Contract Marriage: Married to My Ex-Husband's Alpha Stepfather [BL]
Chapter 420: You Would Be The One To Rescue Me
[FROLO]
Zhenya stared at the person before him.
It wasn’t the first time they were seeing each other. No, they saw each other daily; it was nothing new. But today felt different. Looked different.
They were currently outside the city, something that Zhenya had tried to protest, and one that got him almost kicked out of the car and abandoned on the roadside.
He’d learned to stay quiet until they got to their destination.
The entire drive was quiet while Zhenya just looked at the person like life had really done a number on them. Perhaps that’s why he didn’t even complain when they stopped and got to the house in silence.
Only when the door was closed and everything checked did the other person relax.
"It’s been hard lately, hasn’t it?" Zhenya asked, a faint smile on his face as he looked at the person before him.
Of course he knew how hard it was. Standing there and watching the developments in Frolo. How things had gotten a bit complicated now that the government was involved.
It was not the kind of shit that happened daily, but Zhenya wasn’t sure he was called because of the state of things in Frolo today or because this person needed a familiar face to talk to.
Someone he could fight with and who wouldn’t hurt him.
Someone who would always be there to keep him safe, regardless of the fact that the said person could protect themselves properly.
"Yuriy... Why did you call, little brother?" Zhenya asked carefully, not wanting to piss off his brother who was already glaring at him. Yuriy looked at Zhenya like he was already regretting the decision to call his older brother.
They were fraternal twins.
And Zhenya was older.
"The phone dialed itself," Yuriy said stubbornly, walking to the window and putting distance between him and his brother.
Zhenya just chuckled.
The phone dialed itself?
Classic Yuriy.
"Okay... When the phone dialed itself, what was happening with you?" Zhenya teased, and his brother stayed silent, still staring outside.
Zhenya was patient.
He always had been with his little brother.
He knew Yuriy better than anyone, and he knew that this was not easy for him.
Yuriy had chosen a different life than the one they had been born into.
The underworld had been their family’s home for generations, but Yuriy didn’t want the underworld. He wanted to live a normal life. He wanted a peaceful life. A life that didn’t have people targeting his family with every breath they took.
Zhenya knew how hard that choice was for Yuriy, but as the elder brother, he didn’t mind. He didn’t mind having the family legacy weigh on him.
But with time, Zhenya became too involved in the underworld. Too dangerous to be associated with easily. Too chaotic.
In a bid to protect his little brother’s peace, Zhenya changed his name. Filed the legal papers to separate himself from his brother. It wasn’t completely legal, though; it was just an identity Zhenya created.
And that identity had been useful to him over the years.
Because Zhenya would do the dirty work of protecting his little brother even when Yuriy didn’t ask for it.
Soon enough, the city got to fear Yuriy too.
Not as one of the underworld mad psychos, no.
But as one of the most powerful men in, if not the most powerful man in, normal Frolo, who had connections everywhere.
The brothers, even though on different sides of life, had worked together to make their family name something that many didn’t play games with.
And for years it had been so.
Even as powerful families grew in the city.
Zhenya had dedicated his life to doing whatever it took to keep his little brother safe. Even if that meant he had to sleep with alphas and betas.
He did it.
Even now, with the President of Frolo, that was just something for Zhenya to protect his brother. To be useful for when Yuriy called. The phone hadn’t rung for over twenty years, and Zhenya was happy that it didn’t ring.
Because if the phone didn’t ring, then it meant that Yuriy was safe. That Yuriy was okay.
But today the call had come.
And while his brother was stubbornly standing by the window, Zhenya couldn’t help but stare fondly and wait for his brother to talk to him.
He would never rush his brother.
He never had.
He wasn’t about to start today.
"I was... I think I have to..." Yuriy sighed in frustration before he walked back to the couch where his brother was. He was seated opposite his older brother now.
"Yuriy... come on, Yura... You know you can trust me," Zhenya said, calling his brother by the name their parents always used once upon a time.
Yuriy scoffed, looking up at his brother.
"You’re sleeping with him," Yuriy said flatly.
"He means nothing to me. You know you’re the only one I care about, Yura," Zhenya insisted as if that was supposed to get his brother to open up.
Maybe it would.
"If you want me to kill him, I will," Zhenya added in earnest.
Yuriy stared attentively.
"I know," the younger brother sighed in acknowledgement, and Zhenya smiled at that.
This was progress.
It was a lot of progress, especially with Yuriy.
"Sergei Moskowsky," Yuriy said.
Zhenya listened.
"The devil of Frolo... did he hurt you? The massacre a few days ago... did he..." Zhenya asked, pausing occasionally like he was already coming up with a plan.
Zhenya was not new to Sergei Moskowsky, and he knew Sergei was hard to defeat. He knew Sergei was the monster that even monsters like Zhenya were horrified by.
But if Yuriy wanted an operation against Sergei, Zhenya would do it.
Even if he knew he would die trying.
"He’d never hurt me," Yuriy said confidently.
"That’s... good... Right?" the older asked as he shifted seats and sat beside Yuriy.
"I guess... But..."
"But what?"
"Promise me you... You’ll say no if you can’t... You don’t have to. You don’t need to just because I’m your brother. I’m older now.
"I can take care of myself and my problems. Just..." Yuriy trailed off as he looked at his brother, unsure if his request was making sense.
"You care..."
Yuriy got up and walked to the other side of the room, disapproval all over his face.
"I don’t," Yuriy insisted.
"You care about him, Yura," Zhenya said, following his brother, but not closing the distance.
"No. It’s not that..." Yuriy trailed off.
"You trust him," Zhenya filled in the blanks for himself.
Yuriy didn’t look away from the window he was staring at.
"You trust him and care about him. And you want... to help him fight... don’t you?" Zhenya asked, a smile on his face.
"No," Yuriy said coldly.
"I’ll do it," Zhenya said, and Yuriy turned to his brother again.
"You will?"
"Of course. You broke our no-contact rule for him. You have never cared for someone that much since your wife," Zhenya said excitedly.
"Don’t..."
"It’s okay, you know."
"I’m not like you."
"You don’t have to be. You’re my brother. We are different, and it’s okay, Yura. You know that too," Zhenya reassured.
Yuriy stared again.
"Who would have thought that the fierce Yuriy Levinovich Romanov would care for Sergei Moskowsky?" Zhenya teased.
"You’re delusional," Yuriy, or as everyone in the city knew him, Mr. Romanov, said, walking out.
"Say hello to my nephew for me! And don’t worry... I’ll find myself a ride back to the city!!" Zhenya teased.
But then his brother was gone.
"I knew he had a heart under all that cold demeanor," Zhenya fist-bumped himself before he followed his brother an hour later.
After making some calls.
The city knew Chief Zhenya Levin, the fierce protector of the president...
But they didn’t know Yevgeniy Levinovich Romanov, the alpha older brother who lived to protect his twin.
