Chapter 328: Chapter 328 Hexworks

Emilia’s POV

I looked up, confused.

Mindy shot her husband a look and explained. "Years ago, when we were desperate for a baby, we saw every doctor in the city. Nothing worked. I was half out of my mind. Chuck had mentioned witches once, so I thought, why not try something outside the ordinary? I dug and dug until I tracked down a witch’s contact. But Chuck wouldn’t hear of me going."

Chuck spread his hands. "I wanted a normal life. That’s all. Your mother had powerful magic, and she used it to prop up Henry, and look how that turned out. Anything touching the supernatural is nothing but trouble. I barely understand the half of it. So I talked Mindy out of it."

He reached over and folded his hand around his wife’s. "We did just fine without kids, the two of us."

Mindy swatted his arm. "I always figured, if we’d had children, you might’ve stayed on the straight and narrow. For their sake, at least."

"That was one time. Twice, tops. Never did anything bad again!" Chuck protested. "And Richie set me up, I’ll have you know."

I sat there turning the card over in my fingers, thoughts churning.

Mindy leaned toward me. "Emilia, I won’t promise it’ll work. But it’s a chance. That’s more than nothing."

"You know how it is between witches and wolves," Chuck added, quieter now. "If you’re serious about going, think it through. Long and hard."

I tucked the card into my bag. Then I looked at them both, warmth flooding up through me. "Chuck. Mindy. You have no idea what this means to me. Thank you. Truly."

Chuck waved me off, gruff. "We’re family. Anything I do for you doesn’t come close to what you and Sebastian have done for us."

"I just want you to have the happiness you deserve, Emilia." Mindy squeezed my hand. "You more than anyone."

I drove back to the pack house with the card burning a hole in my bag and my mind already made up.

A witch. If there was even a sliver of a chance, I was taking it. But first I had to run it past Sebastian.

He got home just after dark, shedding his jacket at the door and loosening his tie.

"How were Chuck and Mindy?" he asked, dropping onto the couch beside me.

"Chuck was over the moon about the gifts. Kept petting the whiskey box." I smiled. "And Mindy’s made a full recovery. Discharged a month ago."

"Good. That’s really good." His shoulders eased. "Maybe we should have them over for Christmas this year."

"They’d love that." I turned to face him. "There’s something else, though. Something I want to talk to you about."

Something in my tone must have shifted, because he went still, the easy warmth draining out of his face.

"I’m listening," he said.

I dug the card out and held it up between two fingers. "Mindy gave me this. It’s a contact for a witch."

His brow arched.

I pulled in a breath and pressed on. "Mindy thinks this witch might be able to help. To fix the thing that’s stopping me from having a child." I met his eyes. "But I’m the Luna of this pack, and I know exactly how strained things are between wolves and witches. So I wasn’t going to do anything without talking to you first."

He took the card and turned it over in his fingers, studying the address like it might rearrange itself into a threat.

"You want to try it," he said. It wasn’t a question. "Don’t you, love."

"Yes. Whatever it takes. I’ll try."

He was quiet for a beat. Then he pressed the card back into my palm and folded my fingers around it.

"Then I’m behind you, Emilia." His thumb brushed my knuckles. "And for what it’s worth, I’m glad you told me. That you didn’t just go off and handle it alone like you used to."

I leaned in and kissed him, quick and grateful. He caught the back of my neck and made it last.

When I pulled back, he asked, "When are you thinking of going? I’ll have Fynn clear my calendar. I’m coming with you."

"Tomorrow. The sooner, the better."

"Absolutely not." He straightened, all Alpha now. "You’re walking into a witch’s den. There is no version of this where I let you go alone."

I bit back a grin. "Actually, that’s exactly why you can’t come. I’m half witch myself, remember? I’ll blend in a lot better solo. Picture it, Sebastian. You show up looming in the doorway, six-foot-something of scowling Alpha reeking of dominance, and she takes one look and slams the door in our faces. Then we’ve blown our only shot."

He opened his mouth. Closed it again. "Hard to argue with that. How do you come up with these on the spot? Do you sit around all day working out ways to shut me down?"

"Of course not. I just happen to be thinking clearly for once."

"I’m still sending someone to watch your back."

"Fine. But they keep their distance. No hovering."

He caught my chin and kissed the corner of my mouth.

"Now that," he murmured, "is a wise woman."

The next day I dialed the number.

The line rang a while before it picked up. A young voice, crisp and bored. "Hexworks. How can I help you?"

Hexworks. They had a business name. I blinked.

"Hi, yes. This is Emilia Taylor. I’d like to book an appointment. As soon as possible."

Keys clicked on the other end. "Let me check the calendar." A pause. "Our earliest opening is three months out."

Three months. My stomach dropped. "That’s, no, that won’t work. I really can’t wait that long. It’s urgent, I need—"

"Ma’am." The voice cut in, thick with contempt. "Everybody’s in a hurry. Everybody’s got a crisis. You’re not special."

Then the line went dead.

I stared at my phone. The nerve of her.

"Well," Eve drawled inside my head. "She hung up on you. Nobody’s done that in a while."

"Oh, she is going to regret that," I said, already on my feet.

I sent a mind-link to the driver. "Pull a car around. I’m going out."

When I came down the steps and found him waiting beside a gleaming black BMW.

I stopped short.

"No," I said. "Not that one. Bring out Sebastian’s Rolls-Royce."

His eyebrows climbed, but he didn’t argue.

Then I glanced down at what I had on. A soft dress, nice enough, but nothing that announced anything.

I turned on my heel and called back to him. "Give me half an hour."
