Chapter 104: Chapter 104: What Are You Capable Of

No wonder his chest felt soft and limp—it turns out he doesn’t even have the energy left to be angry!!!

"Don’t, even, try!" Dane spat out each word through gritted teeth, his voice strained, trying hard just to say them.

Renee Morgan stared at him with eyes sharp as knives and winter wind, took her blade off his neck, weighed it in her hand, a smile curling at her lips: "Why so tense? I used the back of the knife, just messing with you a bit."

Dane reached up to rub his neck. That momentary dull pain—it felt startlingly real...

If looks could kill, Renee Morgan would already be nothing but a pile of body parts.

Renee Morgan slipped her knife back into her waistband, took her boot off his chest, turned, and picked up the sniper rifle from the ground, settling back into position.

The comms had been quiet; most likely nothing had happened yet, otherwise Jay Monroe would’ve tipped her off immediately.

Dane sat up from the ground, took a while for his strength to return, then walked over to Renee, shot her a glare, and stared into the dark spread of night ahead.

When he spoke, his tone was calm and low: "Which direction?"

It’s not that he’s backing down; Renee’s sniper rifle had a high-powered scope, something no one else had.

Renee called out a direction without even lifting her head.

Dane looked at her round head, annoyed to the point of amusement—he was the one pushed over, stepped on, threatened, yet she’s got a bigger attitude than the supposed victim.

Under cover of night, the two of them lay on the hillside, ignoring each other.

Renee Morgan focused intently through the high-powered scope.

Dane fiddled with his submachine gun, occasionally scanning the pitch-black night, sneaking a glance at the woman beside him.

Renee ignored him, and he wasn’t bothered, cold light flickering deep in his dark eyes.

It was another ten minutes before Team 2’s other members arrived.

"Dane bro..." They crept closer, laying low, and when they saw Dane, they called out excitedly.

Renee Morgan heard the noise, instinctively turned her head.

They spotted Renee and their eyes lit up: "Hey, Little Mule."

Renee Morgan: "..." Why are these guys always running their mouths?

Dane spoke to them: "Be patient. Wait till they’re close to open fire. Don’t waste a single bullet." Their gear was limited.

The others all nodded in agreement.

Renee sneaked a glance at Dane, surprised—after just a day, he’d basically taken over as the leader of Team 2.

But they ended up waiting another half hour. Still no movement from the enemy.

Some of Team 2 were having trouble staying crouched.

Dane furrowed his brow, eyes briefly sweeping over Renee, who stayed perfectly still in position.

Whatever else—her endurance was definitely fit for this role.

Dane thought again of himself. Back when he entered the competition, he’d gone all in for the sniper role, but ended up cut and assigned as an assaultman.

He never figured out what he was lacking, especially after learning the base had given the sniper role to a woman—made him even more disgruntled.

Now he’d get a good look at just what this woman could do.

The night grew deeper, time stretching endlessly. Several Team 2 members had already moved to the grass, lying down to nap.

Dane stayed posted at Renee’s side, submachine gun in hand, eyes sharp as steel blades, his whole presence screaming fight-me.

Renee Morgan had been focused on her scope so long her vision blurred; she raised a fingertip, pressing her temple, and just then, Jay Monroe’s voice came through the comms.

"Looks like Team Red sent a scout heading your way. I’m too close, can’t make a move. You take him out," Jay’s calm voice cut through the night, clear as ever.

Jay was on single channel, so Dane couldn’t hear. Seeing Renee pressing her earpiece, he frowned and asked, "Something up?"

Renee waited until Jay finished his briefing, turned to Dane, her gaze cool and steady: "Team Red has a scout coming to check the route. Jay wants me to take him out."

No shooting allowed, or it would alert the ambushers at the forest entrance.

Sure enough, Dane’s eyes lit up: "Easy, leave it to me."

Watching him leave, Renee exhaled silently in relief. Dane wasn’t like Jay—his presence was overwhelming. Sitting with him too long, she almost couldn’t breathe.

Renee saw Dane descend the hillside fast, cross the mountain path, and set up an ambush by the forest road.

A shadow crept forward in the dark. Dane suddenly sprang up, silver flashing in the darkness, and the shadow hit the ground, quickly raising his hands in surrender.

That was a capitulation.

Dane wasn’t about to tap his helmet to score—the moment he called the number, the enemy at the forest entrance would be alerted.

"Stay still, or I’ll break your hand." Dane stripped all the scout’s gear, grabbed his communicator, dialed in to Renee, and told her he’d handled it.

Renee patched it through, updating Jay Monroe on the sitrep.

Jay heard Dane had taken the scout, thought nothing of it, figured it was just chance.

In this scenario, Team Red wouldn’t get a reply from the scout and might cautiously withdraw, but most likely would stay patient, or send a small squad ahead to scout.

If it was the latter, a heavy fight was inevitable.

As for Team Blue, they weren’t averse to battle—they all wanted headshots for points anyway.

Twenty minutes later, Jay Monroe patched back into Renee’s comms: "They’re here, small squad of six. Hold your fire for now, leave it to me."

Renee relayed the message to Dane.

Dane heard Jay Monroe wanted solo points, and didn’t look too happy, but with such a small squad, it wasn’t worth multiple shooters opening up—they’d reveal their true strength.

But before Jay could even shoot, from behind the six-man squad, a massive force appeared—a group nearly a hundred strong.

Jay Monroe, itching for action, suddenly exhilarated, reported in, pumped: "Renee, near a hundred-man squad inbound. Notify Team 2 to prep for battle."

Renee switched on comms for everyone in Team 2, told them to get ready.

Dane, hearing the big force coming, dragged the scout back up the hillside at a sprint.

The others, who’d been resting in the grass, were awake now, checking gear and splitting up to find ambush spots.

The moment Jay Monroe opened fire, Dane finished off the scout with a headshot too.

Renee watched the forward squad get wiped out by Jay Monroe’s sniping, one headshot after another.

Dane, itching to charge in, got glared back by Renee: "With that many enemies, you go in, you’re signing your death warrant."

Jay could rack up headshots only because he had the sniper advantage, hidden, picking them off while their side couldn’t locate him.

Sure enough, the tide quickly turned. Team Red’s sniper had pinpointed Jay Monroe’s position and was now hunting him down at full throttle.
