CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 240: THE MARCHING BROOM

As four thousand core-bearing deities surged down the mountain like a golden avalanche, Caius stood motionless at the center of the courtyard. He tapped his forehead once more, sending a pulse through the four mithril studs embedded in his flesh. Reality gave way as his Crown Core pocket domains opened fully, expanding the spatial tear into a towering portal of absolute dark.

Old Bones materialized from the shadow cast by Caius’s boots, his gaunt, ethereal frame standing steadfast at his master’s right side. Behind them, the full strength of the Expeditionary Field Army stepped onto the stone.

At the rear command anchor stood Caius and Old Bones, flanked by seven Vel’xul Stalkers slipping silently through the shadows and the massive, looming form of the Shadow Wolf guarding their flank.

Directly in front of them, the living mainline assembled into The Marching Broom. At the absolute center stood the compact, six-foot Orc General, surrounded by ten massive eight-foot Titan Honor Guards holding heavy tower shields. Anchored alongside them was Archmage Orven, leading fifty Obsidian Arcana Mages within the Protected Core Matrix. Flanking the center anchor, 989 Heavy Orcs locked rectangular black-iron shields into twin phalanx wings. On the left flank, 106 Volcanic Barbarians gripped their battleaxes, their basalt meridians glowing with kinetic heat; on the right, 106 Gale-Tide Dark Elves blurred into shadow-mist, shortbows and dark-steel daggers drawn.

Deep within the spatial beads, the Arachne Hive stood ready to plug any breach.

Caius looked up at the roaring divine horde closing the distance. With a flick of his wrist, he delivered a cold, singular directive:

"Advance."

Before the mainline moved, Caius unleashed Stage I: The Shock & Awe Vanguard.

Six massive spatial distortions tore open directly in the path of the charging deities, releasing six mechanical constructs powered by chest-sealed Essence Beads. Krag’gath and Borgath struck the enemy front like iron meteors, throwing shattered bodies and divine armor into the air. Thrum ignited a wave of localized geothermal heat, while Mal’kor unleashed a suffocating cloud of debilitating miasma. Gor’muka and Lorien tore through the divine vanguard with relentless, cold efficiency, breaking their ranks and smashing their momentum.

The sight of six towering, emotionless constructs pulverizing their vanguard sent a shockwave of terror through the divine army. Arrogance turned to panic as their disciplined charge broke into chaotic confusion.

From the central anchor, the Compact Orc General raised his broadsword, his command echoing across the courtyard. "Phalanx! Forward!"

The 989 Heavy Orcs stepped forward as one, their iron-shod boots shaking the earth as The Marching Broom moved in to sweep the mountain clear.

Seeing their front lines crushed under the sheer kinetic violence of the six Vanguard Constructs, the senior divine commanders tried desperately to rally their forces.

"Hold your ground! Focus elemental barrages on the constructs! Reform the phalanx!" a high-ranking herald with glowing silver wings roared, raising a crackling thunder-spear to direct the remaining core-bearers.

Thousands of divine warriors began to coalesce around their commanders, attempting to build a defensive wall of fire and holy light to stem the tide.

Caius observed the reorganization through his Eye of the Loom with cold detachment. Command nodes identified.

With a subtle flick of his fingers, he issued a silent command to the shadows behind him.

The 7 Vel’xul Stalkers melted out of reality. Utilizing their spatial-stepping ability, they slipped through the folds of the void, bypassing the front lines entirely and re-emerging directly inside the divine command clusters.

Shadows flickered, and obsidian claws flashed in silent, synchronized arcs. Blade dreadlocks whipped through the air like razor-sharp whips. Before the divine generals could even raise their shields, their heads were neatly severed from their shoulders, spurting golden-red blood into the dirt. Seven supreme commanders fell simultaneously, their severed heads bouncing across the cobblestones before their bodies hit the ground.

With their leadership decapitated in seconds, the remaining divine forces completely shattered.

The Gale-Tide Dark Elves fluidly swept through the gaps left by the chaos, while the Volcanic Barbarians crashed into their exposed flanks with explosive kinetic strikes. Pinned between the unstoppable Heavy Orc Phalanx and the rampaging constructs, the divine army gave up all pretense of fighting.

Thousands bled out upon the field or fled blindly into the surrounding hills. When the dust finally settled, 500 surviving deities threw down their glowing weapons, falling to their knees in the blood-slicked courtyard, trembling as they pressed their foreheads to the stone in utter surrender.

Caius stepped through the neatly parting ranks of his army, his dark cloak rustling against the quiet wind. Old Bones glided at his shoulder like a pale specter.

Stopping before the 500 kneeling core-bearers, Caius’s cold, violet eyes swept over their bowed heads. He casually raised a finger, pointing at two young, terrified core-bearers on the edge of the crowd.

"You two," Caius commanded softly. "Stand."

The two messengers scrambled up, their limbs shaking so violently they could barely keep their footing, tears of terror streaking through the blood on their faces.

"Run to your holy mountains, Olympha and Caelus," Caius said, his voice flat, emotionless, and carrying the absolute weight of a sovereign decree. "Deliver a message to your supreme leaders. Tell them they have exactly one day to descend, kneel, and surrender their realms to me. If they fail to do so before the sun sets tomorrow, I will take their heads myself and line every pike along the grand gates of this city with them."

The two messengers didn't wait for a second instruction. Pale as ghosts, they spun on their heels and ran for their lives, sprinting up the rocky mountain path toward the clouds, driven by pure, primal terror as Caius watched their retreating forms in silence.
