Chapter 1277: Chapter 668: Extra: The Little White Rabbit’s Way of Handling “Rivals” 2_2
Alice vaguely sensed that Ada seemed to have noticed something, and couldn’t help secretly admiring the secretary’s quick reactions. Then she stopped beating around the bush and said, "Ada, Chester actually wasn’t at the office last night, was he?"
"Um..."
"Tell me the truth. I just want to know Chester’s whereabouts last night. I promise he’ll never find out I called you."
"But Mr. Robinson really was at the office last night!"
"Really?" Alice smiled. "Ada, you should believe I’m capable of convincing Chester to fire an employee who isn’t honest, right? Even if that employee has been working himself to the bone for him for years."
Ada instantly panicked. "Mrs. Robinson..."
Alice’s voice softened. "All right, just tell me the truth. I promise I’m only asking about Chester’s whereabouts, I’ll never put you in a difficult spot in front of him."
Ada hesitated for a moment before answering, "Mrs. Robinson... Mr. Robinson only just arrived in New York yesterday. He called me early on to say he wouldn’t be coming to the office, that he’d be staying home to spend the day with you. So Mr. Robinson didn’t come to the office yesterday."
"And he didn’t have any social engagements last night?"
"There shouldn’t have been any. After Mr. Robinson instructed me, I turned down all the clients who wanted to meet with him, so he didn’t go out to entertain anyone last night."
After spacing out for a few seconds, Alice said, "Thank you, Ada. I promise Chester won’t hold this against you."
"Thank you, Mrs. Robinson."
Alice slumped heavily against the sofa and ended the call.
He lied to her. He actually lied to her.
He hadn’t gone to the office, hadn’t gone out to entertain clients, yet he’d told her he was going to the office?
Why did he have to lie to her?
Why?
Did he really go to see Becca last night? But Becca wouldn’t have gone to see him. All along, Becca had kept the relationship between Alice and Chester clearly defined in her mind. Becca had never accepted Chester, and had always maintained the distance of mere friends with him. It was impossible she’d go meet Chester. Then who had Chester gone to see last night? Where had that perfume on him come from?
Alice was lost in thought over this when her phone suddenly rang.
The call was from Christine Quinn.
Alice broke off her train of thought and pressed the answer key. "Hello... Christine."
"Alice, Mom’s worried about you. She asked me to call and check whether you’ve been drinking soup on schedule these two days to build yourself up."
"Troubling Aunt like that... I’m fine. I’ve been drinking the soup."
Christine asked with concern, "You really have to take care of your health. Don’t think just because you’re young you can ignore everything..."
"I know."
"All right then, nothing else. Take good care of yourself."
"Mm."
"When we have time, Becca and I will come see you again."
"Okay."
"Bye-bye."
"Wait, Christine."
"What is it?"
Alice lightly bit her lip, then smiled as she said, "Um... I tried calling Becca last night. Her phone didn’t go through. Was she not home last night?"
"Oh, Becca went out with some friends last night. She came back pretty late. I figure she was somewhere with bad reception."
"She went out last night?"
Christine immediately lowered her voice on the other end. "Alice, you mustn’t tell anyone. Last night Becca waited till Howard Geoffrey went out for a business dinner before sneaking out to play for a bit. You know how uptight Howard is about Becca—he doesn’t allow her to go out alone without a bodyguard."
Alice laughed and said, "Of course I won’t say anything... I know exactly how nervous Howard is about his wife."
Christine chuckled.
Alice said, "If there’s nothing else, I’ll leave it at that..."
"Okay."
"Bring the kids over to play at my place when you have time..."
"Bye-bye."
After finishing the call with Christine Quinn, Alice froze on the sofa.
The phone slipped from her fingertips; her face had long since gone pale.
So, the person who called him during dinner yesterday was Becca... no wonder he’d gone over to the window to take the call.
Yes, driving from here to the neighborhood where Jones’ Mansion is located only takes a short two hours. He could easily have gone over to meet Becca and then come home by eleven.
Only, what was it that they needed to meet alone for last night?
Becca had always kept her distance from him. Why would she have asked him out to meet last night?
He’d rushed out the moment he got Becca’s call—what was he so eager for? And he’d kept insisting he no longer had any personal feelings for Becca.
A thin blade of pain slid across her heart—both for his lies and for Becca’s lack of self-restraint as a married woman.
Everyone in the Geoffrey family knew how much she cared about Chester. Her eagerness to move back into the villa she shared with him—anyone with half a brain could guess it was because she didn’t want Chester seeing too much of Becca. And yet now, Becca was secretly asking Chester out behind her back—what was that supposed to mean?
Why did everyone in the world like Becca? Why did Becca have to come wreck the happiness she’d finally managed to get?
"Miss Robinson, where are you going?"
Alice was driving out of the estate when she ran into the maid Elsa.
Alice rolled down the window and answered coolly, "I’m going out for a while. Have the driver pick Rachel up this afternoon, and don’t call Chester about me going out."
"Yes, ma’am."
Rolling the window back up, Alice pulled away from the villa.
Alice dialed a string of numbers.
Rebecca Quentin picked up on the other end. Her gentle voice was as joyous and serene as ever. "Alice."
"Becca, are you free right now?"
"Sure."
"Then can we meet in two hours?"
"Of course... Alice, are you over by Jones’ Mansion?"
"Mm."
"You and Chester?"
"No, just me."
"Oh..."
"I won’t say more now, Becca. I’ll call you when I get there... Oh, and come alone. I want to talk to you privately."
On the other end, Rebecca Quentin was completely puzzled by Alice’s sudden invitation. She only nodded blankly. "Okay."
Since Jones’ Mansion is in the suburbs of New York, Alice and Rebecca Quentin didn’t arrange to meet in the city center, but chose a café in a small town not far from the mansion.
