Chapter 169: Chapter 169: The Organization

Renee Morgan had no choice but to bite the bullet, send a voice message to let him know she was safe, and threw in a polite line, saying she’d treat him to dinner sometime.

The reply came swiftly: "No need, get some rest."

Renee let out a long sigh of relief, sent a goodnight sticker, and swiped him out of the chat window—out of sight, out of mind.

After stepping out of the bathroom, Renee Morgan sat cross-legged on the sofa and pulled out the box given to her by the base to study it.

There was nothing else in the box—just a globally accepted co-branded black card and a black slate.

The black card probably held the competition prize money.

Holding the black card, Renee Morgan took out her phone, opened WeChat, clicked to link the bank card, typed in her ID number, and successfully bound the card.

To see if the black card was really loaded with prize money and exactly how much, Renee Morgan topped up her WeChat balance several times, stopping only when she hit the limit; the balance showed 200,000.

Renee Morgan: "..."

She then linked the black card to an online shopping app, topped up her balance on the app’s wallet, and stopped when it showed 1,000,000.

Renee Morgan: "..."

If it weren’t midnight, she’d really want to go downstairs with the black card and check at the bank across the street to see exactly how much was on it.

After putting down the black card, Renee Morgan picked up the black slate again. Just now, when the slate was tucked in the box, she hadn’t noticed right away that the other side was lighting up.

Wasn’t this just a piece of stone?

With question marks all over her head, Renee slid her fingertip across it. The lit-up slate instantly transformed: first, the base’s logo appeared, then vanished, and her handwritten signature: Renee Morgan, appeared. In the lower right corner was a row of small text introducing her as a Senior Member of the Base, followed by two options: whether to activate.

Renee Morgan didn’t hesitate and tapped ’Activate.’

The screen changed almost instantly, showing several app-like programs, similar to phone apps.

The first thing Renee Morgan opened was the global black card banking app.

The app automatically displayed the black card number and her personal details—no need for another round of binding.

Renee Morgan’s finger tapped the balance section without hesitation.

The balance was Blank?

Renee Morgan thought the 1.2 million she’d topped up was the prize money, but then she saw a row of small explanatory text below: basically, the global black card has unlimited credit; swipe as you please, and the base will pick up the bill.

This... Is this the legendary unlimited black card?

She was holding an unlimited black card?

Renee Morgan wanted to bang the slate against something—was she really not dreaming?

After quitting the black card app, she returned to the main interface, which had a total of six apps. One of them was a shopping app—probably for convenient ordering.

Renee Morgan’s consumer urges weren’t high, so she didn’t rush in. Her gaze swept over the rest of the apps and landed on the Base Organization app.

Even though she was already a senior member of the base, Renee Morgan still knew nothing about the organization—otherwise, she wouldn’t even be clueless holding the black card.

She entered the Base Organization app. Like the black card app, no other numbers or ID were needed; her personal info was already registered. The account existed, but she needed to edit her nickname herself—it could be changed anytime.

Renee Morgan thought for a moment and typed in the nickname: Renee Morgan.

Once the nickname appeared, she went back to the chat page.

Unlike typical communication devices, the app’s message page was more like a live barrage, with all kinds of nicknames popping up and people exchanging intel via chat.

Renee Morgan entered the message page just as someone with the nickname ’Scorpion’ sent a message.

Scorpion: [Hey, our organization’s roster just expanded again. I heard it’s a female celebrity this time. It’s kind of a big deal, have you heard?]

Renee Morgan: "!"

A big deal is putting it mildly—it had rocked the whole globe. Except for a handful locked up in the lab, who wouldn’t know?

God K: [Of course, she’s definitely a stunner.]

Scorpion: [Hehe, I saw her too. Her sniping skills are legendary. In this high-scoring mission, will she grab the badge?]

Renee Morgan: "?" Grab the badge?

God K’s words seemed to trigger a keyword; on the top right of the message page, the word ’Task’ popped up. She tapped it out of habit.

She saw a task bar with five missions posted. Four showed ’badge grabbed,’ only one still hadn’t been claimed.

The chat box kept updating.

God K: [Then she’d be walking to her death.]

Scorpion: [? No way, right?]

God K: [Before the base posted the task, a whole bunch of people already died. No one managed to get it. Her flashy moves... Don’t mean much.]

Scorpion: [That bad? The mission points are crazy high this time. Too bad I’m a combat potato.]

God K: [Forget it. Most can’t grab this badge. Anyone who can would rival the top mercenary in the world.]

Renee Morgan skimmed through the new messages, then clicked into the unclaimed task bar.

... It was for an int|ernational pris|on—to catch a leader of a terr|orist org|anization.

Renee Morgan was mentally prepped, but upon seeing the file’s description of this dangerous individual, she was still a bit shocked.

She checked the points: whoever grabs the badge would earn 20 points.

She glanced at the other files that had been grabbed; they only awarded a few points each—which made 20 points insanely high.

After exiting the task bar, Renee Morgan clicked into the leaderboard at the top of the message window.

The leaderboard ranked by points. The highest score was 68, second place was 43, third 38; scores got much closer further down, with many stuck at just five points, struggling to climb any higher. The top three scores were obviously impressive.

Renee Morgan left the leaderboard, feeling a bit deflated; judging by the difficulty of the missions, she’d probably be a zero-point nobody.

Even God K’s sarcasm about ’flashy moves’ felt pretty restrained.

Renee Morgan glanced at the time—it was already past midnight; she could slowly research the remaining apps another day. After packing away the box, she turned off the lights and went to bed.

Warren told her to sleep well; Warren wouldn’t pick her up for the company until the next afternoon.

"You’re really hot right now. When it comes to resource management, I’ve held several meetings with the company brass..." Warren carefully analyzed all the resources the company was getting.

Since the show went viral, tons of blockbuster reality TV programs in the country had reached out to the company, hoping to sign her.

Aside from recurring guest spots on variety shows, there were supporting roles in big-budget dramas, and offers for lead roles in small indie web series.

As for movie scripts, the options dropped noticeably. Renowned directors put in a word with Warren—investors liked Renee Morgan’s buzz, but directors and producers wanted to meet her first; if she fit, she’d audition, then they’d talk further about collaboration.

With famous directors at the helm, top-tier crews, and lead roles probably already preassigned, the best she’d get was a cameo to build ties—using the role as a stepping stone, so she’d be able to land bigger parts on the big screen in the future.
