Chapter 1555: Chapter 781: Gathering Intelligence!_2
Aixius was hemming and hawing, unable to give a clear answer.
The car drove for a while longer, and Lin Beichen and his group arrived near Freedom City. This place was incredibly crowded, and if Lin Beichen marched in with such a large entourage, it would surely cause panic and possibly even some trouble.
So, Lin Beichen arranged for the others to stay outside the city while he took a few people to go into the city to gather information. He planned to ask around if there were any Mercenary Corps bases nearby, and if possible, he wanted to visit them. If there weren’t any, he needed to find out if there were reliable construction companies around so they could build a base outside the city.
Accompanying Lin Beichen into the city were the inseparable Aixius, Tyson, and Li Kui. Li Kui was quite familiar with Lin Beichen and also had a good knowledge of Freedom City, so bringing him along would surely be helpful.
The four of them strolled down the bustling streets of Freedom City, and compared to where they had been before, this place was packed with people.
"Wow, there’s a clothing store over there, Lin Beichen, can I take a look?" Aixius suddenly spotted a large clothing store and couldn’t move on.
"No, you can’t." Lin Beichen refused without a second thought.
"Not now, we’ve got business to take care of first. After we’re done, you can shop all you want."
Lin Beichen added another sentence.
Hearing Lin Beichen say this, Aixius felt a bit better and nodded.
"Li Kui, logically, there should be quite a few Mercenary Corps bases around Freedom City, right?" Lin Beichen turned to ask Li Kui.
Unexpectedly, Li Kui shook his head: "I don’t know about that either, I just arrived here a little while ago..."
Hearing this, Lin Beichen was speechless; wouldn’t they then be like blind men wandering around Freedom City aimlessly?
If they randomly asked someone, Lin Beichen didn’t think it would be reliable; ordinary people wouldn’t know these kinds of things on the street, and it would be a waste to ask.
Suddenly, an idea flashed in Lin Beichen’s mind, and his eyes lit up.
Right, there’s a place where you can definitely find other Mercenary Corps people. Going there to ask around would help identify their target.
With this thought, Lin Beichen said to Li Kui, "Do you know where the gambling houses are in Freedom City?"
"Brother Lin, are you going to gamble?" Li Kui’s eyes lit up instantly upon hearing this.
"If you ask me anything else, I might not know, but when it comes to gambling houses, you can’t go wrong asking me, Li Kui." Li Kui was about to brag more, but seeing Lin Beichen’s impatient look, he quickly changed his words, "There are four gambling houses in Freedom City, which one do you want to go to?"
"The largest one." Lin Beichen said calmly.
When it comes to gathering information, the more people, the better. The bigger the casino, the more people are bound to be there.
Upon hearing about the gambling house, Aixius’s eyes also lit up. She hadn’t forgotten the thrill of winning money there with Lin Beichen previously.
Tyson, on the other hand, wasn’t much interested in going to the gambling house. He was just a rough guy who thought gambling wasn’t for him. Drinking would get him excited and jumping for joy.
With Li Kui leading the way, the group arrived at a large gambling house.
This establishment was called "Gold and Jade", with upper and lower floors.
The lower floor was a hall filled with various gambling instruments, and there were crowds of people around the gaming tables, lively and bustling. Occasionally, someone would shout with excitement, although it was unclear if they were winning or losing.
Seeing the scene made Li Kui’s hands itch.
"Brother Lin, we’re already here, can we just gamble a bit to test our luck?" Li Kui said nervously, rubbing his hands incessantly, trying hard to restrain his desires.
Before Lin Beichen could speak, Aixius chimed in.
"Lin Beichen, I want to play too."
Seeing them both say this, Lin Beichen helplessly shook his head and then said, "Alright, but while you’re playing, keep an eye out for any Mercenary Corps members here."
Aixius and Li Kui nodded happily and went to exchange chips.
Lin Beichen didn’t follow them this time. He planned to let them play on their own and perhaps lose some money, so maybe they wouldn’t want to gamble next time.
Then, Lin Beichen split up with Tyson and went to secretly inquire about these people’s identities.
Lin Beichen walked over to a fierce-looking man.
He didn’t immediately talk to the man but planned to observe him from the side for a bit.
At the moment, the man was betting excitedly, not noticing someone was secretly watching him.
"Place your bets, no more bets!"
"I’m betting on Leopard!" the fierce-looking man with a face full of tough lines shouted.
Lin Beichen shook his head, thinking this guy’s really something, does he think he’s like me and can scan the dice with a system?
Sure enough, the guy lost right away.
He was so angry he slammed the table and cursed, "Damn it, what a lousy casino, I bet on the leopard more than ten times and didn’t hit once."
Next to him was a man who seemed to know this rough guy; he spoke, "Brother Leopard, betting like that, you’ll lose all your money sooner or later."
Lin Beichen almost burst into laughter hearing this. This guy’s called Brother Leopard? Does he think having that name means he’ll win betting on leopards? What a "talent".
Brother Leopard was clearly unhappy, looking disdainfully at the man who had kindly advised him. It turns out this man was his friend, named Fang Biao, and they had sneaked out together from their base to gamble. But Fang Biao won quite a bit while Brother Leopard lost miserably. The comparison made Brother Leopard much more envious and angry.
So, hearing Fang Biao’s advice, Brother Leopard shouted angrily, "Mind your damn business!"
"What I bet on is none of your business!"
Fang Biao felt speechless upon hearing this, quickly made an excuse to leave, not wanting to get tangled up with Brother Leopard any longer.
As for talking back, Fang Biao didn’t have the guts. In their area, Brother Leopard was at least a little boss; in terms of status and strength, he easily outstripped him. Plus, Brother Leopard’s notorious for his bad temper.
Fang Biao regretted in his heart, wishing he hadn’t come out with this idiot.
After muttering this to himself, he disappeared from the gambling table.
Seeing Brother Leopard’s volatile temper, Lin Beichen felt like he had found the right person.
After all, someone with such a fiery temper might have some skills and could likely be part of a Mercenary Corps, the kind who live on the edge every day.
As Lin Beichen was pondering how to get Brother Leopard to reveal which Mercenary Corps they belonged to and where their base was, someone tapped him on the shoulder.
Turning around, Lin Beichen saw it was Aixius, with Li Kui trailing behind.
Lin Beichen instinctively asked, "What’s up?"
Aixius looked a bit embarrassed and said, "Li Kui and I have lost all our money."
Li Kui also looked awkward, wishing he could find a hole to crawl into.
Actually, them losing all their money was just what Lin Beichen had hoped for.
This way, they’d understand that gambling isn’t an easy way to make money. If it were, everyone would quit their jobs and just gamble.
"Oh, that’s normal, you win some, you lose some." Lin Beichen replied unhurriedly.
But what happened next was completely beyond his expectations.
Unexpectedly, after hearing Lin Beichen’s words, Li Kui said, "Yeah, it’s just not my lucky day, I’ll come back when my luck’s better."
Aixius, meanwhile, looked at Lin Beichen eagerly and said, "Lin Beichen, how did you know the outcomes last time, why don’t you..."
Her meaning was crystal clear; she wanted Lin Beichen to help her win money.
Seeing this situation, Lin Beichen realized that losing money hadn’t killed Aixius and Li Kui’s desire to gamble but had instead made them more addicted.
This wasn’t a good sign, so Lin Beichen earnestly said, "Gambling’s not just about luck. You two simply aren’t cut out for it, so you better not focus on it."
Li Kui clearly felt a bit unsatisfied: "How’s it not about luck? I won a lot last time."
"Then there must be times when you lose it all back." Lin Beichen explained, "Isn’t that right?"
Li Kui was left speechless by the retort. Suddenly, he had a bright idea and quickly said, "But if Aixius said you teach her, she could always win?"
"Yeah, gambling’s a game for those with talent." Lin Beichen laughed and said, "For example, talented people like me."
