Chapter 397: Chapter 231: The Father and Son’s First Late-Night Conversation, The Matchmaking Session

Ever since Wen Wan’s grandfather was wheeled into the hospital room, Mrs. Wen had been standing at the door, her eyes constantly darting over to Wen Wan.

When it was just the two of them left, Mrs. Wen tugged on Wen Wan’s sleeve and said in a hushed voice, "Wan’Er, come home with Mom for a bit."

Wen Wan looked up, her eyes still red. "Go home? But Grandpa is..."

"The doctors are here watching him. You can come back tomorrow." Mrs. Wen cut her off, her tone tinged with a certain urgency. "It wasn’t easy for you to make it back. There’s something we need to talk about at home."

Wen Wan hesitated for a moment, then turned to glance at Jiang Sifan, who was standing not far away.

Mrs. Wen tugged on her sleeve again, her voice even lower this time. "Just for a quick trip. I’ll bring you back first thing in the morning."

After a moment of thought, Wen Wan nodded.

She walked over to Jiang Sifan and said, "Class President, I’m going to head home with my mom for a bit. I’ll be back tomorrow."

"Is everything okay?" Jiang Sifan put down his water cup and walked over to her, asking softly.

Wen Wan shook her head. "It’s nothing. I’m just going home to check on things."

Jiang Sifan glanced at Mrs. Wen. She was standing in the hallway, a smile plastered on her face, but her eyes were sizing him up.

He felt a little uncomfortable but didn’t say anything. He just reminded Wen Wan, "Call me if you need anything."

Wen Wan nodded, then turned to look at Lu Fan.

Lu Fan had just gotten in touch with the vice president of the county hospital.

He was looking at a few forms in Chen He’s hand.

She walked over and said quietly, "Uncle Lu, thank you for everything. I’m going to go home with my mom for now. I’ll be back tomorrow."

Lu Fan glanced at Mrs. Wen, then back at Wen Wan, and nodded. "Go on. Call if you need anything."

And so, Wen Wan followed Mrs. Wen downstairs.

Once they were out the main entrance of the hospital, Mrs. Wen grabbed her hand and walked quickly, as if afraid someone might chase after them.

"Mom, slow down." Wen Wan stumbled as she was pulled along.

Without looking back, Mrs. Wen said, "Hurry up. It’s getting dark."

After Wen Wan left, Jiang Sifan stood at the door of the hospital room, staring blankly down the end of the hallway.

Lu Fan walked over and patted his shoulder. "Come on, let’s find a place to stay for the night."

Jiang Sifan snapped back to his senses and nodded.

The two of them left the hospital. Chen He had already driven the car to the entrance and was waiting.

Lu Fan asked Jiang Sifan, "What kind of hotel are you thinking of?"

"Anything’s fine. As long as I can sleep," Jiang Sifan replied.

Lu Fan smiled and said to Chen He, "To the Hilton in the city center."

Jiang Sifan heard the name of the hotel and seemed to recall hearing about it online. It sounded like a five-star hotel.

He had never stayed in a five-star hotel before, so for a moment, he felt a bit apprehensive.

After about a twenty-minute drive, the car stopped in front of a tall building.

A red carpet was laid out at the entrance to the lobby. A doorman in a gold uniform and white gloves saw the car stop and quickly stepped forward to open the door.

Jiang Sifan got out of the car and looked up.

The building was so tall he had to crane his neck to see the top. Its glass curtain wall reflected the afterglow of the sunset, shimmering with a golden light.

He followed Lu Fan inside. The lobby was immense, with a crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling, so bright it was dazzling.

He glanced down. He could even see his own reflection in the marble floor.

The receptionist was wearing a dark blue suit, her hair was impeccably styled, and she had a standard, professional smile on her face.

"Mr. Lu, your two executive suites are ready. Here are the key cards."

Lu Fan took the key cards, handed one to Jiang Sifan, and said, "Let’s go. We’ll head up and drop our things off first."

The elevator was fast, so fast that they arrived before Jiang Sifan could even register it.

The hallway was laid with thick carpeting, so quiet that the only sound was their two sets of footsteps.

Lu Fan’s room was at the end of the hall, and Jiang Sifan’s was next to it.

Lu Fan swiped his key card to open the door, then glanced back at him with a smile. "Once you’re settled, come over for a bit."

Jiang Sifan nodded and entered his room.

The room was much larger than he had imagined.

Just inside the door was a small living room, fully equipped with a sofa, a coffee table, and a television.

On the coffee table sat a potted orchid and a bottle of mineral water. Next to them was a handwritten card that read, "Welcome."

The bedroom was in the inner room. The bed was large, with the comforter folded neatly. A small lamp on the nightstand cast a warm, yellow light.

The bathroom had both a bathtub and a shower stall. Several bottles of toiletries, all with English labels, were arranged on the vanity.

Jiang Sifan stood before the window and pulled back the curtains. The entire city’s nightscape unfolded before his eyes.

He stood there for a moment before turning and leaving the room.

Lu Fan’s room had the same layout as his, but it was a bit larger.

On the coffee table were some assorted fruits and a pot of tea that was still steaming.

Lu Fan was sitting on the sofa scrolling through his phone. When he saw Jiang Sifan come in, he put his phone down and gestured with a smile. "Sit. Have some tea."

Jiang Sifan sat down across from him, took the cup Lu Fan offered, and had a sip.

The tea was hot and had a light, fresh aroma. He didn’t know what kind of tea it was, but it warmed his stomach as he drank it.

The two of them sat facing each other, a moment of silence stretching between them as neither knew what to say.

The room was very quiet, the TICK-TOCK of the clock on the wall echoing in the silence.

Jiang Sifan was the first to speak, his tone a little strained. "This hotel... must be pretty expensive, right?"

Lu Fan laughed. "It’s alright. This is your first time coming out with me; I can’t very well have you stay in a budget motel."

Jiang Sifan didn’t say anything, just lowered his head and sipped his tea.

Lu Fan didn’t press him, simply pouring himself a cup of tea and drinking it slowly.

After a moment, Lu Fan put down his teacup. He looked at Jiang Sifan, his tone turning serious. "About Wen Wan, what are your thoughts?"

Jiang Sifan looked up, a bit puzzled. "What do you mean, ’what are my thoughts’?"

Lu Fan watched him and said slowly, "Her mother called her back this time. Do you really think it was because of her grandfather’s illness?"
