Pan Lanfang shook her head and sighed. "You don’t know. That girl is as stubborn as a mule. I told her there was a really great guy for her, but she wouldn’t even listen and just hung up on me. Yesterday, I even had my son sound her out, and she just ended up chewing him out."
As Lu Fan listened, it was crystal clear to him.
He knew Jiang Yixia’s temper all too well.
"Auntie, please don’t worry," he said with a smile. "You can’t rush these things. You have to take them slow."
Pan Lanfang looked at him, a hint of apology in her eyes. "Xiaolu, you’re not angry, are you?"
"Why would I be angry?" Lu Fan said cheerfully. "Auntie, you’re doing this for my own good, I know that. Your daughter has her own way of thinking, and we have to respect that."
Hearing this, Pan Lanfang’s eyes grew red. She grabbed his hand and said emotionally, "Xiaolu, you’re such a good person. Don’t worry, Auntie will slowly work on her. One day, she’ll come around."
Lu Fan nodded. "Okay. I’ll leave it to you then, Auntie."
Jiang Guoqiang, who had been listening from the side, suddenly spoke up. "Xiaolu, you’ve come at the perfect time. Come with me to the fish pond."
Lu Fan asked curiously, "What are we going to the fish pond for?"
"It’s time to harvest the fish I’ve been raising," Jiang Guoqiang replied. "A buyer is coming today. Come lend me a hand. After we’re done catching the fish, we can have stewed fish for dinner tonight."
Hearing this, Lu Fan’s interest was piqued. "Sure! I’ve never caught fish before."
Pan Lanfang chimed in from the side, "Be careful. Don’t fall."
Soon, the two of them had changed into waders. Carrying nets and buckets, they made their way to the fish pond behind the village.
The pond wasn’t large, nor was the water very deep, but it was teeming with fish. Every so often, you could see ripples spreading across the surface.
Jiang Guoqiang got into the water and skillfully began to herd the fish.
Lu Fan followed behind, imitating Jiang Guoqiang’s movements and swishing his net through the water.
At first, he couldn’t get the hang of it, and his net came up empty several times.
Jiang Guoqiang laughed at him from the side. "Xiaolu, that’s not how you do it. You have to wait for the fish to swim toward you, then scoop them up in one motion."
Lu Fan chuckled. "Uncle, this takes real skill. I need more practice."
Jiang Guoqiang taught him a few tricks, and Lu Fan slowly got the hang of it, actually managing to catch a few fish.
The two of them were busy in the water for over an hour and caught several large buckets full of fish.
There were grass carp, silver carp, and a few big carp.
Lu Fan was panting from exhaustion, but his face was all smiles. "Uncle, these fish are really plump! It’s a great harvest this year."
Jiang Guoqiang was happy too. As he loaded the fish into the buckets, he replied, "Yeah. The rainfall was good this year, so the fish grew fast. When the buyer gets here in a bit, we should be able to get a good price for them."
The two men carried the fish buckets to the bank and waited for the buyer to arrive.
Before long, a tricycle truck drove up. A middle-aged man got out; he was the village’s dedicated fish dealer.
He looked at the fish, poked around at them, then shook his head. "Lao Jiang, the market for fish is bad today. I can only give you 70% of the usual price."
Jiang Guoqiang was stunned for a moment, then asked in shock, "Seventy percent? Why so low?"
The dealer shrugged, his tone helpless. "Nothing to be done. The fish market is in a slump these past few days, and everyone’s pushing prices down. If you don’t like it, you can wait, but the price might be even lower in a few days."
Jiang Guoqiang hesitated.
He’d been raising these fish for the better part of half a year, all just to sell them today.
At 70 percent, he would be taking a huge loss.
But if he didn’t sell, what if the price dropped even further in a few days?
As he was agonizing over the decision, Lu Fan spoke up. "Wait. We’re not selling these fish."
The dealer paused, taken aback, and looked at Lu Fan. "And you are?"
"I’m his relative," Lu Fan replied with a smile. "We’re not selling the fish. You can go now."
The dealer’s expression soured. He muttered a few words under his breath, got into his tricycle truck, and drove away.
Jiang Guoqiang grew anxious and pulled Lu Fan aside. "Xiaolu, what are you doing? If we don’t sell at seventy percent, the price might be even lower in a few days!"
Lu Fan patted his hand and explained with a smile, "Uncle, don’t worry. I know a few people who buy fish professionally. Their prices are much higher than that. I’ll have them come over and get them."
Jiang Guoqiang was skeptical. "Really?"
Lu Fan nodded and took out his phone to make a call.
"Hey, Lao Zhang. Yeah, it’s me. I’ve got some fish here. Can you send someone over to pick them up? Right, in Qingshan Village. Have them call me when they arrive. Okay. As for the price, you can decide, just make sure it’s a fair one so I don’t look bad."
After hanging up, he said to Jiang Guoqiang, "Uncle, just wait a little while. My friend is sending someone over right away."
Jiang Guoqiang was still a bit uneasy, but seeing Lu Fan’s confident expression, he didn’t feel he could say anything more.
After about half an hour, a truck drove up.
A well-dressed, middle-aged man got out of the truck. You could tell he was a boss just by looking at him.
When he saw Lu Fan, he hurried over and said enthusiastically, "President Lu, long time no see! When you said you had fish, I rushed over personally."
Lu Fan smiled, shook his hand, and gestured to the fish. "Lao Zhang, take a look at these fish. What are they worth?"
Lao Zhang examined the fish, nodding repeatedly. "Excellent fish, excellent fish! The quality, the size... they’re all top-grade."
He thought for a moment, then quoted a price. "President Lu, I’ll give you the highest market price—twenty per pound. How does that sound?"
When Jiang Guoqiang heard that, his eyes went wide.
The dealer from before had offered 70 percent, which worked out to only twelve or thirteen per pound.
Now this boss was offering twenty straight up—even higher than the normal price!
Lu Fan looked at Jiang Guoqiang and asked, "Uncle, is that okay with you?"
Jiang Guoqiang nodded vigorously. "Yes, yes, yes! That’s more than okay!"
Lao Zhang smiled and, with a wave of his hand, had a few workers start loading the fish onto the truck.
After the fish were loaded, he counted out the cash on the spot and handed it to Lu Fan.
Lu Fan immediately turned and gave it to Jiang Guoqiang.
Jiang Guoqiang’s hands were shaking as he held the thick stack of money.
