Chapter 101: Chapter 98: An Easy Favor
He asked, trembling, "Are you a person or a ghost?"
’She must be a ghost. How else could she appear and disappear so suddenly?’
Just then, Meng Hu reached him, baring its sharp, vicious fangs and glaring at him menacingly.
It sensed its master’s anger!
’Hurt Master, and you deserve to die!’
Chen Xing rolled her eyes at Meng Hu.
’If it hadn’t suddenly roared and damaged my hearing, would I have been in any danger?’
’If it ever dares to roar recklessly during a crisis again, I’ll turn it into stew.’
’Hmm... tiger meat? That should be pretty good!’
The terrified Meng Hu was speechless. ’She’d even eat a good boy like me!?’
It immediately fled, putting some distance between itself and its master.
’Better to let Master focus her attention on the bad guy.’
"Who sent you to kill me? Was it Situ Yuanyuan?"
"Kill me, but I’ll never talk!" He put on a heroic act, as if he’d die before confessing.
"Suit yourself!" Chen Xing pressed her blade a little harder, and a spray of blood shot out.
She dodged the blood in time, keeping herself perfectly clean.
He didn’t speak, but his expression said it all.
When he heard Situ Yuanyuan’s name, his eyes twitched unnaturally, a detail she didn’t miss.
’Very good.’
’Situ Yuanyuan...’
’She lands a slap, you follow with a knife. I really almost fell for her trap.’
She didn’t even have to wonder how Situ Yuanyuan knew her location.
Vice General Du had called Song Yiguo earlier, so they knew she and the others were on Line 12.
If she wasn’t mistaken, Situ Yuanyuan had sent more than one assassin. This one was just unlucky enough to run into her.
This assassin was truly skilled. Against anyone else, he might not have failed.
Chen Xing continued her search. This was just a minor incident that caused not a single ripple in her heart.
After finishing her search, she found a station platform with only two exits, opened one that had been sealed, and walked out.
She wanted to see the situation outside.
Clearly, the situation outside was a disaster.
Even in the pitch darkness, the sky full of flying catkins was clearly visible. Mixed with the rain, they had formed a thick, cotton-like layer on the ground.
Meanwhile, the black vortex in the sky had grown so large that it could be seen clearly from anywhere.
A closer look revealed that the hailstones in the vortex hadn’t gotten much bigger, but their number was terrifyingly large.
Getting hit by one of those would be a death sentence.
She had a signal at street level, so she called Song Yiguo.
"I’ve almost finished clearing this area. When are you letting people in? It looks like the hail is about to start!"
"We’re already getting people inside. Those from outside the National Capital Safety Zone are being admitted too, but it’s taking time. There’s a huge crowd, and we have to separate them from the residents. We’re prioritizing residents, which has led to protests from the outsiders."
"Let all the outsiders into Line 12; there should be more than enough room. You can let them in at the entrance just inside the Capital City. Vice General Du should be there by now!" Although Chen Xing’s location was near the edge of the urban area, it was closer to the mountains, a place most people avoided, so it was relatively quiet.
This was also why she had chosen this location.
"I’ll check the entrance immediately and send people over right away! By the way... not many people on your end?" Song Yiguo prided himself on understanding Chen Xing.
She wasn’t one for crowds, so of course she wouldn’t choose a busy entrance.
"Right," Chen Xing confirmed.
’If I’m not mistaken, Song Yiguo wants to use the back door.’
As for who he was pulling strings for, she wasn’t so sure.
Someone with Song Yiguo’s status definitely wouldn’t take refuge here; he and his family had safer places to go.
"The families of Vice General Du and Secretary Liu, Junxi’s older sister, and some of their elderly relatives... a few dozen people in total. I want to send them your way. Going in with the crowd would be too slow, and the conditions inside might not be great."
He couldn’t let his people suffer any hardship.
Chen Xing agreed.
Even if Vice General Du let people into Line 12 from his end, they wouldn’t necessarily be able to reach her spot.
There was plenty of space, so she might as well do him the favor.
After hanging up, Chen Xing sealed the exit, ran to the far end of Line 12, and opened the gate.
After waiting for ten-some minutes, she saw the air currents in the sky begin to intensify.
The disaster was about to strike.
Just then, she saw two heavy trucks towing three buses approach.
Judging by their ages, most were middle-aged or older; there weren’t many young people or children.
She spotted Vice General Du’s parents at a glance.
His father was his spitting image, and his mother also bore a strong resemblance to him.
Fleeing the disaster, everyone had come with only what they could carry—most with just a backpack.
She didn’t have to guess to know they were filled with water and snacks.
Once everyone was inside and she was sure no one else was coming, Chen Xing lowered the blast door.
Not long after they got inside, there was a deafening CRASH.
Chen Xing had sharp hearing, and the sound nearly deafened her.
It must have been the sound of the vehicles parked outside being destroyed.
The hail was now falling mercilessly. ’I wonder how things are on Vice General Du’s end,’ she thought.
After finding and putting in some earplugs, she went to look for a quiet spot.
’Vice General Du’s parents are here. He should come over, right?’
But several hours passed, and there was still no sign of Vice General Du.
She went to check the entrance several times, but with the constant crashing outside, she didn’t want to risk a look.
When she returned to her original spot, she heard someone approaching.
It was Vice General Du’s parents. Upon seeing Chen Xing, his mother warmly grasped her hands and asked pleadingly, "Young lady, we haven’t seen our son, and we’re so worried. Is it possible to get through to the other side from here?" The mother remembered Chen Xing was the one who had let them in.
Though unused to such warmth, Chen Xing didn’t pull away. "Vice General Du is fine. You can rest assured."
The pair froze for a moment, then a look of joy spread across their faces. "You know our son?" It was only natural she would recognize them, they figured.
Father and son were cast from the same mold.
"We were on a mission together."
"I heard there are a lot of people in this subway station. I don’t know if we’ll even get to see our son!" Vice General Du’s mother couldn’t help but worry.
They knew their son was always at the forefront of danger. Sometimes, being so capable wasn’t a good thing.
Chen Xing knew the couple wouldn’t be at ease until they saw their son. "Why don’t you two wait here? I’ll go find him and tell him you’re here."
’I’m fast on my feet,’ she thought.
’If Vice General Du’s parents went over there, with such a huge crowd, they might not find him and could even get lost.’
"Oh, we couldn’t possibly trouble you like that." Her words said one thing, but the hopeful eagerness on her face wasn’t hidden at all.
Chen Xing smiled and set off.
Seeing Chen Xing on the move, Meng Hu, who had been lurking in the shadows, leaped out and followed her.
Vice General Du’s parents were speechless. If they hadn’t seen the tiger obediently trotting after Chen Xing, they would have been scared to death.
After walking for a while, Chen Xing began to see a few scattered people, and the crowds grew thicker the farther she went.
Judging by their clothes, they were ordinary people, a clear step down from the residents of the National Capital Safety Zone.
She also saw members of the Superpower Group maintaining order.
Chen Xing went straight to the other end of the line and found Vice General Du, who was still busy assigning tasks.
He was so busy that he hadn’t had any time to go see his parents.
