CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 295: THE LODGES OF THE FANG AND CLAW
Beyond the main gates of Æthrynn, where the outer trade routes crossed into the wider territory, stone-weavers and rune-carvers laboured beneath the shadow of a newly erected step-pyramid. Unlike the single-focus pyramids within the inner city, this structure featured twin staircases ascending to dual sanctums at its peak, etched with the glyphs of two primal deities: the Sabre-Tiger and the Shadow Wolf.
Simultaneously, Caius authorized the foundation of secret Warrior Lodges in the realm’s three largest provincial cities. Modeled after ancient warrior societies, these lodges operated behind stone-carved masks, ritualized initiations, and sacred martial ranks.
Old Bones stood beside Caius atop the construction overlook, watching the long lines of ambitious provincial martial artists, hunters, and mercenary veterans who had gathered at the pyramid’s base.
"My Sovereign," Old Bones said softly, his silver-grey eyes scanning the eager crowds. "If your goal is to build a realm-wide militia to back the standing cohorts, why not simply issue a royal decree for a compulsory levy? A forced draft would yield fifty thousand spears by fortnight’s end."
Caius turned his golden-and-obsidian gaze toward his steward, a faint smirk touching his lips. "A forced conscript fights only until his line breaks, Old Bones. But a brother of a sacred lodge fights until his last breath. Mortals are naturally drawn to the mysterious and the hidden. Command a peasant to take up a spear, and he feels like fodder. Offer him an invitation to a secret order, trial by divine beast, and esoteric martial power, and he will beg to bleed for you."
The dual pyramid served as the core testing ground for these prospective lodge leaders, offering a choice between two divine paths:
The Path of the Sabre-Tiger: Focused on raw kinetic empowerment, thunderous vanguard breaches, and explosive shock-strikes designed to shatter armored infantry lines.
Stolen novel; please report.
The Path of the Shadow Wolf: Focused on kinetic shadow perception, ambush stalking, peripheral harassment, and fluid flank maneuvers.
As recruits advanced through the lodge stages, mastering each level unlocked higher tiers of specialized beast combat arts. Those who successfully endured the trials and earned passage into the brotherhood received sacred war-gear forged directly in the citadel's runic foundries:
The Macuahuitl: The iconic close-combat weapon of the lodges, a heavy wooden club-sword set with rows of razor-sharp obsidian blades along its edges, capable of delivering brutal kinetic tearing strikes.
The Tiger or Wolf Helm: A terrifying beast helm forged from blackened volcanic glass and reinforced silk. Its narrow, slit-like eyeholes gleamed with dark, predatory intent.
The Chimalli Buckler: A round, lightweight shield constructed from layered hardwood and woven leather, bound in a dense thread-lattice weave for maximum shock absorption.
Down in the plaza below, the newly inducted lodge brothers stepped into the daylight fully equipped. They strutted through the crowds with their chests puffed out, casually flexing their obsidian weapons and executing kinetic strike routines in front of the uninitiated onlookers.
Caius leaned against the stone balustrade and let out a genuine chuckle. "Look at them... proud of their new gifts, flexing for everyone who hasn't earned a mask." He shook his head softly. "Simple, but effective."
The dark prestige of the beast-masks proved irresistible. Among the crowds, children and young teenagers stared with wide, awe-struck eyes. Capitalizing on this fervor, Caius authorized the immediate creation of Junior Lodges, training grounds where youths could begin basic martial conditioning and lodge lore long before taking the adult trials.
Old Bones reviewed the tactical ledger glowing in his hands. "In this initial stage alone, we can call upon ten thousand sworn lodge warriors scattered across the provincial towns and trade roads." The dark elf steward looked out over the sea of eager young faces clamoring at the pyramid gates. "If ten thousand stand ready in the first stage... what will our numbers look like in the years to come?"
Caius’s eyes glinted with cold satisfaction. "In a few years, Old Bones, an invading army won't just be fighting my cohorts. Every forest, alley, and village in this realm will be a nest of wild beasts waiting to tear them apart."
