Common Sense Altering System
Chapter 150
The sun did not set over Oakhaven; it burned out, bleeding a heavy, copper-tinted red across the jagged edges of the Blackwood Ridge.
Caleb Vance leaned against the weathered porch rail of the dry-goods store, adjusting his beaten leather Stetson. The air smelled of dry dirt, horse sweat, and the faint, sulfurous tang of black powder. It was an ordinary, suffocating Tuesday in 1874—until the sky split open.
It wasn’t lightning. Lightning made noise. This was a silent, blinding fracture of violet light that tore across the horizon, freezing the dust motes in the air.
Caleb reached for the Colt revolver at his hip out of pure instinct, but his fingers froze an inch from the wood grip. Time dropped away. The sound of chatter from the saloon across the street vanished. The rhythmic thrum of crickets stopped cold.
Then, a translucent box flared into existence directly in front of his eyes.
[SYSTEM INITIALIZATION COMPLETE]

[Calculating Local Persona…]
[Class Assigned: Gunslinger]
[Level 1]
Caleb blinked, shaking his head hard enough to rattle his teeth. “What in the blue blazes…”
He swatted at the glowing blue window, but his hand passed right through it, disturbing nothing but warm air. The text shifted seamlessly.

Before Caleb could decipher what “Mana” or “Grid” meant, a blood-curdling shriek shattered the unnatural silence.
At the far end of the main street, past the water tower, a draft horse collapsed into the dust, thrashing wildly. Standing over it was not a wolf or a mountain lion, but a creature straight out of a preacher’s worst sermon. It stood seven feet tall, its skin resembling cracked black iron, with four elongated arms terminating in bone blades.
Above the monster’s head, floating in harsh red text, were words Caleb could somehow read instantly:
[Dust-Crawler – Level 4]
Panic hit Oakhaven like a flash flood. Men scrambled off their horses, women screamed, pushing children behind wooden boardwalks, and Deputy Miller sprinted out of the sheriff’s office with a Winchester rifle raised.
“Hold your ground!” Miller bellowed, cycling a round into the chamber.
The deputy fired. The lead bullet struck the creature squarely in the chest, but instead of blood, a dull clang echoed off the buildings. A tiny blue digit popped up above the monster’s head: [-2 HP].
The Dust-Crawler didn’t even flinch. It blurred forward with terrifying speed, closing a fifty-yard gap in two bounds. A single sweep of its upper blade tore through Deputy Miller’s chest, lifting him off his feet and hurling him into the hitching post.
[Party Member / Ally Killed]
[Emergency Quest Issued: Survival of Oakhaven]
* Objective: Eliminate the Dust-Crawler (0/1).
* Reward: 150 EXP, 50 Copper Grid Coins, Basic Ammo Pouch.
* Failure Penalty: Death.
Caleb’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. Every instinct honed over twenty-two years on the Texas frontier yelled at him to run, to hide in the brush until whatever devilry this was passed over. But the monster turned its head, glowing yellow eyes locking directly onto Caleb.
[HOSTILE TARGET LOCKED]
[Initiating Combat Sequence]
“Damn it all to hell,” Caleb muttered.
He didn’t think; he reacted. His hand snapped down to his holster, the heavy steel of his Colt .45 sliding free with a motion so practiced it was pure muscle memory.
Click.
[Ability Triggered: Deadeye Focus (Lvl 1)]
[Mana: 40 / 40 -> 30 / 40]
The world dropped into an uncanny standstill. The dust floating between him and the beast seemed to stop mid-air. The monster’s lunging motion slowed to a crawl, allowing Caleb to notice a faint, pulsating crack in the black iron armor right beneath its throat.
A soft spot.
Caleb leveled the barrel, exhaled slowly, and squeezed the trigger.
BOOM.
The gun roared, recoil biting into his wrist. The bullet didn’t glance off this time. It slammed straight into the glowing fissure.
[CRITICAL HIT!]
[-38 HP]
The Dust-Crawler shrieked, a sound like grinding metal, and stumbled backward, black fluid spurting from its neck. The temporal drag of Deadeye Focus snapped back to normal speed, the sudden rush of ambient noise nearly deafening Caleb.
[Mana: 20 / 40]
“It can bleed!” someone yelled from a doorway.
The beast lashed out in agony, its lower limbs clawing up dirt as it lunged sideways into the shadow of the blacksmith’s forge to break line of sight. It was smart. It wasn’t just a wild beast; it had hunting instincts.
Caleb broke into a run, vaulting over the porch railing and landing heavily in the dirt street. He cycled the hammer back with his thumb.
Five rounds left.
He pushed forward, keeping his boots quiet against the dry soil as he rounded the corner of the forge. The stench of ozone and scorched earth was thick here. He caught a glimpse of movement near the coal heap—the creature was crouching, its wounds knitting together slowly as a faint green mist rose from its chest.
[Passive Regeneration Active on Target]
Finish it quickly, Gunslinger.
“Not on my watch,” Caleb growled.
He activated Deadeye Focus once more.
[Mana: 20 / 40 -> 10 / 40]
The world stretched out into sluggish motion again. Caleb stepped into the open. The beast whipped around, raising two blade-arms to shield its throat. But Caleb didn’t aim for the throat this time.
He aimed low.
BOOM.
[-12 HP] — The round shattered the monster’s left knee joint, causing it to collapse onto one side.
BOOM.
[-14 HP] — The second round blew through its remaining lower arm joint, neutralizing its defense.
BOOM.
[CRITICAL HIT!]
[-42 HP] — The final round smashed directly into its exposed eye socket.
The Dust-Crawler twitched violently, its legs kicking out once before going completely rigid. The red text above its head flickered and faded into black.

[You are now Level 2]
[Stat Points Available: 3]
[Loot Acquired: Iron-Hide Shard (x2), 50 Grid Coins]
Caleb stood over the smoking corpse, his chest heaving, smoke curling from the barrel of his Colt.
Around him, Oakhaven began to wake up from its nightmare. Townsfolk peeked out from behind doors, whispered frantically, and looked between the dead monster and Caleb as if he were a ghost.
The glowing blue screen remained floating in front of him, silent and waiting for his next command. The old West was gone. The open range, the quiet nights under the stars—all replaced by stats, monsters, and a grid that had just claimed the world.
Caleb reloaded his revolver, one brass cartridge at a time.
“Well,” he whispered to the empty street, staring up at the shattered sky. “Guess it’s a whole new frontier.”
How’s this for the tone and direction? If you want to dive straight into Chapter 2—whether he allocates those stat points, explores the town, or faces the next wave of the System—just let me know where you’d like to take him next!
The heavy silence of Oakhaven broke into a chorus of frantic hushed whispers. Nobody dared to approach the metallic carcass in the dirt—nobody except Old Man Higgins, who peeked out from behind the water trough, his jaw slack.
Caleb paid them no mind. He tapped the floating light in front of him, selecting the new [Stat Points] menu.
[STAT ALLOCATION]
* Strength: 11
* Agility: 14
* Perception: 16 (+3 Pending)
Confirm allocation? [Y/N]
He confirmed it. Instantly, a strange, cooling sensation rushed behind his eyes. The distant creak of the saloon door sounded twice as crisp; he could see individual grains of gun powder sticking to his jacket sleeve fifty feet away.
“Vance!”
Caleb turned. Sheriff Ross was limping down the boardwalk, a double-barrel shotgun trembling in his grip. The old man looked at the dead Dust-Crawler, then at Caleb’s glowing eye-level air.
“What in God’s name was that thing?” Ross rasped, his face pale. “And what are you lookin’ at?”
“A new set of rules, Sheriff,” Caleb said, holstering his Colt. “And I don’t think that monster was a lone wolf.”
As if answering him, a low, collective rumble shook the ground beneath their boots. Far past the boundary fences, deep within the Blackwood Ridge, dozens of red text markers ignited against the darkening horizon like blood-red stars.
[SYSTEM ANNOUNCEMENT]
[Wave 1 of Frontier Trial initiating in 00:10:00.]
[Objective: Defend Settlement: Oakhaven.]
Caleb spat into the dust and pulled a fresh box of .45 cartridges from his vest. “Get everyone into the church, Sheriff. The real fight’s coming.”
Sheriff Ross hesitated, then nodded sharply, barked orders at the gathered crowd, and hustled them toward the heavy oak doors of the chapel.
Caleb walked toward the center of the road, thumbing fresh cartridges into his.
