Maya felt cold. It was strange how cold she felt. It was even stranger because she didn’t feel cold—not usually. Not this sort of cold that seeped into her bones.

Even in the dark, she had clearly seen it. The way he jumped over her hand as she tried to touch him to get him to look at her.

She had badly wanted to reach him, to explain herself, and through the pain, she had stretched out her bleeding hand—and he just jumped over it.

He had certainly seen her alright. There was no doubt about that in her mind.

The words dried on her lips as she pulled her hand back. He wasn’t going to listen. He was leaving her while she was bleeding on the floor.

She heard the sound of the door shutting, but it sounded far away. Her hand fell to her side as she lay on her back, but the pain didn’t even register. All she felt was the overwhelming coldness.

"So cold," she whimpered but the words barely passed her lips as she shivered.

"Fucking bitch!" Alaina yelled the instant the door shut and ran toward her. "Why didn’t you just stay unconscious?"

Maya felt herself move, but she didn’t feel the kick. Another kick—this one moved her a few inches to the left. Alaina was saying something, but she couldn’t hear her anymore.

How much blood did I lose?

Her body felt tingly, and her vision was starting to blur, but at least it no longer hurt as much as before. Even her heart wasn’t hurting.

"Bess!" Alaina yelled. "Quickly, let’s get her out of here."

Bess? The maid is here. I didn’t hear her approach.

"Where are we taking her to?" She asked.

"The mines," Alaina replied. "We will keep her there until I figure something out. I doubt the Alpha would want to see her. I’ll take care of it. Now quickly."

"She’s still bleeding," Bess whispered.

"Shit! She can’t die."

Unfortunately, as much as she hated Maya, she wasn’t stupid enough to let her die. She didn’t understand why the High Alpha was obsessed with someone who wasn’t even his real daughter, but it wasn’t her business to pry.

Besides, he was grateful he took her away. So she had to live.

If she was handed back to the High Alpha, he would leave Verlassen alone, and she would get her title. With Keenan heartbroken, she could plant herself in his life, and slowly he would realize she was the only one he could trust.

The plan was perfect. If the little twat had not tried to return, Alpha Keenan wouldn’t have pursued her. She had seen the look on his face. He finally hated her as she deserved.

She had treated him with such cruelty all these years, yet he was merciful but finally, the goddess had shown her favor. She wouldn’t let this little piggy ruin it.

Maya heard a rip from her clothes, and then her bleeding arm was wrapped tightly. If she wasn’t already so numb, she would have screamed in pain.

"She is very pale, Alaina," Bess whispered.

The maid’s face appeared in her view, and there was a slight look of concern. However, Maya could hardly trust her vision, not with everything blurring out.

"She won’t die from this. I know. This vermin will keep raising her ugly head."

Maya almost smiled at her words. If Alaina wasn’t the one who put her in this situation in the first place, she might have found relief in her words.

She was worried about the baby. She had tried her best not to think about the baby, but now that she had lost the father, she was filled with a deep fear that made her shiver.

What if she lost the baby too? Her body had gone through so much, the blood loss coupled with the inexplicable coldness was bad news.

My baby.

She tried to move her hand, but her body felt frozen. Stiff. Cold. Oh, she was so cold.

Suddenly, she was lifted off the floor and placed on the back of something soft and a little warm. Maya didn’t even have the energy to hold on.

"Be careful," Alaina said as she pulled her hand away from her. "She is barely conscious."

Out of the corner of her eye, Alaina shifted, and Maya realized she had never seen Alaina’s wolf before. There was nothing familiar about it. Her fur had little blonde patches that stood out in the dark room.

They rushed toward the door with Alaina leading. Maya hardly felt the movement as she lay on Bess.

It got brighter as they stepped out the doors, but her vision was still blurry. She could hardly make out anything except the hazy shapes of the houses around them.

Alaina didn’t walk through the usual path, and it didn’t take too long for her to find out why. Voices filled the town as people returned from the beach holding lights. Keenan must have gotten to them.

Children were crying, and she could hear their mothers try to console them. Maya hoped no one was hurt. She had left Lily by herself. She hoped someone found her.

She grimaced as she remembered Theo’s outburst. His brother had been attacked, and he might not survive. His attack suddenly made sense to her.

She understood that Alaina hated her, but Asher was her mate’s brother. Did she not care for him? She had orchestrated this willingly to hurt anyone who stood in her way.

It hurt too much to think. She had thought she would lose consciousness by now, but she was stubbornly awake.

The sounds of the waves pulled her out of her thoughts. They were by the beach. She didn’t even notice when they got here.

Alaina said they were taking her to the mines. The mines were on the other side of the beach. Despite how close it was, no one had been allowed to get even a few meters to it when the High Alpha controlled Verlassen, and anyone who stepped in was never allowed to step out.

Fitting.

She wondered what Alaina planned for her. She didn’t sound like she was going to kill her, and she didn’t know if she should be relieved or not.

It was all ruined. Even if she was given a chance, she doubted Alpha Keenan would listen to her, and even if he did, he wouldn’t believe her.
