Claimed by the Secret Alpha Billionaire
Chapter 130: Eyes on Another
Maya’s POV
Kelvin and I moved toward the sofa.
On the other hand, Helen sat back down, looking completely comfortable now that he had arrived.
Kelvin sat next to me, and I placed the dessert bag on the coffee table.
"So, how have you been?" I heard Kelvin ask Helen.
"I’ve been good." She smiled, then continued talking about her plans, telling Kelvin that she had been thinking seriously about changing jobs because she wanted something more stable and a position where she could build an actual career.
I listened quietly, already knowing where the conversation was going.
Helen had not mentioned Mercer again since Kelvin arrived, but I could tell she was waiting for the right opportunity.
Eventually, Kelvin stared at her. "So, what kind of work are you looking for?"
Her expression brightened immediately. "Something in business administration, preferably with a company where there is room to grow. I have experience in client relations and office management, and I have been thinking about moving into something more corporate."
Kelvin nodded thoughtfully. "That gives you several options."
Helen hesitated before smiling. "Actually, I was hoping if Mercer Technologies has any openings."
I kept my expression calm.
Kelvin did not immediately answer. Instead, he leaned back slightly and considered her question.
"We are always hiring in different departments," he said. "It depends on the position and the qualifications."
My fingers tightened slightly against the fabric of my dress. I had told Helen that Mercer was not hiring. But now Kelvin was making it clear that I had been wrong.
Helen looked at him hopefully. "So there might be something suitable for me?"
"There could be," he replied. "I would need to see your credentials first."
She smiled broadly. "I can send them to you."
"Prepare your résumé, academic records, and any relevant professional certifications. Send everything through properly, and I will have someone in HR review it," he said.
My smile remained in place, but something inside me sank. Kelvin was actually considering giving her a position.
A good position, judging from the seriousness with which he was discussing it.
"That would be wonderful," Helen said. "Thank you so much, Kelvin. I have been trying to find somewhere I can build a proper career, and Mercer would be an incredible opportunity."
Kelvin gave her a polite smile. "If your qualifications match what we need, there is no reason you should not be considered."
I forced myself to speak before my expression betrayed me. "That sounds good, Helen. Once you have everything ready, you can give me the documents. I will make sure Kelvin receives them."
Helen turned toward me with a grateful smile. "Really? You would do that for me?"
"Of course." The words came easily.
The last thing I wanted was for Helen to start communicating directly with Kelvin about her application.
If she gave me everything, I could remain involved in the process and know exactly what was happening.
Helen looked delighted. "Thank you, Sister. I really appreciate it."
"You’re welcome."
She smiled at Kelvin again. "I promise I will work hard if I get the opportunity."
"I expect you would," he said.
His answer was ordinary. At least, that was what I told myself.
Still, I noticed his eyes stayed on Helen for a little longer than I would have liked.
It was not an obvious stare. Kelvin was simply listening to her as she spoke, his attention moving between her face and the rest of her appearance as naturally as anyone might look at another person during a conversation.
But Helen was wearing that short skirt.
I followed his gaze before I could stop myself. His eyes had dropped briefly toward her legs before returning to her face.
My stomach tightened. I looked away, telling myself that I had imagined it.
A few minutes later, Helen shifted in her seat while talking about the kind of work she wanted. Again, I caught Kelvin’s attention moving downward before returning to her face.
This time, I noticed the neckline of her top. My irritation returned immediately.
I hated that I was watching him so closely, but I hated even more that I was watching her.
Helen had always been bubbly and easygoing. She laughed easily, spoke freely, and had a way of making people comfortable around her without seeming to make any effort.
Men naturally paid attention to her.
I had seen it before. She did not even need to flirt, and that was what made it worse.
There was nothing obvious I could criticize. She was simply being Helen.
I looked at Kelvin again. He was listening to her explanation about one of her previous jobs, asking a few practical questions about what she had done and what responsibilities she had handled.
There was nothing inappropriate about it. Nothing I could reasonably object to. Yet unease remained.
I reminded myself that Kelvin was my fiancé.
He had spent weeks caring for me when I could barely move around on my own. He had stayed when he could have walked away.
Last night, he had come close to me again in a way he had not since everything between us had fallen apart.
Those things mattered more than a few glances.
I shifted closer to him and rested my hand lightly on his arm. He glanced at me.
"What is it?"
"Nothing," I said with a smile. "I just wanted to sit closer to you."
His expression softened, and he placed his hand over mine. The small gesture settled something within me.
Helen continued speaking, apparently unaware of the thoughts running through my head.
"Sister, I will prepare everything tonight," she said. "Once I have all the documents together, I will send them to you."
"Good."
She smiled. "I really hope it works out."
"It will be considered properly," Kelvin said.
Helen nodded enthusiastically. "I know. I just want a chance."
Kelvin glanced at her again. "You will get one if your qualifications support it."
I smiled at Helen. However, inside, I was already thinking about how to keep control of the situation.
If Helen joined Mercer, she would have a legitimate reason to be around Kelvin.
She could enter his office, discuss work with him, call for clarification if needed, and become part of his professional life. I disliked this prospect intensely.
I looked at Helen’s cheerful face and felt the first real stirrings of resentment towards her since she had arrived.
She had done nothing wrong. That was precisely the problem.
I could not accuse her of anything. I could not tell Kelvin that I disliked the idea of her working at Mercer simply because she was attractive and naturally drew attention.
I could not even admit to myself that the thought of her being around him bothered me this much. So, I smiled.
I leaned against Kelvin’s arm, and I reminded myself that I was still his fiancée.
Whatever happened next, I had no intention of allowing another woman to take my place.
