the Cao Family.’

The next morning, Chen Xing again declined their invitation to breakfast, took the paternity test report from Cao Guangrong, and left.

She didn’t even look at the report, tossing it into a trash can as soon as she was outside.

The results of the paternity test Young Master Song was arranging would be ready this afternoon.

She was more inclined to trust Young Master Song.

She headed straight for her rendezvous point with Young Master Song.

The RV she’d been longing for was waiting for her there.

A brand-new black RV was parked in a spacious indoor showroom.

In addition to Song Yiguo, Vice General Du and a few other Superpower Users were there, admiring the vehicle.

They all looked like they wanted one for themselves, but for people constantly on missions, driving something so luxurious and extravagant was impractical.

Chen Xing was thrilled with the RV, climbing in and out to examine it from top to bottom several times.

"Do you want to reinforce the windows and the like?" Song Yiguo asked. He knew she would be satisfied.

’Who wouldn’t be thrilled to get one of these?’

’If he didn’t have the safe zone and his parents to worry about, he would’ve taken Yan Junxi on the road for fun long ago. Chen Xing never would have gotten her hands on this prize.’

"How long will the reinforcement take?" Of course Chen Xing wanted it reinforced.

’If she ran into a zombie horde, even blast-proof glass wouldn’t last.’

’But, to be safe, if it was going to take a long time, she’d rather not do it. She could always figure out a solution on her own.’

’Until the RV was in her dimensional space, she couldn’t feel secure. Who knew what could happen?’

"Half a day. It should be done before you get on the plane!"

Chen Xing: "..." ’Get on a plane?’

She eyed Song Yiguo’s sycophantic smile with suspicion.

’That smile of his definitely meant no good!’

’This guy had definitely set another trap for her!’

’And here she was, thinking yesterday’s task was too simple!’

Her focus shifted from the RV to Song Yiguo’s face as she waited for him to go on.

Song Yiguo could set a trap for anyone without batting an eye, but facing Chen Xing, he felt an uncharacteristic twinge of guilt. "I’d like to hire you for a high-paying job... a flight abroad!"
